SMBHQ MAILBAG

FOR THE DATE OF
January 28, 2008

A Quick Message from Sean Kelly:

The SMBHQ Mailbag officially began in December 1999, meaning that this little Q&A section is entering its tenth year.

I have been hosting the mailbags since 2002 and throughout the years I have had an assorted range of co-responders. The longest of these have been PeguinMan, who dates back to the time when the mailbag rotated responders.

As the year begins, we say goodbye to two responders and we hope to say hello to a new one. Details of the new responder search will be posted shortly. In the meantime, enjoy the mailbag.

I’m looking for EASY FOR PIANO SHEET MUSIC that ‘s heard all through the Super Mario video game. Hoping you have it, and if not, you can tell me where to get it. I have a student who would like to play it very much! Judy Sleed
Sean Kelly I would give the sterotypical ebay answer, but I don't know if such a book exists. Maybe you can trying playing by ear.

Kyle Orland Are you looking for a specific product or something? A quick google search turned this up: http://gprime.net/images/mariopiano/. Hope it's what you're looking for.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan Sorry to tell you, but playing Mario music is not for novices. If your student can play Chopin's Revolutionary Etude forwards AND backwards, then we'll talk.

GameGuru Just Google for it.

Super Toad Stop trying to let your student take the EASY way out and teach him how to read the hard stuff!

I have a question based on sprite comics. I've been inspired by NC, and I would love to start a comic on my own. Unfortunatly, I have no idea on where to start... could you help?

Benjamin Rivers

Sean Kelly First, we need a lot of free time, because creating comics (espcially full-length one) can be time consuming.

I would recommend a good image-editor that supports layers (GIMP is a good open-source one -- and is the program I use.) Layers will allow you to easily make changes to subsequent frames.

As for sprites, some good sites can be found on the links page.

The average frame resolution is 350x224 and I use Bolded size 11 Arial font for text.

As you the rest, it's up to you.

Kyle Orland Here's where to start: http://www.smbhq.com/nc/cmain.html

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan You can start by GOING OUTSIDE. Seriously, I strongly advise against it, for your sake and the sake of the internet at large.

GameGuru Spriters Resource served us well for SSS. Go check it out.

Super Toad Where to start? Typically a blank image.

Ack! I don't have the DSi! do DSi games work in a normal DS? (Please don't put me in the haul of shame)

-Luigifan
Sean Kelly No, you avoided the haul, but I hope everyone will soon realize that the DSi is just an (in my opinion, unnecessary) upgrade to the DS hardware.

Kyle Orland Er, no one in the U.S. has the DSi yet. In the future, there may be some games that use the DSi's camera functionsthat won't work on other DSes, but otherwise there should be no compatibility issues between the two systems.

Editor's Note: Except for games (such as Guitar Hero: On Tour) that use the, now MIA, GBA slot.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan DSi games work in the DS, but first you have to buy a special DSi adapter. It looks like a DSi and is about as expensive as one, and you don't actually use the original DS, but honestly I don't know where I was going with this.

GameGuru No, but the only DSi games are downloadable, so yeah...

Super Toad *supertoad locks Luigifan in the Hall of Shame and throws away the key.*

Why is Sonic Mario's arch enemy?

Everyone knows Mario is a plumber but some how sonic hates him. Do you know why?

Sincerly Avi
Sean Kelly I thought Bowser was Mario's arch-enemy.

Seriously thought, any percieved hatred being Sonic and Mario probably comes from the fact that Sega was Nintendo's main competition during the pre-Playstation days (late-80s/early-90s).

Kyle Orland I don't know that I'd call Sonic and Mario arch enemies, as they didn't even appear in a game together until last year. Bowser or possibly Wario would be a better pick for a classic arch-enemy.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan I could say something about how Sonic is jealous that Mario still stars in tolerable games, but that's too easy. Hedgehogs are just the natural enemies of plumbers, that's all.

GameGuru This goes back to a long forgotten time known as the early 1990s. The Sega Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo did do battle and it was fierce and epic. Mario is Nintendo's mascot and Sonic is Sega's mascot so they were thusly enemies. Nowaday, Mario and Sonic are on good terms having even crossed over twice.

Super Toad Most people think Sonic is a hedgehog, but that is really only his assumed identity. Sonic is actually made of that gunk that clogs drains. Hope that clears it up.

Can you get the origianl super mario brothers game on a computer system that you plug in to the television.

nicky shakespeare
Sean Kelly Yeah, it's called the Nintendo Entertainment System. People seem to forget that a console is just a computer.

Kyle Orland If you use emulators, sure.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan Well, considering the NES is technically a computer, yes you can.

GameGuru You can get the original Super Mario Bros on the Wii's Virtual Console for $5.

