You've read the reviews of Super Mario Galaxy and from what you gather its a pretty awesome game, even Nintendo felt the need to address the game. Is it really all that great, though?

According to CNET blogger Don Reisinger the game isn't what the reviews say it is. Here is a snippet of what Ron had to say in his blog:

The first thing that struck me about this game was the utter lack of beauty. And while I realize the Wii doesn't have the horsepower we've all come to know and love in the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or the PC, this game looks no better than games released back in 2001.

Is graphics everything? Of course not. But don't you think Nintendo could have done a slightly better job creating a better looking world? I hate to be picky, but compare this game to Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube -- Nintendo's last generation device -- and there is no contest. And after playing games like Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed, I can't help but think this game is downright ugly for this generation.

Honestly when it all comes down to it this is just personal taste or a "I agree" or "I disagree" type of thing. What's going to have to happen is people buy or rent the game and experience it for themselves then come to a conclusion.

Forgot to mention Wrecking Crew is now available to download on the Virtual Console for 500 points. You can view Wrecking Crew game information in our Retro 80's section.
Wrecking Crew (NES, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): In the days before Mario and Luigi became sports stars in their downtime between plumbing and saving the Princess, they tried their hands as one-man wrecking crews. With a hammer as their only tool, players take control of the brothers and set out to destroy ladders, rip out pipes, knock down walls and detonate explosive devices. But make sure to plan your path of destruction carefully, as each building is designed as its own clever puzzle—if you're not careful, you can easily trap yourself in a dead end. Adding to the excitement and challenge are fireballs, enemies and an angry foreman roaming the buildings. They're all trying to stop you from moving on to the next stage. With 100 buildings to demolish and the ability to construct your own, it's a wonder Mario and Luigi ever got back to saving the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario is apparently more recognized in Canada than the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper!

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Front-page headlines as the country's most powerful politician apparently doesn't make you more recognizable than an animated Italian plumber.

According to a Harris/Decima survey commissioned by Nintendo of Canada, more people in Calgary, Toronto and Halifax can identify a photo of Nintendo's iconic video game character, Mario, than can identify a photo of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Even in Calgary, which includes Harper's home riding of Calgary Southwest, Mario was more recognizable (47 per cent vs. 41 per cent). More women across Canada were also able to identify Mario than the country's top politician (66 per cent vs. 63 per cent) and nationwide, the animated plumber is just as well-known as the prime minister. Both were recognized by 70 per cent of respondents in five major centres when asked to identify photographs by name.

Mario, who launches his newest title Super Mario GalaxyTM for Nintendo's WiiTM, also outshone opposition leader Stephane Dion. Less than half of Canadians surveyed - 48 per cent - were able to identify Dion's photo, which included a Canadian flag in the background. In fact, in Montreal, which includes Dion's home riding of Saint-Laurent-Cartierville, more people recognized Mario than the Liberal party leader (78 per cent vs. 71 per cent).

"Canadian politicians are lucky Mario doesn't have his Canadian citizenship and could campaign for office," said Ron Bertram, general manager of Nintendo of Canada. "It's no surprise that Mario is more recognized than high-profile politicians: he's entertained generations of Canadians and inspires only happy thoughts."

"Super Mario Galaxy for Wii will further boost Mario's stature in Canada" said Bertram. "Moms and dads will have some great Mario fun alongside their kids."

Nintendo's Mario character is the bestselling video game franchise of all time, selling more than 200-million units worldwide. Mario has appeared in more than 200 games since his debut in the original Donkey Kong® in 1981. He first headlined a title in 1983 in Mario Bros.® and soon after in the revolutionary Super Mario Bros.® in 1985 on the Nintendo Entertainment System® (NES).

Super Mario Galaxy, available across Canada with gameplay in English and French, is the latest innovative title in the popular franchise, using unique motion-based controls in a gravity-defying adventure. Super Mario Galaxy brings Mario to the Wii generation - young or old, gamer or not. And with the game's innovative "co-star mode," even the most inexperienced players can join in the action.

Nintendo launched the "Check Mii Out Channel" yesterday which can be downloaded free on the Wii Shopping Channel. To read more about this service please read the November 8 Nintendo of America Press Release.

Once you get all you need to know, here's where the fun begins. The first contest of this service is "Mario Without A Cap" in which the whole goal is to make a Mii in the form of Mario without his cap. Then submit it before the contest is over. Unfortunately I don't know much more beyond this point.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has rated a few new titles for the Virtual Console. One in particular was Yoshi's Cookie (E), which was originally released for the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. We may see this title hit the VC within the next few weeks but that's just speculation from me. Keep it tuned here for the latest!

Can't wait for the soon to be released Super Mario Galaxy, can you? Well Advanced Media Network posted the first thirty minutes of game play yesterday in which I would like to remind you, if you so choose to watch, there are MANY spoilers contained of course.

The reason we stretch "soon to be released" is because Galaxy is only like two days away from being released yet web sites are posting its content. It would have been fair for the fans to wait, you know? Ah well its your choice to watch or not -- the power is in your hands from now until Nov. 12!

Since its release on November 1st Super Mario Galaxy has seen 251,000 copies sold which earned the game on the first place spot for the nation's sales charts. To some of you 251,000 isn't too horrible, and it isn't, but Galaxy still hasn't outsold past Mario games:

For example, when New Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan on May 15, 2006 for the Nintendo DS, around 420,000 copies were sold... almost doubling Galaxy's numbers. To us it would appear that the numbers would be a bit higher for Galaxy seeing how there's such a high demand for it and has been since the game was announced for the Wii console.

Something interesting to watch would be how well SMG does in the states when its released on November 12. One thing is for certain - fans better hurry to their local stores to get a copy fast on that day or else you'll be waiting!

Over the past couple of weeks we've been hearing Super Mario Galaxy would be released on November 14 but originally we would expect in on the 12th. If you're one of those people who think they'll see Galaxy be released on November 14 than we're here to tell you that won't happen. Galaxy has been confirmed (again) for November 12 by Nintendo so expect copies in stores the 13th or so.
