Yoshi's
Island

Intro / Yoshi's House / Yoshi's Island 1 / Yellow Switch Palace / Yoshi's Island 2 / Yoshi's Island 3 / Yoshi's Island 4 / #1 Iggy's Castle
Intro
Level Type: Introduction
This isn't really a level. It gives you a quick outline of the story so far. You can move for about 2 seconds before the message appears.
Yoshi's House
Level Type: Mini-Bonus
Hit the information block for a message that goes a bit like this:
|
Hello! Sorry
I'm not home, but I have gone to rescue my friends who were captured by
Bowser. |
If you come back here when you have Yoshi then the message will change to:
|
It is possible to fill in the dotted line blocks. To fill in the Yellow ones, just go west then north to the top of the mountain. |
And you can eat the berries in the trees with Yoshi too.
Yoshi's Island 1
Level Type: Rocky Field.
Bonus Room: After the first leaping piranha
plant there is a
pipe with two blocks covering the top. Use the A button to spin jump on
them and destroy
them (note: this does not work if you are little Mario.)
Midway Tape: The pipe that you exit from
fires you over a Rex
and a leaping Piranha Plant. The tape is shortly after.
Extra Life: When you reach a lone red shell
with a block and some clouds above it, pick
up the shell, press B and up and then release Y to throw it up at the
block. Now quickly
run right, bounce off the Banzai Bill and onto the clouds to claim the
1-Up Mushroom
before it falls off the edge and down a hole.
End Tape: To get a high score on the level goal, bounce
off Chargin' Chuck's
head or leap from the Rex platform. It will take you to Yellow Switch
Palace.
| Dragon
Coin 1:
Atop the rocky outcrop you start next to (the one with the Shell-less
Koopa on). Dragon Coin 2: Walk along until you reach a row of three rocky outcrops, similiar to the one at the beginning of the level. There is a Dragon Coin on the last one. Dragon Coin 3: Once you have gone down to the Bonus Room, use even more A button spin jumps to smash the yellow blocks hiding the Dragon Coin. Dragon Coin 4: A more interesting pile of rocks with Rex's all over it holds a Dragon Coin at the peak. Climb up to nab it. Dragon Coin 5: Just before you finish the level you will come across a leaping Piranha Plant and a Rex. The Dragon Coin is right above Rex. |
Yellow Switch Palace
Level Type Switch Palace
Coins Galore: There are no enemies here and no obstacles. It's a chance to bag yourself a few extra lives. Jump on the P-Switch and run around the room in an anti-clockwise motion, jumping all the time. As long as you are collecting enough coins you should be able to bag yourself a nifty 3 extra lives. Go through the pipe and jump on the yellow switch to finish the level and turn all of the yellow dotted blocks into yellow ! blocks.

Yoshi's Island 2
Level Type: Forest.
Extra Life: At the beginning of the level is
a lone red shell
next to a platform literally swarming with red shelled Koopas. Pick up
the shell and throw
it at the first Koopa. It should knock down every Koopa and bag you at
least 1 extra life
(more if you plan carefully what you are throwing it at.)
Yoshi: There are two lone ? blocks
(after the ? blocks with
the dotted/! block in the middle.) the second one is a Yoshi. Make
Yoshi eat as many
berries as he can and he will poop up an extra life egg.
Midway Tape:
Just past
Chargin' Chuck's hill.
Pink Berry: You won't need to know about
this until later. It
serves no purpose on this level.
Bonus Room: The first blue pipe you see will warp you to a
cave full of flying
blocks. You can throw the magic blue blocks to break the flying ones,
or an easier way is
to come in with Yoshi. Now you can leap into the air and then leap off
Yoshi's back to go
even higher. There is a 1-Up Mushroom in here.
