In a Nutshell
Mario's first foray into the 3D world has his jumping into pictures to unlock the princess from her prison by using the power of 120 power stars.
The game starts with Mario standing outside the princess' castle. He gets a letter from Peach asking him to a party at the castle (obviously a cake has been baked). When he gets in, he hears (or rather reads in a dialogue box) that no one is home and he should "scram" over a maniacal laugh. Mario talks to toad, though, and finds that the princess has been locked in a picture by bowser. To unlock the picture, Mario needs to retrieve the power stars for the castle, so Mario jumps into the only unlocked picture (Bowser forgot about it, luckily) and starts his quest for the power stars & the princess.

"Mario, please come to the castle. I've baked a cake. Yours truly, Princess Toadstool.
After defeating Bowser AGAIN you are transported to the front of the castle. There Peach is released from her trap and is very thankful. She gives you a kiss on the nose and the cake. OK, OK, it isn't much at all but that looks like a big cake (Those dolls on top are life size!)
