SMBHQ MAILBAG

FOR THE DATE OF
August 1, 2007

Hi, everyone. This is a question for Kyle Orland. Was that you I saw on G4's coverage of E3 '07 or was it a different Kyle Orland? Thanks.

Caleb

Sean Kelly Yeah, that was Kyle doing his day job.

BTW, I was looking for the video on YouTube, when I found this:

Kyle Orland Yup, that was me. I was covering the show for Joystiq and G4 asked me to be on a couple of times as well. For those of you who missed it, you can find links to the videos, as well as the rest of my non-SMBHQ work, on my workblog

Which reminds me, check out my impressions of the Super Mario Galaxy demo from the show: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/joystiq-impressions-super-mario-galaxy/

Jay Resop Helloooooooooooooooooooooooo Nurse! Sorry everyone for missing the last mailbag. I know you all missed me. But I'm back now! For a good, wholesome, all-american mailbag that is just full of family fun.

You pose a very insightful question, my dear Caleb. That actually was not Kyle Orland you saw at E3. It was in fact his evil twin brother, who just also happens to be named Kyle Orland.

At least, I think he's the evil twin. I can never remember.-jay

PenguinMan An illustrious celebrity like Kyle Orland is certain to have a swarm of impostors claiming to be him. There's roughly a 25% percent chance that it was actually him that you saw.

MetalMan I may not be Kyle Orland, but I'm pretty sure that's him. He was doing it for some site named Joystiq or something.

Yeah. No free passes to us SMBHQ people. Bummer, man.

Super Toad I don't watch G4 but it was probably him. Unless of course someone killed Kyle, made his skin into a full body suit, and stole his identity.

PeachFan I think it might have been our Kyle. Not sure.
Crazyswordsman Hey Caleb, my buddy, what's up? We missed you. Yep, it's our very own Kyle that's at E3, if you can believe it. We've been hampering him for tickets, but we haven't gotten them yet. And we probably never will. -CSM

I am not rich to buy wii, and those other things. Why can't you make a mairo game up for playsation 2 . That is my question ? Please call me back at I just what to know why you did not EVER make a playstaion 2 mario game?????????

sdstanley

Sean Kelly That there is the problem between first and third party games. People see how most games are released on every system and is confused why other games only appear on one system. We really need on super system so everyone can be happy.

Kyle Orland Well, we can't make one because we're not Nintendo. And Nintendo can't make one for the PS2 because they're not Sony. If you;re too poor for a Wii, how about a Gamecube or an N64? They have some decent Mario games that won't dent your piggy bank too much.

Jay Resop "Is that my question?" I'm not sure, is it? And I'd love to call you back, but that would be creepy.-jay

PenguinMan orry, the e-mail you have dialed has been disconnected. Please call your internet provider and cancel your internet service to rectify this problem. Thank you.

MetalMan ...Why would Nintendo make a game for their rival? Sony is a rival game console maker, they make the PS2, not Nintendo. If Nintendo made a game for the PS2, it'd harm them, as Nintendo needs people to buy their consoles to survive. Furthermore, you can buy older Nintendo consoles if the new ones are too expensive.

Although I am slightly flattered that you mistook us for Nintendo itself.

Super Toad Because Sony employees eat babies at their Christmas parties and we're against that.

PeachFan Why didn't I EVER make a PS2 Mario game? Maybe because I'm not a programmer, I'm just a gamer. And Mario belongs on Nintendo systems, not anywhere else.
Crazyswordsman Jay is the master of playing Mario games on the PS2. Maybe you can burn a Mario game onto a PS2 disk, but you'd have to be tech saavy to do that. And I'm not tech saavy. -CSM

will there ever be any Mario consorts in Glasgow or in Edinburgh johnbhoy
Sean Kelly Do you mean concerts? And if so, are you confusing us with the hip-hop Mario?

Kyle Orland Consorts? CONSORTS? (runs to dictionary). OK, the citonary didn't help. Do you mean concerts maybe? Either way, I'm afraid I have no idea.

Jay Resop Dude! I was just at a Mario concert in Glasgow just last week! That thing was rock'n! The chick who played Princess Peach on the bass was hot! It was so wild, man! You mean you missed it??? Bummer!-jay

PenguinMan I was going to make fun of your typo, but apparently 'consort' is an older term to describe a musical performance. You win this round, Johnny Bhoy.

MetalMan The nature of this question is vague. Consort can mean some very weird things, especially in relationship with Mario...

So... no consorts here, nope.

