For months there has been speculation of an animated Mario movie released only in Japan.  However there is no solid proof that such a movie exists.

Clue 1 - Phantaz
A guy by the name of Phantaz and been writing to BOTH the SMBhq and TMK mailbags talking about this movie.  Here is what he said in both mailbags:

TMK  - April 15, 2003
After doing an extensive research quest, I found out quite a bit about the "lost" Mario movie. It was directed by a man named HAKA, a popular Japanese director. It was released July 20, 1986. It was actually quite a popular movie in Japan. It was about 60 minutes long, and had Mario rescuing the princess.
While no one ever gave an official reason as to why it did not make an American release, the guesses are because of the sexuality and racism that is considered ok in Japan. You can actuallyfind the movie off of EBAY, or a P2P file program. Such as Kazaa, Grokster or Morpheus. I got mine off of Kazaa and it is pretty decent. I burned it to DVD.
For more information on this movie go to Pelleas.net.I have also gotten in touch with the director of the movie section at Supe rMario Brothers Headquarters. So you may find it their soon.
SMBhq - April 18, 2003
I recently bought a movie off EBAY. It is a VHS with the 'lost' Mario movie. It is a movie called Grand Mission To Rescue Princees Peach. It is an hour long cartoon pretty good to. I just thought u might want to know beacuase your movie guy won't accept my info

Clue 2 - The Site
Phantaz linked to a site (see above), which has the filmography of Japanese director named Masami Hata (who DOES exist).  Here is what this site says about this movie:
This film appears never to have been released on video in or outside of Japan subsequent to its theatrical release, making it probably the most elusive Hata film. (talk about missed marketing opportunities!) This is doubly unfortunate because the film is in fact given a fairly positive review in 70 Years of Theatrical Films, whose writers are not prone to hyperbole. The closest thing available at this time is a film comic published in Japan around the time of the theatrical release.

Although I don't know the specifics, the animation studio that produced this film, Grouper Productions, was apparently some sort of re-incarnation of the old Sanrio Films studio. Most of the main staff members like animation directors Maya Matsuyama, Shigeru Yamamoto and Mikiharu Akabori continued working together on under this new umbrella. Hence, the Sanrio films produced hereon out were produced by Grouper Productions.

Problems:
Everything sounds good so far except for a few things:
  • The description says the the film appears to never have been released on video in outside of Japan.  However, Phantaz says that he got the VHS of E-Bay.
    • That's more that a bit weird don't you think
  • After doing a search for "Super Mario Brothers: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach" on various search engines, I can't find anything on this movie OTHER than them the above page (then again that's perhaps why it's 'lost')

Does the 'lost' Mario movie truely exist?

Here is my conclusion based on the feedback:

The "lost" Mario Movie really did exist in theatres and it probably only exists on VHS and DVD in bootlegs.

Anyways, here is what you thought:

It could have been because Mario was sucha huge smash hit, that Movie producers could use the idea for great movie so they could get lots of money, but I wasn\'t born at that time, so It may or may not have been a huge smash hit. Mayby they made it because they where bored, or mayby it was going to be a interduction to Mario back in 1981, but had to edited alot, so they held it back, until it came out in 1986. Any way, I am just giving my opinion.

The VHS I got is from Japan, it has English subtitles, and I got the movie off of Kazaa, Morpheus, and Grokster. It is real, and it was not prbably released because of its sexuality. It may not have also been released because from some research I did (in a japnese movie book) it said it was a promotion that came with the NES.

Thoughts: It is possible that some dude bought the VHS from Japan and then sold it on E-Bay. However, I wonder what Phantaz meant with sexuality and racism when he talked about it (I don\'t personally see how anyone could come up with anything sexy about mario and in most cases that an Asian movie has featured racistic elements its usually the Chinese attacking the Japanese). The anime does sound real in a way since most VG-Animes (like the one made based on Sonic) are usually 60 minutes long (or in two 30 minute episodes). Also the Sonic anime wasn\'t too consistant with usage of \"the finger\" so I can in a way see where Phantaz is going with his claims. Still, Mario is such a big brand that I think Nintendo would have brought it out of Japan in one way or another, if it really existed. That is why I think it DOES NOT exist!

Thoughts: I think that this movie DOES exist. It must\'ve been released in the 90\'s or the 80\'s (not including 1980, 1981, or any other movie that is lower than 1985.) Our movie was with real actors who were Bob Hoskins (From \"Who Framed Roger Rabbit\") and John Leguizamo (from \"Ice Age\"). Why does Japan have better movies and other products than us? ():I

Email: Catmandu33C@aol.com
Thoughts: Here\'s my theory: I went t check out Pellas.net and I found some stuff I could use. It said that it may not have been released because of racism and stuff like that. But to my opinion, couldn\'t they release it in North America, but have it rated R? It probobly wouldn\'t be good for kids, so they\'d limit it to an R rating. And if it did really exist, I personally think they made a big mistake only releasing it in Japan. It may have existed, it may not have. Who knows? I don\'t. Maybe some things are just better left unanswered...

