SMBHQ MAILBAG

FOR THE DATE OF
December 20, 2007

GameGuru joins the responders in this holiday edition of the SMBHQ mailbag.

I'm trying to find the ornaments you show on your site but can't seem to locate them. Who produces them? Do you know where they are available? Thank you.

Joseph P. Higgins

Sean Kelly The really cliched answer would be eBay, but I'm in a festive mood so I will say to find some nice pictures of Mario and the gang, glue them onto some cardboard, add some string, and make your own.

Kyle Orland Wow... that was a long time ago. I found it on ebay and have no recollection of any of the details. You might have better luck with this Gamestop-produced ornament: http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product_id=322321

Jay Resop They are produced by a single man, who's name is T'all Kinet Komwuttulazani. He lives in the deep, dark caves high above the mountains by a spring that sings like a morning dove. Each ornament is hand crafted with his cold, hard hands, sweat, tears, heart, soul, mind, body, spirit, spit, mouthwash, feet, shoes, soles, pants, shirt, swimsuit, hair, hat, and his pet puppy, Scout. The process takes fifteen long, lonely, desolate, despairing, solemn, puissant years to make a single, solitary ornament. Each one he names as if it were a child. As if it were a part of his very, mortal, being. As if he had cried out to the heavens to speak out the name of God to grant him his one wish, his one passion, his one desire.

I think you can buy them for five bucks on ebay.-jay

PenguinMan Man, shouldn't Christmas be able things more important than trying to put up your favorite symbols of pop culture on a Christmas tree? Honestly... Now if you'll excuse me I think my Squirtle ornament fell off again.

GameGuru You will probably have to Ebay it... Or you can take the lazy way out and buy some of the Mario Keychains at the SMBHQ Store and hang them up like ornaments!

Super Toad yabe yrt

Hint: hold your computer screen up to a mirror for a clue.

PeachFan I'm not sure what Christmas ornaments you're talking about, but EB Games/Gamestop sells Super Mario Galaxy ornaments and Christmas stockings.

Crazyswordsman

hi my name is karl and am a big fan of the whole mario world but i was wonder why no progess has been made to make a new film the first one was great and they left such a big opening for another i think you should go for it hope to hear about an ideal for it soon thank

k.wise

Sean Kelly Ohhhh....this is my chance to flex my muscles as a movie buff.

The reason there was not a sequel was a simple example of economics:

  • The film cost about $42,000,000 to make
  • The film only grossed $20,915,465 in the U.S.
  • This resulted in a loss of $21,084,535
As you can see, the film only made back a little under half of its budget (though by now, with DVD sales and TV rights, it probably made back more).

The bottomline in Hollywood is: if it's not going to make a profit, it's not worth making.

That said, the SMB film was a risk in the fact that is was the first videogame adaptation. One of the downfalls of the SMB film was the it didn't stay true to the games and it portrayed the Mushroom Kingdom as some sort of industrial wasteland with the Koopas being evolved dinosaurs. I was 11 was the film came out and didn't really care about the differences, however my thoughts are different now.

The SMB film opened the way for other videogame adaptations. Some followed the same campy route (the Double Dragon movie comes to mind), while others were halfway decent (The first Mortal Kombat film, Tomb Raider). There even some films that were somewhere in between (Resident Evil series, Doom). However, we still have to way for the first truly successful video game adaptation.

Kyle Orland I was with you right up until you said "the first one was great." It was pretty awful in my opinion, and in the opinion of movie-goers everywhere -- it tanked at the box office. Given the lack of success for the first movie, convincing a studio to make a live-action sequel seems like a losing proposition. If they wanted to do a 3D animated adventure, though... then I'd be on board.

Jay Resop Are we talking about the same film???-jay

PenguinMan I was going to ask what went wrong in your upbringing to possibly think like this, but after seeing your e-mail address, it's fairly obvious.

Editor's Note: The e-mail address is not posted, but it starts with "i_was_hit_in_the_head"

GameGuru I've got an idea to resolve the cliffhanger from the movie, but it also pertains to a different question.

Super Toad Probably because the first one was so great it lost money.

PeachFan Good god, I hope they don't make another Mario movie. The first one was horrible, and scared the crap out of me when I first saw it. (Granted, I was still a kid...)

Crazyswordsman First Mario film....GOOD? Wow. That's a first, man. I applaud you for coming here and speaking your opinion!

Anyway, unfortunately, they only verb words. They don't make them nouns yet, so I can't really give you any ideals. -CSM

I have a question. Is there going to be an NC 2008 election?

PARKER INMAN

Sean Kelly There's been talk of it on the NC Message Board. Whether it actually happens is yet to be seen.

Kyle Orland Jay?

