SMBHQ MAILBAG

FOR THE DATE OF
May 14, 2007

All the guest responders return for the SUPER MAILBAG, a mailbag so big that Jay and Supertoad got lost in the shuffle.

newscast claiming opposite of what your site says (about mario brothers last name).

worth a look.

nathan

Sean Kelly The last name thing is the least interesting part of that video. I was too busy looking the size of the mullet of that game councillor, realizing Howard Philips was a real person (and not just a character is Nester comics), and the, pre-Jack Thomson, comment that video games bring out the best in us.

Kyle Orland Hey, It's Bill O'reilly! The no-spin zone!

After doing a bit of research, it seems the Mario surname may have originated in the SMB Super Show, not in an interview with Miyamoto as I originally thought. Regardless, I'm not sure Bill White circa 1988 is the authoirty on this matter. WE're looking into it and we'll update as warranted.

PenguinMan I could take a look, but that would require effort on my part. Sorry, pal.

MetalMan This was rather early in the day, so far as I know the Mario Bros. connection was originally confirmed by Shigeru Myamoto himself, and he isn't even in that video.

PeachFan Very interesting interview! And you know, I always wondered about the "Mario Mario and Luigi Mario" thing. The no-last-name thing makes a lot more sense. (Oh, and I love the mullet on the guy who's talking about the Hammer Brothers towards the end of the video.)

Crazyswordsman Somehow I think this was made before the (crappy) SMB movie, which was done in 1993. Now I don't consider the movie to be canon, but in the movie they were Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. So yeah. In conclusion, don't watch the SMB movie. -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 There's two reasons for that. One, that is from 1988. Two, no one knew much about Mario back then.

GameGuru Super Mailbag? More like the YouTube Mailbag! Ok, the games themselves don't say one way or another. Their names being Mario Mario and Luigi Mario are from the comics, cartoons, and movies, and it is widely considered part of the Expanded Mario Canon if not the in-game canon, and it is also considered fanon, which means more fans would complain if we didn't list their full names as Mario Mario & Luigi Mario, then would about them having no last names.

Gage This has been covered before. I think this question was on Dethrone the Mushroom King? Somewhere on this site anyway.

Are the locations in "Super Mario 64" different areas across the Mushroom Kingdom, or just made up of a world Bowser created using the power stars?
Caleb
Sean Kelly They're worlds inside of paintings.

Kyle Orland My understanding is they're paintings in Peach's castle brought to life. So Peach's castle is in the Muchroom Kingdom, and the painting are in the castle, and the levels are in the paintings. Does that help.

PenguinMan They're actually made up of locations from the Moorhsum Kingdom, the Mushroom Kindgom's evil twin. That's why pretty much everything there is trying to kill Mario.

MetalMan Unfortunately, the games rarely specify these sorts of things. Considering their overtly elemental natures and the fact we haven't seen them again, though, I would probably agree they were created by the paintings coming to life/possibly with the stars involved.

PeachFan I think it's a bunch of worlds Bowser made with the Power Stars. Of course, that's just my opinion. For all I know, Princess Peach really does rule over a world with giant Goombas, and another one with Dorrie the sea monster.

Crazyswordsman They're just made-up worlds inside paintings. The Mushroom Kingdom, which is really a part of the Mushroom World was explored in whole in SMB3 and later in SMRPG. I mean, the whole game takes place inside Toadstool's castle, no? -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 Wikipedia says they're portals to other realms, so I'm going with that.

GameGuru I believe they are just painting worlds, so... yes, more likely to be worlds made up by Bowser, than actual spots in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Gage I don't know to be honest. But seeing how the game does center around Princess Peach's castle which IS in the Mushroom Kingdom I would have to say yes, they are worlds across the Mushroom Kingdom.

Hi whoever this is going to.

My name is Michael and I was just wondering, how do I become a member on the site like this Sean Person? Is he a member or staff? Anyway that's all.

Bye!
Michael

Sean Kelly Am I a member of the staff???? For your information, I am the longest running staff member not named Kyle or Jay.

Kyle Orland A member? Um, PayPal a $10 membership fee to kyle.orland@gmail.com and we'll get your membership processed post haste.
Editor's Note: SMBHQ takes no responsiblity if people decides to take this answer seriously.