Super Toad Definition of con·sort /n. ?k?ns?rt, v. k?n?s?rt/ [n. kon-sawrt, v. kuhn-sawrt] –noun
1. a husband or wife; spouse, esp. of a reigning monarch. Compare prince consort, queen consort.
2. one vessel or ship accompanying another.

Of course you may have a king named Mario or a ship called Mario accompanying another ship there. Good luck seeking them out!

PeachFan Consorts? Would you mean concerts? If so, I have no clue. I want one in America, like the Mario and Zelda Big Band concert that I have on CD. I would LOVE to see that live. I'd even go in costume. :D
Crazyswordsman Well, Johnny, try going to the sites of some of the concerts and see if they have any upcoming dates. If not, I'm sure there's a way to request it. Now about those "consorts," I don't know. -CSM

Dear Smbhq, do you guys have a banner link? And if so, I would like to make you a link on my site. So if it wouldn't be much troube, please provide one. Thank you.

-oldschoolgamer

Sean Kelly If you clicked the linked marked "About SMBHQ" on the main page, you would have found what you are looking for.

Kyle Orland We do have a banner I made near on ten years ago at http://smbhq.com/banner.gif. Sean might be able to tell you if we have an updated one.

Jay Resop We at SMBHQ do not believe in banner links. We feel that they are unwholesome and corrupt the mortal soul. Cursed are those that use the unholy being that is the banner link. Oldschoolgamer! Resist the temptation of the banner link! Walk into the light! For the love of Kyle Orland's evil twin brother, WALK INTO THE LIGHT!!!-jay

PenguinMan We are very busy people, so you have to go through the right division. Unfortunately, ours only handles requests to make Mario games on non-Nintendo systems and where to buy out-of-production merchandice.

MetalMan I'll let Sean link to that, but yes we do. Thanks for the idea to link us, heh.

Super Toad I don't know about a banner, but there's a button on the links page.

Editor's Note: Not anymore.

PeachFan There's banners around here somewhere. I know I made one for a contest a few years ago, but it didn't win. :\
Crazyswordsman You, oldschoolgamer, are a GOD. Because all oldschoolgamers are. But yeah, there's a few buttons at http://www.smbhq.com/aboutsmbhq.html so try it out! -CSM

I've heard that their is a Mario Beer mug??? If their is, could you show a pic? Thanx. -MarioObssesed
Sean Kelly They probably did make a mug, but I doubt it would have been for beer.

Kyle Orland If there is, this is the first I've heard of it. A quick google search doesn't pop up anything of relevance, though I didn't dig too hard. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, though. Keep hope alive!

Jay Resop I'm sorry, but SMBHQ is a wholesome, all-american, family site. Because of this, we will not endorse any alcoholic beverage, nor will we endorse any material container that could be used for storing, dispensing, or consuming any alcoholic beverage. Although, you know that big Mario Concert in Glasgow last week? Let's just say that there was much consumption of alcohol in Mario beer mugs.-jay

PenguinMan I know they're called Mario Parties, but I don't think that alcohol is ever involved.

MetalMan Let's see... Mario beer mug... nope. Can't find one. I found a Nintendo one, though. It's not beer-specific, though.

Super Toad Ever heard of Google Images? http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/mania/images/merchandise/mug_smb2.jpg

PeachFan Hahahah, my friend Mikey out in California has one! He drinks iced tea out of it. I got to drink out of it once. That thing totally kicks the butt of my Garfield mugs. XD
Crazyswordsman Have you been playing too much Chrono Alcoholism? -CSM

Hey smbhq do you guys know when Super Mario Galaxy is supposed to come out I went to Wikipedia and it said November 19 for the US but Game informer told me it would come out July 1st Do you guys know the definate date or like the month its supposed to be realeased something like that. its supposed to come out some time this year though right? Nintendo Power confirmed it. Oh and if you didnt know already theres a game they are making called Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games and like Mario and his gang faces off Sonic and his gang in The olympic games at Belging. it should be cool
-Mr Nintendo
Sean Kelly I believe that release date is correct. Don't talk to me about the 2008 Olympics (it should've been in Toronto!)

Kyle Orland November 19. Nintendo announced this at their E3 press conference, so it's pretty official. And yes, we did know of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games. We even mentioned it in our news section.

Jay Resop Um...if you are Mr. Nintendo, shouldn't you already know the release date? And if it was to be released on July 1st...shouldn't it already be out? You mean, it is already released!?!? Wow! I need to go get my copy.

