SMBHQ MAILBAG

FOR THE DATE OF
February 27, 2010

Well it's been around nine months since the last edition of the mailbag. Since then, we lost two responsers and regained one. I hope you enjoy.

Hi, I am looking for the old raccoon Mario doll, do you know anywhere I can find one? I have already looked on eBay and other places like that, please help me find one.

Thank you,
Jessica

Sean Kelly If you can't find it on eBay, you can always go the old fashioned route and check out flea markets and thrift stores.

Kyle Orland Did you try eBay? Oh, you did? How about eBay? Oh, you tried that too? Maybe eBa... no... I bet you tried that.

Sorry, can't help ya.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan I found this interesting similar but not it example.

Unfortunately, the old Mario toys are limited in number and many may have been lost to the ravages of time. You'll just have to keep on searching for it for now.

GameGuru Trust me, you don't want that. Get one of the recent Mario toys instead.

Super Toad Nope.

Super Mario 64 was one of the best Mario games. I think we all know that. But whenever people have tried to make a sequel, it wasn't really that good. Super Mario 64 DS was just the same game repeated; except they removed the analogue stick, which meant that it was very hard to play. Unofficial sequels, hacks of the game have been made, but most of them are not very good. E.G. "Super Mario 64 Beta" which featured some minor additions such as water mines. Well; I'm pleased to say someone has actually came up with a good unofficial sequel. I am unsure if you have heard of it, which is why I sent you this message. All the levels have been completely changed - there is not one level which has not been redesigned. There is day and night features, you are able to switch between Mario and Luigi, new music, and there are many new levels and challenges. If you haven't heard of this amazing accomplishment, then you need to. It's called "Super Mario 64: The Missing Stars" and has 38 stars and even has an appearance of Fire Mario. I know this is an advertisement in a way, but I didn't want you Mario critics to miss out. This is the video for the V1.1 release. I didn't make this hack, or help make it in any way. It was made by Frauber. (aka Messiaen) Frauber did not tell me to tell you about this so it is not his fault in any way if this ends up in the Haul of Shame. :P

Donez35

Sean Kelly No Comment.

Kyle Orland Looks like an impressive hack, though I'd be loathe to call is a "sequel" to Super Mario 64 (after all, what were Mario Sunshine and Galaxy is not SM64 sequels? I'm not set up for N64 emulation up here in Pittsburgh, but if I ever find some time to get the necessary downloads and controller attachments, I'll try this one out.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan I am the mod of the forum where it was made and am well aware of it.

There is also more work on a model importer in progress (which may lead to even better hacks), although I would caution people trying to get this game that it is a bit tempermental and may require trying different emulators to work.

Also it was sort of a team project at one point, so it may be a good idea to Read the official thread if you're interested.

Although of note, SMBHQ does not distribute ROMs, and neither does that forum; it distributes a patch, required to change the rom into the new game.

GameGuru What? We're advertising ROM Hacks now?

Super Toad I usually don't think game hacks come anywhere close to matching the level design in the original games. The ones I've played have always been made with the 2D platformers though. Since this is SM64 we're talking about, I'm sure it couldn't be any worse than the original.

Hi,

I have been playing this game for ages now and have managed to complete it, but haven't even touched world 4 or 7 and i really want to be able to. I have looked on the official website and it says to go to world 2 to get an alternate route to world 4 but my alternate route took me to world 5 instead...i have collected every single star thinking that that may be the reason but nothing seems to help me get to world 4 and world 7. Any ideas???

Carrie

Sean Kelly Next time you ask a question about New Super Mario Bros, make sure to include the name of the game in the question because I have no idea what Mario game you are talking about. :P (Use mini Mario)

Kyle Orland Wow... you didn't think to include the name of the game you're playing? No matter, it's pretty obviously New Super Mario Bros. on the DS. You have to beat World 2 as mini Mario to unlock World 4, and beat World 5 mini-fied to get to World 7. Hope that helps!

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan We built this game on... ROCK AND ROLLLL...

Sorry, but I don't know what game you're playing. SM64? SM64DS? NSMBWii? In any case, GameFAQs is likely to have the answer.

GameGuru From the description, it appears "this game" is the New Super Mario Bros. for DS. Use Mini Mushrooms and defeat the Castle bosses of World 2 and World 5 while using it. You will then get to the Worlds you seek.

Super Toad Sometimes it helps to give us the name of the game, but it sounds like NSMB. To get to World 4 you need to beat World 2's boss as mini Mario then do the same in World 5 to unlock World 7. It could be the most idiotic idea in any of the 2D Mario games, but I suppose that's beside the point.

I know this game is old but I bought it and it's quite fun. Now here I am at Booster's keep. Bowser has just told me he is going back to his castle, so I went back (without going through the keeps or towns) and straight to Vista Hill, only for nothing. And reading around online, it says he joins your party. That certainly did not happen in my game. Can you please help? Thank you from reading my message.

P.S. I am playing a version from the Wii, which I think is 100% similar, is it?