Jay Resop Dangit. A question for me. And a question that I likely won't be able to answer. Let's see... I believe your answer is yes. Or possibly no. And it very well be maybe. For you see, I don't really know the answer to that question. I would like to think that I will, some day. Perhaps when I am a stronger, wiser person, I may be able to be granted the gift and the honor of answering such a question, which is so far above me as of this very moment in time.

Luckily for me, I still have a good year before the "real" 2008 elections, so I have plenty of time to slack off.-jay

PenguinMan No, Jay has decided to turn NC into a dictactorship with himself appointed as Dictator-For-Life. I doubt he'd do anything that doesn't involve playing Final Fantasy games though.

GameGuru This is a question for Jay, but dang it, it WOULD be funny if Jill the Extra Gal won it after Bill and Churro.

Super Toad Perhaps, but after the coupe there will only be one name on the ballot.

PeachFan Don't ask me, I just answer the mail.

Crazyswordsman I'm trying to work on a campaign for Prince Lemmy Koopa, but school, real life, and my never ending search for a job are keeping me from doing that. I should be able to work on it some more over the holiday. I have a campaign website which is down when I'm writing this (there's a comix on the site), but I'm sure it'll turn up eventually. After I graduate from college this spring I'll have more time to work on it. -CSM

What are your opinions towards "Super Mario Galaxy" in terms if you think it's going to be any good? I also have another question for Jay Resop. How'd you feel about the new Mario game being called "Super Mario Galaxy" considering you thought of the name years ago in the top 10 list for "Titles that are more interesting than "Super Mario 64 II"? (Strangely enough, Reggie Fils-Amie refers to SMG as being SM64's true sequel. Interesting..) Caleb
Sean Kelly The thing with a mailbag backlog is that sometimes we don't answer the question until AFTER the release date.

I don't own a Wii at the moment, but I played a level of Super Mario Galaxy last week during a Nintendo Mall Tour. I quite enjoyed it.

No comment on the name guessing thing.

Kyle Orland I don't think it's going to be any good. I think it IS excellent! I couldn't put it down the weekend I got it, getting 60 stars in a couple of days and 120 in a matter of weeks (Some of those last ones are T-U-F tough). The best Mario game since 64 ... I highly recommend it.

And Jay is just a genius. And psychic.

Jay Resop I have not yet seen Super Mario Galaxy, so I should probably not have any opinions of it yet. But I do have an opinion of it. My opinion is: I'm not sure.

As for the second question...wow. That's freaky. Although I'm not sure what I'm more disturbed over: the fact that I was able to predict the future Mario game (even though it is a rather predictable title) or the fact that you REMEMBERED that I predicted the name of Super Mario Galaxy. I should sue Nintendo.-jay

PenguinMan I've seen people play it, and if it weren't for finals, I'd be ALL OVER THAT because it looks incredibly fun.

GameGuru (holds up a copy of Super Mario Galaxy) I don't think, I know!

Anyway, on the rest of the comment... In five or ten years, I expect we will get Super Mario Multiverse, where Mario has to team up with Cartoon Mario, Movie Mario, and Paper Mario against the Crisis of Infinite Bowsers! This, of course, is the reason for the cliffhanger at the end of the Super Mario Bros. Film.

Super Toad I think Jay needs to go for James Randi's Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge. Then give me half of the prize for suggesting it

PeachFan Well, I haven't had the chance to play it yet, but it looks pretty good. (Darn Wii games costing too much when they first come out...)

Crazyswordsman Caleb again? Wow. I think we should give this guy the fan award.

1. The stores never have Wiis ever! I'm like cursed. Every time I try to buy a Wii, I can't! Anyway, I'm hoping SMG will be awesome. Wait...is Luigi in the game? He BETTER be...

2. Hey, Jay, you should sue Nintendo because they never gave you any credit at all. -CSM

Found your site and want one of the Mario ornaments I saw-how to order-where to get??? Please respond ASAP!!!! hanks

Patti C.

Sean Kelly Another problem with the mailbag backlog is that we get a lot of seasonal questions that I end up throwing into the mailbag for filler. For the answer to this, refer to question 1.

Kyle Orland Er, see question 1 above?

Jay Resop Wow, another request for those ornaments. I won't repeat my whole schpeal about T'all Kinet Komwuttulazani again. He's currently working on the ornament request for the last guy. Ask again in fifteen years.-jay

PenguinMan Sean, why do you do this to me. I could be studying right now, but nooooooooo, I have to answer questions in a painfully humorous fashion. If I fail any of my classes, it'll be YOUR HEAD. Or your arm. Or your big toe. Or your spleen. Whatever, I'm not picky.

GameGuru See Question 1, quid pro quo.