As for Mario and Sonic at the Olympics...I think I'm kind of scared of the idea of "Mario's gang" and "Sonic's game" squaring off. It sounds like a bad remake of the West Side Story. Wait... Mario... Maria... *Shudders*-jay

PenguinMan When I read this letter I read it in the voice of a hyperactive schoolkid and it was incredibly funny.

MetalMan Sorry, I don't know myself. I don't really keep track--I usually buy them after they're released.

Super Toad Everything on Wikipedia is true. Do not question it.

PeachFan All I know about Mario Galaxy is that it's supposed to come out eventually. And I heard about the Olympics game! That's going to be awesome.
Crazyswordsman Well, it's not July 1st anymore, so it's probably the later date. Gamespot says it's due out in November. And yeah, I've heard about the Mario and Sonic thing. Sounds like fanservice to me for all those people who grew up with the Mario/Sonic rivalry. -CSM

There are too many mailbag answerers. I say you get rid of all of them except Super Toad and Peach Fan. And maybe Kyle. Definitely don't keep Jay, though. "Big O" Face
Sean Kelly We have a lot of responders, so we are not biased towards a single point of view.

Kyle Orland Well at least I made the maybes.

Jay Resop What??? Get rid of Jay??? But... But... How could you say such a thing? How could you say such a hurtful, terrible thing? Don't you like me??? What have I ever done to you? I try and try so hard to make people laugh in this mailbag... And this is the thanks I get??? I... I... I don't think I can go on now... That e-mail just wounded me to the very core of my inner being... Nobody likes me... Everybody hates me... Guess I'll go eat worms...

No! I shall not let you defeat me, simple mailbag sender person! My will is strong and pure! My soul is powerful and loving! I will not allow you do get me down! So I'm asking everyone who is reading this mailbag: Send in your love of Jay to the SMBHQ Mailbag at smbhqmail@gmail.com! Your petition will keep the dream alive! I believe in you! Now I ask that all of you believe in me! Now, everyone, chant with me! We. Love. Jay! We. Love. Jay! I can't hear you in Wisconsin! We. Love. Jay! Everyone! We. Love. Jay! Come on, Sean, I can't hear you! We. Love. Jay! We. Love. Jay!

Wow... You guys are great. Sorry... I need a moment... I'm a little emotional right now...-jay

PenguinMan Ok, I don't know WHERE to start with this, but I'm just going to say that you're a massive idiot. I don't think I've EVER outright told anyone they were an idiot in this mailbag gig, so yeah, you're the first. CONGRATURATIONS! YOU LOSE!

MetalMan This is definitely a trolling question, so I'll let some other people answer it.

But for the record--Who's Super Toad??? He better not be Zip Toad... he still owes me grocery money. That bum.

Super Toad I like this guy.

PeachFan FINALLY! Someone gives me attention! I have a fan! I feel popular now! XD Someone besides my friends actually reads my responses, and thinks I'm worthy of being kept on the mailbag! Oh, this made my day! XD
Crazyswordsman You take that girl from Logistics out to dinner yet? Because she came up and told me she likes you. But that question makes me very sad. So therefore, you get eaten by a Grue.

YOU HAVE DIED.

Would you like to:
-Restart
-Restore
-Quit

And thank you for playing Zork: The Great Underground Empire! -CSM

HI,
I'M TRYING TO UPDATE MY GAME SYSTEM .I SOLD MY ATARI 2600 AND NOW HAVE A PS2.DOES THE ORIGINAL MARIO BROS HAVE A COUNTERPART ON EITHER PS1 OR PS2? IF NOT IS THERE A WINDOWS XP VERSION OR AN ONLINE GAME OF IT AVAILABLE?
PP
USA
Sean Kelly THE ORIGINAL MARIO BROS IS VERY HARD TO FIND THESE DAYS. I REMEMBER MARIO VGA QUITE A WHILE AGO, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD IT ANYWHERE.

Kyle Orland You jumped from the Atari 2600 to the PS2? Wow, talk about a generation gap. Anyway, for the umpteenth time, NO, there are no Mario games for the PlayStation or PS2. Emulated versions can be downloaded for Windows, but don't expect us to help you with those.

Jay Resop Wow...good job, updating your system from an Atari to a Playstation. That's quite a leap there. Don't get whiplash.

What's the deal with all of these people trying to play Mario on Playstation. Go shell out some money and buy a Nintendo system, you bums. Gamecubes cost, like, 50 bucks now.-jay

PenguinMan And I read THIS question like someone was yelling at me. Now I feel incredibly uncomfortable and wish to end relations with this person as soon as possible.

