Case #2 was called "Where'd the Koopalings Come From."  That should now be changed to "Where'd the Koopalings Go".  It seems that the 7 kids of Bowser, have now been replaced with a single namesake child.  Was Bowser Jr. around the whole time or is Nintendo just rewriting history? Clue 1 - The Games So far, Bowser Jr has appeared in the Mario Party games as well as, **SPOILER**, being the true identity of Shadow Mario in Super Mario Sunshine.  Bowser Jr will also be appearing in Mario Kart: Double Dash. Clue 2 - The Likeness Bowser Jr, is the only kid of Bowser to look the most like Bowser's own young self (as seen in Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story).  So, it is a no brainer that Bowser Jr is really Bowser's son. Bowser had no clue what was going on. Then on the final night.... "No! Nephew don't! Why?" Screamed Morton JR as Bowser JR approached. "Because I shall take you out before you get me!" Screamed Bowser JR. Morton wrote a note and hid it in a book. The next day Bowser awoke. Mario jumped in the window and said that Bowser JR killed the Koopalings. Bowser JR denied and Bowser accused Mario of the Koopalings death. From this day on Bowser JR wants to kill Mario for the heck of it, but Bowser now has family to fight for. What will he do when he discovers the truth....? The world may never know..... That is the question that has plagued Mario fans for over a decade. This new bouncing baby boy, Bowser, Jr., only reinforces the question that's been on all our minds: how is Bowser making these things?! I will attempt to investigate this matter using first Mario rationale and then a more scientific approach in three separate theories -- The Stork Theory, The Breeding Theory, and the Nintendo Theory. In addition I will use my knowledge of biology to criticize the Peach + Bowser Theory and the Asexual Reproduction Theory. Enjoy! THE STORK THEORY "A stork hurries across the dusky, pre-dawn sky. In his bill, he supports a pair of twins, who are to be delivered to their parents as soon as possible." - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. All of us who have played Yoshi's Island recognize the above quote from either the game manual or the in-game introduction. In Yoshi's Island it explains that babies are delivered to their parents via big white birds. How are they made? That, my friends, is never explained -- perhaps they were grown in a cabbage patch. So what does this theory say? King Koopa is a regular subscriber to Baby Land. When he wants a darling little turtle-monster he just phones in his request and has one flown on over to his creepy castle. Maybe baby Bowser II is a product of empty-nest syndrome. All the other Koopa Kids have grown up, moved out of the castle, and gotten married and now poor Bowser is lonely. Or maybe he thought this new squirt could be fostered to kick some plumber butt. Either way, he ordered a new shelled babe swaddled in cloth and got it 4-to-6 weeks later. THE BREEDING THEORY "When a boy turtle loves a girl turtle..." - A mother Koopa Troopa to her daughter? Here I'll explain some of the basics behind how turtles breed. I think it's undisputed that Bowser is a turtle (or, if you choose to argue, that he is at least some sort of reptile), and with this theory we'll explore how turtles reproduce, how sex is determined (why are so many of Bowser's little one's boys?), and the behavior of mating turtle-folk. First it should be noted that girl turtles are usually much larger than boy turtles. This means that Mrs. Koopa(s) is probably twice the size of her mate -- scary thought. Without getting too graphic I'll now explain how they would make a baby. Sometime in late summer and autumn the girl turtle is ready to mate. Turtles don't mate like mammals, instead the boy turtle secretes discharge directly onto his skin via sex glands and then just rubs up against the girl turtle. Like smearing jam on a slice of bread (I hope you're not eating toast for breakfast as you read this). Three months later she pops out her eggs -- as many as 20 of them at a time! -- nests them and then in about four months they hatch. Presto! Baby turtles are born! (allsands.com) The gender of the turtle is determined by the temperature of the nest they're raised in, since most lack x or y sex chromosomes. For turtles, warm nests produce mostly girls and cold nests produce mostly boys. That said, Bowser probably nests his little eggs up North somewhere. (eeb.uconn.edu) Finally, the behavior of turtles. This one helps explain the gap between Bowser Junior's birth and the births of his siblings. The breeding season for marine turtles isn't every year. Instead, it's every two to eight years! This explains why baby Bowser, Jr., wasn't born with the rest. He's the product of a new mating season! (reefed.edu) This theory says that Bowser has a mate, reproduces with her every half