Super Toad It's called an NES. Or an SNES. Or a Wii. But I assume you mean a standalone device that has the game built in. In that case, no.

Dear SMBHQ

I have been a long time viewer of your site and just have been wanting to send you mail but this is a few game questions.

Apparently from what i have seen on G4 tv(it's a video game network) there will be a new mario rpg game with the all stars and partner in time like set up. personally i would like to see a sequel or the return of legend of the seven stars and if that would happen then i would love to see luigi return., but thats just some of my wishes concerning it.

Also why is it that the wii gets one legite mario game while the nes and snes got say 3 games. It seems that mario games are like first run and then poof next mario game is only coming out when a new console is whats the deal. Even though things like starfox are a bit diffrent. It seems Nintendo makes one game and then dosent decide to make a new one till a there new console is out. wii has been out for 2 1/2- to 3 years you would think a new mario game wuld be out. it would be a way fornintendo to earn more money as well.

when i mean mario game i mean the good ole platforming. but then again nintendo may be working on something new but it seems mario's not getting enough legitimate games. Well thats a bit of ranting.

Starfox needs to return . As well as things like contra. heres a even greater idea a non-anime castlevania after they rpged it up and animnized it the game kinda got dull to me. basic castle vania 4 stuff and 3 and 1 mechnics would work for me. ohh also blaster master would be great to see a return, Anyways i sent this to see if you thnk mario should make a return to platforming more often and what other games should return to there nintendo origens and get a new game on the wii or ds. sincerly

Colin.
A nintendo fan ever since he picked up super mario world. And still thought mario was better when he first played sonic at 6.

Sean Kelly I know there's a new Mario RPG coming out for DS, but I don't know if that's the game that was mentioned on G4 (and yes I know what G4 is, I have it -- at least the Canadian version).

As for game frequency, these days there seems to be more pressure to be on a five year cycle before moving onto the next system, while the NES was active for nearly a decade.

Kyle Orland Wow, that's a lot of questions.

1) A direct sequel to "Seven Stars" sems unlikely. Even though Square and Nintendo are slightly more buddy buddy now, the Mario RPG handling duties have been handed off to Intelligent Systems, who are unlikely to want to give them up now.

2) Back in the days of the NES, games were slightly easier to make and didn't require such big teams and long lead times. You just needed a basic 2D engine and then to create the levels. A game like Super Mario Galaxy takea lot more development time.

3) OK then!

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan I could answer this question, but I'm too busy listening to the best song of the 90's, the Quad City DJs' 'Space Jam'.

GameGuru Super Mario RPG is on the Virtual Console now, as for a sequel to it, there are rights issues between Nintendo and Square Enix, although the Mario & Luigi are made by the same team and had Geno cameo in the first. The SNES only had Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars, which was an enhanced port of the four NES Mario games. As for Starfox, Contra, and Castlevania, this is a Mario fansite, so we don't talk about those series... However, Contra 4 came out on the DS, so go pick it up!

Super Toad Games are (unfortunately) a lot more complex than they were in the SNES days, so we expect fewer Mario games per system these days.

Hello, my 8 year old son Braedy is a huge fan and would like to send something to Mario. Is there an address?

Thanks so much,

Corrina

Sean Kelly You could try sending a letter directly to Nintendo. The address should be at the back of most instruction manuals.

Kyle Orland 1 Mario Way, Marioville, MA, 12345

Seriously, send it to Nintendo of America in Redmond, WA. I bet you get a cutesy reply, even.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan I don't think the Postal System delivers to the Mushroom Kingdom. Nintendo might be a better choice.

GameGuru I'm not completely sure where one can contact the Mario Bros. They don't live in Brooklyn anymore.

Super Toad Of course:

1 Mario Pad,
Mushroom King.

Good luck sending it though: most mail is lost in the transition to fictional dimensions.

To SMBHQ crew: I don't know if this yesterday's news or not, but I was on Youtube and I came across some Super Mario Bros. anime cartoons, unfortunately the language was in Japanese (some where subtitled). What would the possibility of getting a hold of these cartoons re-edited and sold in the SMBHQ store? PS: Thanks and keep up the good work with the site, its my home page -Omar
Sean Kelly Sorry, the SMBHQ store only sells products available on Amazon.com

Kyle Orland The chances seem very slim, I would say. I haven't heard of any plans to re-release this film, in either Japanese or English.

Jay Resop --INSERT RESPONSE HERE--

PenguinMan There's a better chance of a Mario game on the Playstation 4 happening before that does.

GameGuru Slim-to-nil, because there was only like a video tape made of it.

Super Toad I have no control over it, but I'd assume the possibility is nonexistent.