PenguinMan Well, first of all, you have to move INTO the Internet. From what I understand it's a pretty painful process, but Sean lost all feeling in his body due to an unfortunate accident involving rodeo clowns, so it was no sweat for him. Next, you must destroy the MCP using only a sprig of parsley while blindfolded. After that, you're in. However, the initiation process requires new inductees to jump on the backs of crocodiles to get across a river, and few have survived that...

MetalMan You must qualify for the position first, and we need a reason to hire you. Basically, you have to know stuff about both Mario and HTML (the language of webpages.) If you do, then send a letter to the right person, and.. well. It isn't up to me. You might have to navigate some mazes and chuck vegetables at people to get the job theseadays, though.

PeachFan Don't ask me. I don't hand out job applications. I just answer the mail. (And play an insane amount of Pokemon.)

Crazyswordsman Sean is the co-webmaster on the site. To get HIS position, well, you're more likely to get struck by lightning. As for the other positions, you have to apply when Sean wants them. You'll have to prove that you're proficient in HTML, Mario knowledge, playing the didgerydoo, and other things. -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 Sean Person? Ohh, I have a feeling Sean won't like this email...

GameGuru While Sean will answer the part of the question directed at him, all you ought to do if you want to become a member of the staff is give massive surport to SMBHQ, perhaps applying for one of the editor positions available.

Gage More or less Sean IS indeed a part of the Staff. I might as well point you to the Staff Members page to get a look. Also, you would have to apply for a task to become a staff member. SMBhq also requests you send in an example of your HTML skills.

Well I have a Mario plush toy that was mentioned in your products page, I got it for $3 on March 11. It's the one made by Applause, it has a really big nose and belly. I have one w/out the hat, I'm trying to find out how much it's worth. On ebay some were going for $25-35 but that didn't make since, I mean it's 18 years old! So do you guys have any idea?

Dustin Parlier

Sean Kelly It's all about supply and demand. If people want your toy, and it's rare, you will get a pretty penny. If not....

Kyle Orland Well, if people are buying it for $25-$35 on eBay then... that's what it's worth. It's worth whatever people are willing to pay, and, apparently, people are willing to pay $25-$35 for an 18 year old plush toy. Wow. I've got to dig mine out of storage...

PenguinMan Hatless Mario? Should I make a joke about him taking more damage when hit or has it been done?

MetalMan Sadly, there is no real 'Blue Book' as far as Mario collectibles go, so I can't exactly answer that question. The best I can think of would be an average of the eBay prices people wind up paying.

PeachFan Ebay is a silly place where sometimes similar things will go for wildly different prices. (I'm still hoping someone decides to sell a Princess Peach cookie jar to replace the one I lost ages ago. If anyone out there has one they'd be willing to sell to me, let me know. It would make me the happiest Peach fan out there.)

Crazyswordsman Well, let's just say you're lucky to have a really rare Mario item! -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 Things going for $35 dollars that are 18 years old is actually pretty rare. I would think the cost would be higher than that. I think eBay's right.

GameGuru The toy is selling on ebay for $25-35, so that is probably how much it is worth to the collector.

Gage No, sorry.

I've created a new game mashup painting video:

Zelda Kong:

Feel free to embed the video if you dig on it

Thanks again for your time,
JW
TheDailyDrawing.com

Sean Kelly Done.

Kyle Orland That's pretty friggin' cool. But how do you draw so fast? Are you the Flash?

PenguinMan How do you dig on something. I could see someone digging THROUGH an object, but not dig on it. However, if you're talking about digg, that's another site entirely.

MetalMan We don't have much bandwidth, heh, but I'm not in charge of embedding things, so, 'meh. It's interesting ,although it could be a little more detailed.
Editor's Note: I don't think we have any problem with bandwidth.

PeachFan That's rather... interesting. ^_^;;

Crazyswordsman Send someone the final copy and they'll put it up in the fanart section. Until we get a section for fan films. This needs to be done. I declare SMBHQ in the need for a fan film section! -CSM
Editor's Note: I can see it now: SMBHQTube!