dozen years or so, and then nests those eggs in a cold environment. THE NINTENDO THEORY Time and time again Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, has insisted that he doesn't follow or wish to follow any set storyline or plot. He's basically just slapping together Mario games, folks. And no matter how we try to connect the dots, the logic doesn't matter to them -- they're making money even if they don't answer all the questions, right? You won't boycott their games simply because you don't know how Bowser makes babies, will you? This theory says that Nintendo will do whatever it wants to do with Mario -- including team Mario up with Bowser (something it does in many games), ignore the questions its game series brings up (something it does in all of its games), and pop out cute little baby Bowser II because we all think he is so adorable. CRITICISM There are two major theories I haven't touched. Why? Because they wouldn't work. I'll now explain (or more correctly, tear apart) those theories here. First, could the princess be the mother of Bowser's kids?! Nope. Reptiles and mammals (or fungi, for that matter) can't reproduce with each other. Hell, pardon my French, mammals and mammals can't even reproduce with one another -- no matter how long you keep a cow in the same room as a badger, they won't and can't breed! Only organisms within the same species may mate. Bowser and Peach are completely different species. Second, maybe Bowser's asexual? This wouldn't work for many reasons. First, Bowser is known as a "he" and shows masculine attributes, while his children are also given genders. Second, if asexuality was a factor then all of Bowser's children would look exactly like him -- and the seven of them before Bowser Junior don't look like carbon copies of their father, but the combination of a mother and father (two genetic sources). That leads to the third point, turtles don't reproduce asexually. Thank you for marching through this little essay. Allow me to explain Princess Betty-Lou Peach grew up on a small farm in Sporeville (the Mushroom Kingdom's equivalent to Middle-of-nowhere, Iowa) She wasn't popular...she had braces and classes, freckles and knobby knees, in fact the only one who would date her in high school was the class monkey...that's right ladies and gentlemen, I’m talking 'bout Donkey Kong. He asked the not-so-fair princess to accompany him to their high school Prom, and since no one else would go near here, well, she reluctantly accepted. Donkey Kong showed her a nice time, he rented an Airship, took her to Pizza hut for a Goomba and Blooper stuffed-crust pizza. They went to Prom, danced to YMCA, snapped the picture, and then it was off to the after party. After a few drinks, Betty-Lou Peach grabbed Donkey Kong by the tie (the only thing he wore to prom) and dragged him into one of the back rooms...one thing led to another, and well let's just say Donkey Kong went home with a smile on his face. Now, I know you're all thinking, "Pete, what does this have to do with Bowser Jr.??" Well, wait just a minute Senor poopie-pants and I’ll tell you. Princess Betty-Lou Peach was pregnant. That's right, Donkey-Kong Jr. popped up about 9 months later. Shortly after that Princess Peach took off to the big city (leaving a heartbroken Donkey Kong in tears holding the baby.) A whirlwind of change and culture, within just a few months she had plastic surgery, laser vision correction, and a membership to the gym and changed her name (To Pauline) and became the vision of loveliness we see today. She also met a new boyfriend. That's right, everyone's favorite plumber Mario. Well, to make a short story shorter, Donkey Kong threw a fit and came to reclaim his love; Mario thwarted his plans and captured the enraged ape only to be avenged by DK JR. After this, Mario got a full confession out of Princess Peach and took a small vacation to deal with his angst (Hence SML) as he left she begged for him to return and promised she would change. While he was gone, of course, she picked up the phone and called her other boy-toy, Bowser. They were together the entire time Mario was away; she became pregnant again, but luckily delivered before Mario returned. She knew Mario would be furious and leave her for good if he knew of the events with his sworn enemy Bowser. So she decided to get her girlish figure back, not claim the kid, and work hard to be a good little princess for our corpulent hero. But Bowser didn’t' want to play that game. He peach-napped said Princess multiple times, but Mario always came back to claim his pure beloved. Bowser tried multiple times to tell Mario the truth...but since he only spoke in growls and snarls, Mario never got the message. Anyway, after saving the day, Mario and Peach went back to Mario's Pad and conceived little Baby Mario. As you can see...Peach is a rather "easy going" woman, her