Sprout Veggie
Small vegetables that are best used
(and
only good for) defeating enemies. These appear in Sub-Space after
you've
done some Coin weeding twice.
Large Veggie
Larger vegetables are used in the
same
way as the small ones. However, collect 5 of them, and a Stopwatch will
appear. These weigh more than small veggies, only Toad can heft them
with
no effort.
Mushroom Block
These mysterious mushrooms are heavy
enough
to be used as weapons, and durable enough to make stairs. You must
press
forward and hit the "B" button to toss them, otherwise, you'll just
drop
them.
Mushroom
In the Mushroom Kingdom, these were
always
found in "?" blocks, and would slide around when you pop them out.
However,
this isn't the Mushroom Kingdom, it's Sub-Con. To find a Mushroom,
enter
Sub-Space at a certain spot. To use one, lift it up, and you'll get a
1-point
increase in your life meter. There are no more than two per level, and
the extra HP diminish when you clear the area.
Heart
After you beat about 8 foes, this
will
float up in some random space on the screen. Catch it to recover 1
point
of energy
Cherry
Relatively useless alone, collect 5
to
make Starman appear. In the slot game, 1 in the first slot gives you
one
life, 2 gives you 2 lives, and 3 gives you 5 lives. On the All-Stars
version,
3 Cherries only gives you 3 lives, but a Cherry and 2 "7"s gives you
another
3 chances. Collect a Cherry in Sub-Space, and it will still be there on
the regular level. A 1990 rumor had it that 32 of these gave you a Fire
Flower, but that has since been extinguished.
Bomb
DYNAMITE!!! These explosives are
often
pulled up from the grass. Find some enemies or a fragile rock wall
quickly,
as they begin to flash and then explode after a short time. They can
damage
you as well as foes and walls!
Bob-Omb
An enemy when encountered, but an
item
if pulled from the grass. If that happens, toss it quick! They don't
like
being buried, and will blow up faster than regular Bombs or walking
Bob-Ombs.
Jar
Sort of an item. Duck into one to
find
something remotely useful, like a Key, Potion, or 1-Up. Later in the
game,
they all seem to have the same thing inside (Shells and Shyguys),
except
a few of them... If you find you can't go down a jar, look for a
Potion nearby, and enter Sub-Space and try. You might find yourself in
a totally WARPED situation!
Key
Attack enemies... Open locked
doors...
Get chased by Phanto... That's about it for the Key points of
this
essential but dangerous item.
Shell
Pull it from the ground and toss it.
It
will wipe out anything that comes in contact with it until it hits a
wall
or ledge. You can ride it and even pick it back up while it
slides.
POW Block
Back from MB, now you can toss it,
and
it will shake the screen - and anything unfortunate enough to be on the
ground at the time! These are often out in the open. hold one in
Sub-Space
until Sub-Space ends, and you will bring it back to the regular level
and
have 2 POWs!
Potion
Toss it down in a certain space, and
enter
the door. Welcome to Sub-Space the dark,
one-screen, mirror image. Home
of
Mushrooms and generator of double POWs and Cherries! No enemies here,
and
no veggies! Beware of any Spikes onscreen when you entered, they
will still be here. Do pull the grass and harvest some Coins! Only 2
Coin
harvests per level! Hope you find some Mushrooms, and please enjoy your
stay! If you wish to, enter near a jar that you can't enter in the
regular
level. Chances are, you have stumbled across a Warp Zone!
Coin
Pull the grass in Sub-Space, and
you'll
find Coins! That is, unless you've harvested Coins twice in the same
level.
These will allow you to take a chance at the Bonus Game after you exit
the level, but you MUST play all of them! Hope you're playing as Toad,
as Coins aren't light!
Vine/Ladder/Chain
Up, up, and up some more! Climb the
vines,
ladders, or chains in various areas (e.g. World 5-2 or 6-3) to reach
higher
ground
Magic Carpet
Pidgit overboard! Now it's you on
board.
Fly along in the direction you've been travelling so far until you
reach
something solid to latch onto (Cloud, Vine, the ground). No
sightseeing,
as Carpets have a backup device... They vanish at bout the time
you
should have gotten to something solid. The ground never looked so
good!
Stopwatch
Appears if you pull out 5 Large
Veggies.
For about 8 seconds, all enemy motion will cease, making your foes easy
targets. Does NOT appear in Sub-Space.
Invincible Starman
Pick 5 Cherries to make this old
friend
appear. Now you can run around invincible, and mow down anything in
your
way. Lasts about 8 or 10 seconds, but can be used to kill Birdo if you
catch one close to him. It can appear in Sub-Space, but if it does,
you'd
better get it, or it'll be gone whan Sub-Space wears out. Unlike
Starmen
from the Musroom Kingdom, this one rises while moving left and
right.
1-Up
Wherever these appear, they only
show
up once per level! Gives you an extra life if you pick it;
usually,
it will be in the grass. A couple secret mirror jars in the cave on
World
6-1 have them, and at either end of the jars. But if you get one, it
nixes
the others (D'oh!)
Note:
Enemies and Items, with the
exception
of Keys, cannot be carried through a door or out of Jars,
Sub-Space does NOT generate
double Mushroom
Blocks. That's cheating (But double POWs and Cherries isn't?). If
you're
holding a Mushroom Block in Sub-Space, It will dissolve in your hands
whan
Sub-Space expires... But the original one will still be there.
As if it hasn't been stated
enough, You
can't collect Coins more than twice per level. That means you can
go in and collect as many Coins as you can (Try it where the 2 Shyguys
are on 1-2, or in the cave on 3-1 - Hope you brought Toad), and exit a
maximum of 2 times. Small Veggies will replace Coins if you try again
(These
will not dissolve when Sub-Space ends). However, you CAN enter
once
and collect coins, enter again for a Mushroom, or just to do nothing,
then
enter and collect coins again. You may also reset the grass in
the
area, and collect from the same spot twice. As a bonus, it's a max of 2
times PER LEVEL!! So you can collect twice in one level, and
then warp ahead through a warp jar,
and
collect twice in the level you just warped to!!! Try this on 3-1 for a
TRUCKLOAD of Coins!
If there is more than one
Mushroom in Sub-Space,
there is only ONE MORE, and they are never in the same spot. You
usually
find them near the Potion vial, but sometimes, you must search...
You can't enter Sub-Space while
in a Jar.
Who knows what THAT would do?! Mario might WAKE UP!!!
For any beginners out there, you
can't
swim in this game AT ALL!!! As in SMB, do NOT jump in the water.
Just because Trouter is in there doesn't mean you should be. That
should
be all the more reason for you to stay out! If you've played SMB
before,
you know what I mean. If you've played SMB3 or SMW before, don't be
fooled.
Swimming is NOT an opition!!!!
HP, Mushrooms, Veggies, and
Cherries are
NOT cumulative, and therefore, they will NOT carry over into the next
stage
or world. If you exit World 3-3 with 4 (Maximum) HP, 4 Cherries, and 4
Large Veggies, you'll start World 4-1 with 2 HP, 0 Large Veggies, and
no
Cherries. Same applies if you warped from the previous world or two
(e.g.
from 1-3 to 4-1). That's cheating (But it's not with Coins?)