End Tape: To get a high score, hit the
yellow blocks in a
square to make a P-Switch fall down. Jump on it and the coins will
change into rocks. Run
along them and jump at the end to break the tape when it's high. It
will take you to Yoshi's Island 3.
| Dragon
Coin 1:
Just after you find Yoshi will be an info box. The dragon coin is in
the air shortly after that. Dragon Coin 2: Floating not too far from the last one. Dragon Coin 3: Climb the staircase and jump over the angry Chargin' Chuck. The Dragon Coin is just over the edge of his hill. Dragon Coin 4: Run along until you reach the first hill with Monty Moles leaping out of it. Smash the second yellow block to make a vine grow. You will have to abandon Yoshi if you have him (don't worry, he doesn't go anywhere) and climb up to find the dragon coin in the clouds. Dragon Coin 5: Hovering over the second Monty Molehill. |
Yoshi's Island 3
Level Type: Mountains.
Yellow ! Blocks:
Go visit
the Switch Palace before you come here.
Most of the bottomless pits will be covered by the helpful Yellow !
Blocks.
Bonus Room: Once you have ridden across the
moving gray
platforms, jump on the rotating block and ride it to the bottom. There
is a yellow pipe
which leads to a cave.
Midway Tape: When you have left the pipe you
will find yourself
back on dry land. The Midway tape is not far from here.
Star Block: If
you have collected 30 coins (at least) on this level before you hit
this block then
instead of giving you a measly coin it will cough up a generous 1-UP
mushroom.
End Tape:
This takes you to Yoshi's Island 4.
| Dragon
Coin 1:
Floating over the first two shrink/grow yellow platforms. Dragon Coin 2: Once in the bonus room, jump on the switch to turn the coins into blocks. You can now cross the lava river and grab the Dragon Coin at the end. Dragon Coin 3: Just next to the Midway tape. Dragon Coin 4: Once you are back over the valleys again you will see lots more shrink/grow yellow platforms. Jump from one to the next without falling off and there is a Dragon Coin at the end of it. Dragon Coin 5: After the Star Block you will ride on two more rotating platforms and then land on a ledge with an arrow sign on it. The Dragon Coin is right there. |
Yoshi's Island 4
Level Type:
Rapids.
Bonus Room: The first blue pipe after the
fourth bobbing island
will warp you to an area full of pokey plants. There are no other
surprises in here so it
isn't really worth it.
Cross the
river: Pick
up the red shell and throw it up at the yellow
block with the P-Switch on it. The switch will fall and now you can use
it to turn the
coins into blocks and cross the river.
End Tape: Read the info box to find out
about snapping the
tape, or instead, jump off the box and hit the tape high. It takes you
to Iggy's Castle.
| Dragon
Coin 1:
Hovering over the first bobbing island. Dragon Coin 2: Hovering over the second bobbing island, a bit higher this time. Dragon Coin 3: If you went down the pipe then you have to go back to get this coin. If not then it is floating over yet another bobbing island. Dragon Coin 4: Floating over the big gap in the river. Turn the coins into blocks first! Dragon Coin 5: After you have crossed the easy river with lots of bobbing islands you will come to a stable island. The Dragon Coin is there. |
#1 Iggy's Castle
Level Type: Koopa Castle
| Extra
Lives: Simple
enough. Jump up and climb on the fence. Now hit as many Climbing Koopas
on the head as you can (using the switch side gates) and DO NOT touch
the floor. You can get a maximum of 9 extra lives this way. Midway Tape: As soon as the fences end, you will find the tape and a message. Beat up Iggy Koopa: You must battle Iggy Koopa on an island tilting in molten lava. He attacks in one way only. He will climb into his shell and roll a ball at you. To beat this not-very-scary attack, just wait until the island tilts to the right and then jump on his head two or three times. If he gets knocked back on then just keep trying to knock him off again. If you do it right then Iggy Koopa will roll into the lava. |
![]() |
Mario has defeated the demented Iggy Koopa in castle #1 and rescued Yoshi's friend who is still trapped in an egg. Together they now travel to Donut Land.