years of high school teasing have scarred her for life. How many other children does she have? Is she ever going to tell the truth? Or is Bowser Jr. simply going to be a future therapy bill? You make the call. Just always remember the moral of the story...Don't take a monkey to your high-school Prom. So he built a time machine to get help from the past - the help was hisself at a age of 1 day. (Hey, he was Superman in these days!) But bad luck: Baby Luigi and Baby Bowser jumped into the time machine too. So all three were transported into the present. That's why they appear in the newer games. In fact Baby Bowser is NOT Bowser's son, he is Bowser itself - a few years younger. What is about the Koopa Kids? They were all defeated by Mario in SMW. They fell in lava or exploded because Mario jumped on them (is he really so fat?) Bowser never died. He just flew away or something else. Perhaps Mario is really too silly in his old days... How though? It's just like how Mario and Baby Mario can be in the same game (or Luigi and Baby Luigi, in Mario Kart: D.D.). So Bowser must have used a Time Machine to bring himself back so that he has double the power. NAME: Bowser_Fan thoughts: Where'd Bowser Jr. come from? Well, I don't see why he couldn't have came from the same place as the other koopalings. All eight of them probably had some mysterious mother, most likely the same two parents for all of them because the koopalings look so much alike (Ludwig and Larry's blue hair, Larry and Iggy's long teeth, Wendy and Roy's pink shells, etc.). And since Bowser Sr. is the King of Koopas [crowd cheers], he must have married his children's mother--it would be very dishonorable to Bowser's royal family to have kids with someone he didn't marry, if you know what I mean. Where was Bowser Jr. during the older Mario games? Mentioned on this site before, the koopalings do look like they're in their teens, while Bowser Jr. looks to be about 7 or 8 years old. The reason he didn't show up in the previous Mario games was probably because he was way too young to fight. So yes, Bowser Jr. was always around, but he was behind the scenes, probably eating Yoshi crackers and beating up Mario dolls [crowd cheers again]. Now for the last question: Where'd the koopalings go? They're latest appearance was in Super Mario World (not including the Mario Advance series). Almost every time when Mario defeated a koopaling and blew up, pounded or launched their fortress somewhere, a speech bubble thing would pop up saying something like "so-and-so's something days are over". This could mean that Mario killed them [crowd boos], but I doubt that Mario would be THAT heartless towards a bunch of children even though the they were his enemies--and besides, Bowser would show some kind of a reaction to it if he did. So those messages might have meant that they learned their lesson not to deal with Mario or something else prevented them from battling Mario. But still, many other things could have happened too: they may have been kidnapped, or they ran away, or something else weird like that. He wasn't in the previous games because he WASN'T born! He is a little brother to the other 7. E-Mail: n/a NAME: Someguy thoughts: First off, why the origanal Koopa Kids dissapeared: After being beaten by Mario two or three times, Bowser got frustrated with the kids. Their repeated failures angered him, so he sent them to a closed off region near the top of the castle, telling them to go build traps and rooms for Mario up there. He locked the door, trapping the kids in their newly built rooms. Later, that section of the castle was taken off, with the Kooplings unknowingly still in there, to be put in the flying castle seen in Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. When Cackleta took over Bowser's body and his army, she saw all the Kooplings, somehow still alive, so she, along with some Magikoopas, strengthened them up and got them in top condition to protect the door to her area. Where are they now? When they got beaten, they didn't have any escape from the castle, so it is assumed that they blew out of the castle into the ocean along with Bowser, and were left there to drown unknowingly, while Bowser was sent back to his castle on the plane back to the Kingdom,! as seen in the credits. Another possibility is that they were blown all the way back to the Mushroom Kingdom. What about Bowser Jr.? : When Bowser sent his kids to the top of the tower, he at first felt fine. Later, he started feeling lonely, so he had Kamek mutate a female Koopa Troopa or something to be able to mate with, using the magic to make all the genes be Bowser's and none be the koopa's, which is why he looks so much like Bowser. The female koopa was later boiled, fried, or some other horrible way Bowser decided to use to dispose of her. That's my idea, hope it's good compared to others.