Super Toad Hm, lots of interest in these ornaments... Forget my previous advice. I've bought all the good ornaments myself and opened Supertoad's Overpriced Ornament Shop. I'm accepting orders starting at twice the market value.

PeachFan Same answer as above- Go to Gamestop/EB Games.

Crazyswordsman (see image from question 1)

My son is interested in the Mario Brothers Theme Song sheet music for piano. Is it available? How do I get a copy?

Thank you, Dawn Reagan

Sean Kelly I would think that the Super Mario Bros theme is something you can easily learn by ear. Then again, I'm not that musically inclined.

Kyle Orland Google is a friend to us all: Site link: http://individual.utoronto.ca/auyeun/vgsheetmusic.html Overworld theme direct link (PDF): http://individual.utoronto.ca/auyeun/Mario.pdf

Jay Resop Ok, I'm tired. I'm done answering questions for the day. I'm going to turn things over to my good friend and pal, Dr. Donez! Good night, gals and germs!-jay

Dr. Donez Grumble... Friend and pal my...hello kids! Your friendly neighborhood Donez is here to answer your questions. Let's see what we have here first... sheet music... sheet music... Ah, here we go! Oh wait, this is sheet music for a harpsichord... Curse you, harpsichord!!! I'll see you in hell!!!!!

PenguinMan Honestly, I'd like to know myself.

GameGuru Use the Google.

Super Toad Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do. It sounds perfect when I hum it. If that doesn’t work, you can try this: http://feedonfeeds.com/minutillo.com/steve/weblog/images/mario-sheet-music.jpg

PeachFan I'm honestly not sure if it's available. If it is, I have no clue where to find it.

Crazyswordsman It's easy to write your own sheet music. I'm a musician. I do it all the time. It's fun. He should make an arrangement of video game songs for the piano and record them and put them on OC Remix or something.

Hello SMBHQ Mailbag crew! I was wondering, what kind of scores do you think Super Mario Galaxy will get on gaming sites like Gamespot and IGN?

SuperMarioMan

Sean Kelly Currect tally: Christmas Ornament Questions: 2
Super Mario Galaxy Questions: 2

Who will end up on top? Read the rest of the mailbag to find out!

Kyle Orland Personally, I think it'll average about a 97.4% and become the second-highest rated game of all time on GameRankings, just behind Ocarina of Time.

Oh, hey, look at that!

By the by, I think it deserves all the praise and more.

Dr. Donez I'm not sure what kind of score Super Mario Galaxy will have, but I hope and pray that the score isn't played with a harpsichord. DAMN YOU, HARPSICHORD!!!

PenguinMan I could make a crack about the integrity of the game review sites in question, but it's easier than stomping goombas, yet oddly enough, harder than making a Mario-related metaphor.

GameGuru You can tell we've been holding onto these questions for a while, but quite frankly, I expected it to get 9/10 or more, and it did.

Super Toad This is just a prediction, but 9.5 and 9.7 out of 10.

PeachFan OVER 9000!!!!

Hahah, just kidding. I dunno what kind of score it'll get, haven't had the chance to play it yet.

Crazyswordsman It depends whether or not Luigi and/or Bowser Jr. are in the game. Luigi will give it more points and Bowser Jr. will take points away. -CSM

I am a Special Ed technition in Utah and I have a young 5th grade student who wants to know what made Boozer evil??? I'm not sure if I'm spelling the name right but if you know please get back to me. He's a real cute kid and I would love to let him know : )

Susan Hicken

Sean Kelly I hope you mean Bowser, because a character named "Boozer" shouldn't be in a kids game.

Kyle Orland That's a... surprisingly good question. Well, the cut scenes in Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy seem to show he's a bit jealous of Mario's relationship with the Princess, and his desire to be with her leads him to attack all that is nice and good. That's as good an explanation as any, I think.

Dr. Donez I'm not sure, but I bet that a harpsichord is behind it.

PenguinMan Boozer? Sounds like he's only evil when he's drunk, which seems to be rather often. I guess fire flower liqour is pretty potent stuff.

GameGuru I'll assume you mean Bowser... It's the love of a woman. Bowser loves Peach, but Peach loves Mario more, and we see the games from Mario and Peach's view... If we saw the games from Bowser's point of view, Mario looks like the bad guy for denying his one true love from him, and keeping his eight some-odd children from having a mother figure. Remember, Mario kept Donkey Kong locked up in a cage and away from his son in Donkey Kong Jr, so it's not out of character.

Super Toad Bowser was normal as a child. His decent into evil began one fateful day when some stranger called his father a boozer for no reason, and he became so enraged he savagely beat his child.

PeachFan Boozer? Is he Bowser's alcoholic cousin?