MetalMan NO, THERE IS NO ONLINE COUNTERPART, NO WINDOWS GAME (THAT YOU'D WANT TO PLAY) AND THERE IS DEFINITELY NO PS2, PS1, OR ATARI 2-- WAIT, THERE IS AN ATARI MARIO GAME SOMEWHERE THERE, IT IS CALLED MARIO BROS.

YOU SHOULD GET A WII OR N64 OR EVEN A GAMECUBE IF YOU WANT MODERN MARIO GAMES. OR PERHAPS A DS OR GBA. SORRY TO SOUND LIKE A SALES MACHINE, BUT YOU CAN'T GET REAL MARIO GAMES ON SYSTEMS NINTENDO DOESN'T EITHER MAKE OR WOULD STAND TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF.

Super Toad If by Mario Bros you mean the original arcade game in the sewer you should be able to easily find it online. Then again, judging by the way you write in all caps it might not be so easy for you.

PeachFan Uhh... if you want a Mario game on your PC, try Mario Teaches Typing. It's lame, though. Just go buy a Wii or a DS. Seriously. Why do people keep asking if Nintendo makes games for Sony systems? And holy crap, just now updating from an Atari 2600? I got rid of mine when I was 12! (And I'm 25 now.)
Crazyswordsman HI. NO THE PLAYSTATIONS ARE NOT NINTENDO SYSTEMS AND THERE ARE NO MARIO GAMES ON NON-NINTENDO SYSTEMS. AND NO THERE'S NO WINDOWS GAMES UNLESS YOU CONSIDER ROMS. MY BEST ADVICE WOULD BE FOR YOU TO GET A WII AND DOWNLOAD GAMES OFF THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE. -CSM

To The Execurives at Mario Brothers Headquarters..

My son is a prmising young teenager with an abundance amount of creative talent and innovative Idea's ..since he was 3 years old he has come up with inventions that are already on the market unbenonced to him..

Just recently he has come up with an idea related to the Maroio Brothers that could literly be worth Bllions of Dollars..

We are in the process of doing the patten for his idea.. if interested please respond..

Although a signed letter of Disclosure will be necessary before revealing his Innovative Idea.. you wont regreat this beleive me!

If I have contacted the wrong office by mistake please advise me of whom I should be speaking.

Thank you for your immediate time and attention to this mater.. time is of the essence.

Sincerely,
Ms Saundra Revere

Sean Kelly Sorry to burst your bubble, but Nintendo can't legally use your idea.

Kyle Orland Wow, where to start. First of all, any billion dollar idea involving Mario would probably be of great interest to Nintendo, as they're the ones that own Mario and all related merchandise. Heck, they could shut down this site if they really wanted to, and we don't make nearly billions of dollars.

Second of all, you should really run a spell check if you want people to take your billion dollar ideas seriously.

Jay Resop Ok, I'm sold. Here's my money.

Pft, it wasn't until your son was 3 when he became super smart? Pft, I was inventing stuff since was 2 years old.

Any guesses on what the amasing idea is? Although I should say, if you're trying to patent the idea of a "Super Mario Bros.", you might have a hard time.-jay

PenguinMan I... I... I... I have NO WORDS. Inconceivable. I had no idea we had access to this kind of money! Hey Sean, hurry up and listen to the nice lady. Be sure to give me my fair share once we've finished raking in the billions of NINTENDO FUN-MONEY.

MetalMan Uh.... what would you want us to do with this 'Billion Dollar Idea"? I mean... even if we were Nintendo, they don't just take free ideas. Unless it's something so good that it's obviously moneymaking from the start. But since when does that happen?

I am an old teenager. Where are my billions of money? Nowhere. I think one is better off with a college education than trying to reach for the sun... you ever read the story of Icarus? Anyway...

It's nice to see you have spirit, but I'd suggest you either A. Patent this idea (If it's really so good, and not specifically Mario related), B. Send this to Nintendo (I can't speak for them), or C: Focus on something else?

Super Toad No, you haven't reached the wrong office. Please send the Billion Dollar Idea right here. You won't "regreat" it!

PeachFan Uh, you're emailing the wrong place. We deal in Mario Brothers, not Maroio Brothers. I dunno who those Maroio guys are... probably impostors. Or Koopas in disguise.
Crazyswordsman Dear Ms. Saundra Revere,

Thank you for your inquiry to the Super Mario Brothers Head Quarters, America's number one source for Koopa Kid jokes. It is in our best interest to serve all our customers with the highest quality Mario-related information there is to know. As such, we take all of our inquiries very seriously, and we would love nothing more than to see your son's idea sprung into action.