Julian

Sean Kelly Next time you ask a question about Super Mario RPG, make sure to include the name of the game in the question because I have no idea what Mario game you are talking about. :P (Bowser DOES join your party)

Kyle Orland OK, why doesn't anyone mention the NAME of the game's they're playing in the e-mails. I mean, I know it's Super Mario RPG from context, but SHEESH!

Anyway, I think you have to go to Booster Tower, not to Vista Hill. At least that's what the guide says. I don't remember.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan If I recall, you have to talk to him or some such, as then a rather shocking event is triggered which causes all the mayhem you heard about this. And yes, the Wii version is the same, apart from emulator issues which may cause slight sound or graphics issues (but don't change the game.)

GameGuru Screw Bowser. Try entering Booster's Keep instead. You will be surprised.

Super Toad I only vaguely remember it, but I think Bowser joins you in Booster's Tower. You definitely don't have to do anything special though. The story is linear and there's no way to avoid the event if you continue to progress in the game.

Hi I'm currently looking around the web - without much luck so far - trying to find a Mario Fanclub where you can sing up and become a member - that sort of thing. Do you happen to know if such a things exists? If so could you provide me with details?
Many thanks
Richard
Sean Kelly Closest thing is Club Nintendo

Kyle Orland Join the Nintendo Fun Club Today.

P.S. No.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan Sing up? I think you mean sign up. There's the official Nintendo club, although it's more about buying games. You'd probably have an easier time googling for some Mario forums and joining them.

GameGuru Singing to enter a Mario fanclub? So you need to get lyrics and stuff to practice... Perhaps learn how to "Do the Mario."

Super Toad I don't know about a fanclub, but you should look for a Mario forum. There's plenty of them. SMBHQ has one, but I don't know how active it is these days.

Hey can you help me in SMG?

I've gotten a letter from luigi, showing him in one of the 2 beehive galaxies; I checked both of them high and low, yet NO LUIGI!! CAN FOU HELP?!!\

Mallow-teh-Marshmellow

Sean Kelly I'll tell you once I buy a Wii and play the game.

Kyle Orland I remember this one being really tough, but I don't remember how I eventually found him. Sorry.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan Luigi is missing! Oh no! It's like Mario is Missing in reverse! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!

...

Well, I don't recall exactly, but he tends to hide right near the star itself, so you may want to search there. The others may have played the game more recently than me.

GameGuru Not without said picture.

Super Toad Nope, I haven't played much of SMG.

Me and my wife have broken out our super Nintendo after Christmas for the kids 8&10.... K well they brought to our attention on smb3 level5 far right castle ...2 screens before all white board levels 4,5,6....if ur Mario will fly u can spin above far right green port n go above it to see an open area w/only 1 block to do what with is our ? N where this may take us.....thanks for any advise in advance . Signed , Stumped Family ...
Sean Kelly OK, I have Super Nintendo, Kids, SMB3 Level 5, and White Board Levels. The rest is all greek to me.

Kyle Orland Wow, was that English? After reading this over and over, I think you guys are in the World 5 Tower, which takes you to the cloud portion of the world, and you've flown above the green pipe at the end of the level and found the hidden area with a single block. I'm relatively sure there is nothing to this area.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan Let me try to understand this... "Me and my wife broke out our SNES after Christmas for our two kids. They brought to our attention that in SMB3, the level 5 far right castle... which is two screens before the all white board levels 4, 5, and 6. If you're Mario with flying powers you can spin above the far right green part and go above it and see an open area with only 1 block. What is with this? Where may this take us? That is our question."

Well, I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge, but weird spots like that usually contain goodies, unless you flew outside the level, in which case, there's nothing there and it's just a weird bug.

GameGuru It's there?

Super Toad Maybe next time you should have the 10 year old proofread your message so we could have some chance of understanding the question. I could probably figure out what you're talking about if I actually took out the game and played to world(?) 5, but as you're too lazy to even type full words you really shouldn't expect us to do that.

Hey SMBHQ Staff. I was just wondering if there was going to be any Contests anytime soon since the last one was way back when MK Wii came out.

MC Hammer Bro.

Sean Kelly I would absolutely love to have another contest, however there were some issues with winners not recieving the prizes (which Kyle provides). As such, I would rather not have any contests than face the ire of disgruntled contest winners.

Kyle Orland Yeah, after some logistical problems with the last constest (involving games getting lost in the mail) I'm kind of loathe to do another contest as well.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

MetalMan As cool as contests are, they can be a bit difficult to do some times. Maybe if we became more active we could have more staff members/money to do more contests and deal with the prize sending issues.

GameGuru You know, I'd be peeved too if I didn't get a prize for winning a contest.

Super Toad How about listing the prize as a "surprise." You can then get a free shipping box, drop a finely printed card that says "Congratulations! Surprised?" in the empty box, and ship it off to the winner. To make it even more surprising, you can put the note in an empty game box. Oh, was the idea supposed to prevent disgruntled contest winners?