Crazyswordsman Booze made Boozer evil. He started drinking and didn't stop. The lesson of this story that you should teach your kid? Binge drinking is bad. Very bad. -CSM

(oh, and some guy named Kamek probably got him the Booze)

I have a question about Mario. His hair color in most games is a light brown or brown. His mustache and eyebrows are a deep brown or black. Do you have an idea why it's like that?

Marissa Kinzel

Sean Kelly That was a case for Super Mario Mysteries.

Speaking of Mysteries, I should take a moment to explain its current hiatus.

Essentially, when I brought Mysteries back in April, the submissions were posted unfiltered and I had to halt them due to questionable content being posted. I'm looking into coding some sort of system, where I have to OK a submission before its posted. However, since I'm busy with the rest of the site, I haven't had time.

Hopefully Mysteries will be back up and running sometime next year.

Kyle Orland He uses Just for Men.

Seriously, the history of this is more about technical limitations than anything. Both mustache and hair were bluish in Donkey Kong, owing to the black background and limited color palette. By Super Mario Bros. they had both turned brown, to match his shoes, I guess (why use a new color when they are so limited). Then in SMB3 they were both black. It's not until Super Mario 64 that the now-standard brown hair/black mustache is really standardized for the games.

So, my best guess here is that the dark mustache was used to give Mario a more defined mouth early on, and that in those early games, a similar color was used for the hair because of technical limitations (and because you could barely see the hair under the hat in the early games) by SM64 (where Mario could go hatless for the first time) they realized that black hair looked awful, and that he'd been shown with brown hair in plenty of artwork, and they couldn't really change the trademark mustache color at this point, and they finally had the technical power for a new hair color, so they made a change.

Was that clear?

Dr. Donez Haven't you been paying attention!?!? This is all a part of the Great Harpsichord Conspiracy! (GHC) No one is safe from their harpiness and chordiness. Run! Run, my friends! For you can not hide its magical and seductive melody!

PenguinMan To make people bother us with annoying questions.

GameGuru Mario dyes his hair light brown. Next question!

Super Toad I've done some research. In the following games Mario’s hair and mustache color are… DK: Same color
MB: Same color
SMB: Same color
SMB2: Same color
SMB3: Same color
SMW: Same color
SMRPG: Different color?!
After SMRPG: Different color

Obviously Nintendo went insane when it stopped making 2D Mario games.

PeachFan Might be just the way it grows. Besides, it's from a video game. Mario's hair and mustache can be a different color if they want to be.

Crazyswordsman Because Pauline was never attracted to blonde haired men. Neither was Peach. Mario had to change his hair color. Luigi's hair was already that color, but Mario had to steal the spotlight again. -CSM

Hi............I was wondering if you can help. My son is desparately looking for a super mario christmas ornament (nintendo) do you know where I can look? He is a hugh fan...... I have been looking everywhere, I would so appreciate any help you can give me. thank you so much for your time.
debbie
Sean Kelly And the winner is Christmas Ornaments with 3 questions! Merry Christmas everyone! Also, have a Happy Chanukah (to those Jewish readers), a great Winter solstice (for the Pagans), a fun Winter's Veil (for World of Warcraft players), and whatever else you celebrate at this time of year.

Kyle Orland See question 1 above.

Dr. Donez Hey! You're in luck! I just happen to be a maker, creator, designer, and producer of Mario ornaments! However, some punk jerk named Tall Kennith Kom-whats-his-face is constantly breaking into my lab and stealing them from me! DAMN YOU, HARPSICHORD!!!!!

PenguinMan Sean, I know you said this was supposed to be the "Holiday Mailbag", so where's are the Hanukkah- or Kwanzaa-related questions, or do you not care about people who celebrate those "other" holidays? Don't you think THREE questions about Christmas ornaments are enough? I think I smell a conspiracy here... First it's this mailbag, under the pretenses of continuing equality, then they've gone right back to calling the "Winter Break" in schools the "Christmas Break" like it was in the "Dark Ages". Apparently, the increased use of apostrophes is ALSO part of you conspiracy, but I'll have no more of it! As of this point I will stop using, apostrophies, quote marks, semicolons, or even commas. YOU DONT OWN ME SEAN DO YOU HEAR ME? FIGHT THE POWER!

GameGuru (has gotten a package) Hmm... What's this? (opens up the package) Oh, snap! I got my DVD set! "Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3: The Complete Series!" Gotta run! (runs off to watch AoSMB3)

Super Toad Sorry, Supertoad's Overpriced Ornament Shop is sold out (and I blew all the profits on a giant throne made of SMB3 carts).

PeachFan Oh good lord. I'm not saying it again.

Crazyswordsman (see image in question 1...AGAIN...)