Unfortunately, we are not Nintendo, nor are we affiliated with Nintendo, although they have given us an official nod in a magazine called "Nintendo Power." If your son wants to do something Mario-related, you ought to contact Nintendo's copyright office to get a license to use their characters. And unfortunately they don't listen to people often. And unfortunately I doubt you could claim fair use if you intend to profit off of them. But I still say anything is worth a shot. Could you please inform us what this is so we can make a reccomendation?

Thank you, Ms. Saundra Revere, and we hope your son becomes a success. If you have any questions please email us.

Sincerely yours, Sir Crazyswordsman... WITH SAVINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -CSM

Hi everyone! I had an idea for a really funny edit, where the roles were reversed; meaning Jay and PenguinMan were the only sane mailbag answers, while everyone else posted in a unique but insane way. So, after rewriting one of your old mailbags in Word, and pasting it in Paint, I now have this:

Also, I've started a new site that will be covering everything about the new game Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I have it updated with all the important info released so far, and I plan to update it whenever the official site releases new facts or screenshots (which as of now is happening every weekday). Here's a link: http://www.freewebs.com/zarkanssmashbrothersworld/

But, I know that if I don't want to drive Jay crazy (:P), I'll have to ask a question, so here it is: Have any of you every watched the old Donkey Kong Country cartoon released in the 90's? If so, what did you think of it? Personally, I once watched a longer movie version of it called Donkey Kong and the Crystal Coconut a long time ago. Now that I look back, it was okay, but a bit weird (especially some of the character models: Candy Kong a hippie, Funky Kong an Orangutan?). I know that this isn't directly Mario related, but hey, Donkey Kong's a major Mario character, isn't he? ;) Daniel C.

Sean Kelly 1. You have WAAAAAAY too much time on your hands.

2. As for the site, I've seen worse.

3. I remember watching Teletoon all day just to watch the show only to be underwhelmed (dumbest thing? Pronouncing K. Rool k'rool)

Kyle Orland Wow, a Word file as a PNG. Ever heard of "Save as HTML"?

Your Smash Bros site isn';t bad for one just starting out, but take that MIDI music off the front page. I hate sites that use background music.

I think I watched half an episode of the DKC cartoon some Sunday morning while flipping the channels. My brain still has not fully recovered.

Jay Resop I don't know what you're talking about. All of my answers are serious.

And you're right. Your e-mail was too long for me to bother reading the rest, so I never bothered to read your question. Anyway, that's all for now! Happy 10th birthday, SMBHQ! See you all in Toledo, for the next Mario Concert!-jay

PenguinMan Good show, my man. I will even partially ignore your lame but well-intentioned effort to inform people of updates on the new Smash Bros website, in case they are unable to type in URLs shorter than 18 characters. Certainly you have a bright future in Hollywood or Sioux Falls as a writer or possibly a "Key Grip", whatever those are. Probably just there to jack up the production values. PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE WHY I HAVE TO PAY $14 WHENEVER I WANT TO SEE SURF'S UP ARGH GO EAT SOME MODERATELY ODIOUS CHEESE YOU TWIT

MetalMan Ah, a long list of duds with only a few good ones. At least this one is entertaining.

First, kudos on the insane edit. I get all the good ones, heh. I wonder what Sean thought of how you portrayed him... sometimes he seems like that to me too (just kidding...:p).

I saw that Crystal Coconut thing. The animation was weird, and something about singing and Donkey Kong never mixed with me... call me crazy, but wasn't it about hitting stuff with barrels?

Interesting site, but it seems like you may have slacked off a bit. SSB:B information comes out so fast we won't even touch it until it's semi-finished... or at least, I think so. Then again, we have 1996 in the 21st century, so we may have to destroy another calendar to fit that into the site. :p

Also, I want a picture of Kyle's reaction to being portrayed as a Mario hater.

Super Toad What is with that giant image? Did Plain Text kill your brother or something?

PeachFan Okay, to your parody? My head hurts at reading my own responses. Seriously, I don't even use that much netspeak in a year, let alone a set of replies. Gah. (I do admit to overusing smilies, though.)

Okay, off to go waste an evening playing Cooking Mama.

Crazyswordsman 1. Are you saying I'm too sane? WHAT! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! FURY!!!!!!! (I really oughta take a look at that)

2. I wish I had enough time to look at your website before this email connection times out on me.

3. Yeah I've seen that show. It wasn't given much publicity, but it was pretty cool. I always loved Donkey Kong. Too bad Rare turned traitor. -CSM