Thoughts: I think I may know what happened... the animated cartoon might have been the Super Mario Bros. Movie ( the one with actors) original form! Then, people in america might have thought it would be better if they put it with real actors ( and they changed Peach with Daisy) . Or, that scene from the movie could be just a goofer who made the rumor and could draw good. Or, maybe it was released in Japan, but not in the U.S. where they thought it wouldn\'t make enough money. Or it could just be that other stuff that I can\'t remember that were said in this.

It is possible that the movie might be a pirate(A good one), but it is also possible that no other site may have heard of this movie and therefore have not created a page about it. In short Whether it exists or not is a complete mystery until more evidence is gathered. Phantaz it`s better if you provide a picture of the VHS or something. We can`t believe this yet with too little evidence

(For example: \"The Legend of Dratini\" in Pokemon, \"Gohan Attacks\" in DragonBall Z, and at least ten episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh!).... and so I say.... it does indeed exist. Perhaps one day the movie will be dubbed and released...as they did with \"Beauty and the Beach\" in Pokemon, which was originally banned because of the fact that James\'s crossdressing went too far. (Pokemon fans will know what I mean ;-) ...)... but all we can do is hope... and email Nintendo!

B) I Seriously doubt it was ever released on video or DVD in or outside Japan C) I hardly doubt it was ever Subtitled or Dubbed in any way. - Phantaz, Ya need to show us a picture of the VHS or a screenshot of it sooner or later or the film may never see the light of day again.

Thoughts: I highly believe it\'s possible. Although I cannot submit any substantial proof, I can say this. You remember the Pokemon movie we got in america called, Mewtwo Strikes Back? Well, that wasn\'t the first movie. It was for america, but it wasn\'t for japan. Ask Nintendo themselves to confirm this. Starfox? Well the original was just a progam to test the SNES\' FX chip. People liked it so much, that they made a full game. And to no real suprise, japan made a sequal and kept it to themselves. Ever heard of Pokemon Green version? If not, it\'s because that it was a japan only game. Also, more evidence. Mew cannot be obtained in the american versions of Red, Blue, and Yellow Pokemon games, unless by a trade with nintendo or by a Game Enhancer. Now in japan, you can get Mew by collecting all 150 Pokemon. Not in america. See where this is going? See my point? Personal opinion: The movie exists.

I can understand when Phantaz said it may contain racism or sexuality. You know, like seeing the princesses panties or something. Panty shots are always thrown into japanese cartoons. You can\'t watch at least two or three of an anime series and not see at least ONE panty shot or something perverted.

Thoughts: Hi.Me again...I called nintendo for info on this \"mystery\"I told them it is on ebay and file shareing services, and it was never realsed on video probably for sexuality. They claimed that anything released only in Japan will not be recorded into their databases.I understand you mentioned that it`s farfetched that it is on a recorded tape but not released on official tapes. My belief is the person who started this \"wild goose chase\" found this on tv and taped it like any other obsessed fan.I hope this information helps.I am starting to have a strong belief this won`t have sexuality. The other Japanese shows are probably considered adult things in Japan but the only reason it`s kiddy here was that people make things kiddy just from cheap editting.Mario wasn`t like that.Shigeru himself has worked on this he probably wouldn`t allow it because in a issue of Nintendo power they said there would never be a X rated Mario game. This must apply to movies when it comes to permission to make the movie.

The reason its lost is 1) The ship that was bringing the amecan & UK copies sank. 2) After the Failure of the live Movie Nintendo decided not to release any more mario movies 3) All producers outside of Japan were fighting over who would make the Movie That they hit each other with the tape and it broke and the japenese got pissed so they didn\'t give us another copy or 4) ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US (whatever that means?.?)

Thoughts: well DUH it exists. you\'d think companies would want to market in more than one country, and japan is a country comparable to the US of A prospective profits-wise. and since countries are different from each other (really???) you\'d want to market to them differently. in japan sex and other stuff sells to kids, while they don\'t in the US. for example, Pokemon released an episode in Japan but not America, in which Misty enters in the biggest boob contest. Also, they have that card of her hugging a staryu/starmie (iono pokemon its a lil too ish for me) nude, released only in japanese. so there you have it. even without the clues, its kind of obvious they would have something along the lines of sex and racism released in japan, but not in this country.

Thoughts: I think it exists. Here\'s a example to my theory: Some games are made in Japan and are never released here. Example: Wario and Mario(think of it as the movie). Now, if anyone here has played it correct me if I\'m wrong, but there probably isn\'t anything THAT bad in the game. And most likely, they might of not any people who wanted to translate and sell it or it was just a exclusive to Japan. End of Example 1. Also it was only to be released on video in Japan. Can\'t anyone from around the world get onto ebay? Maybe some japanese guy did want the movie anymore and sold it to him. And about the search engine thing, never try them, they never work....