ChunkyKong12345 Yeah, in the VGF forums someone actually posted that. It's pretty cool. (And so is the Yoshi one you did.)

GameGuru Shouldn't it be like "Ganon Kong"? I mean DK in that pic is in the role of Ganon, and also there is no Pauline as Zelda. I feel gypted.

Gage I've got no say in to the embedding the video onto the website. The people who that is up to are Sean, Jay (not like he's interested heh heh), and Kyle.

How many Mario games are there?

Matt

Sean Kelly More than you know.

Kyle Orland Um, a lot?

It really depends what you consider a "Mario game." There are about a dozen that could be considered in the traditional 2D or 2D platforming mode, a few dozen where you can control Mario, and hundreds if you include appearances of any Mario character in a game.

PenguinMan Not enough.

MetalMan How many grains of sand are there?

How many stars are there?

How many times have we been asked this question?

How many licks are there to the center of a Tootsie pop.

The answer: Nobody cares enough to count these things, so we're sort of stuck with no answer.

PeachFan A million billion jillion. And a half.

Crazyswordsman There are exactly two hundred and five Mario games right now. Don't question it. -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 Around 200-ish.

GameGuru Over 200 games feature Mario... this number includes his various cameos in Nintendo games, and his various Crossovers with the other Nintendo All-Stars, Final Fantasy classes, Pac-Man, and the various SSX Snowboards, and will soon include the crossovers with various Dragon Quest Heroes and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Gage 210? In some games, Mario is not always releated in a big way. In a couple he is only featured. Check out Wikipedia's information on the games here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_games

Hey SMBHQ We know what Super Mario and baby Mario look like. Do u have any Idea what he looks like as a Kid and Teenager? Thanks

-Mr Nintendo

Sean Kelly Pretty much all you have to do is remove Mario's mustache and add pimples. Like so...

Kyle Orland Kid Mario looked a lot like Dennis the Menace, only with more freckles. Teen Mario was a tall and lanky, with just a hint of a mustache and some pretty bad acne.

PenguinMan I don't think ANYONE wants to see what awkward teenaged versions of the Mario characters would look like.

MetalMan We're still working on that. We have spies working around the clock, trying to catch Nintendo's doors unlocked. Then, they climb on the ceiling, sneak into Myamoto's room, and steal his files. Assuming they aren't killed by the mushroom ninjas which guard Nintendo HQ, we should have it within 3.5 days.

In reality, we don't know what he looks like, and we may never know. Maybe you should wait several years and ask again. :p

PeachFan Maybe they look like every other kid/teenager out there, but they're Mario and Luigi. (in other words I don't know, don't ask me, I just answer the mail)

Crazyswordsman I think he looks like the way Jay portrays him in his three part Wario bio. He was probably the fat kid that got picked on at school but nevertheless could jump higher than his weight portrayed him as. Now his much cooler brother Luigi was soooo much cooler looking and was the popular kid in school. Nintendo didn't think cool looking Italian plumbers made good heroes.

ChunkyKong12345 I have a feeling Jay will go into depth with this one. Anyway. Kid Mario would probably look like an lder Baby Mario. You know, with the overalls and shirt and a bit bigger. But Teenager Mario would have tatoos and piercings all over.
Editor's Note: JAY!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU MAN?!?!!?!?!?

GameGuru Not until Super Teen Hearthrob Mario Bros. or whatever comes out, will we know any more than what Baby Mario and Adult Mario look like.

Gage I imagine he would display a similar appearance.

Hello, again. In the Paper Mario, after Mario defeats the Crystal King and goes back to Shiver City to the toad house and goes to bed, when he wakes up there are about 4 mushrooms and a Ultra mushroom lying on the floor. The toad there says he didn't see anyone, and that there seemed to be snow on the floor. Any idea as to how the mushrooms got there? Thanks.
Caleb
Sean Kelly Who knows.

Kyle Orland No idea. Frankly I don't remember that scene too well. Some invisible, penguin-town good samaritan, perhaps?

PenguinMan Spores. That's how mushrooms reproduce, right? I imagine it would work similarly in Mario's universe.

MetalMan Dr. Donez did it! I just know it! You should ask him that.

Oh, yeah. He's dead. Sort of hard to ask him now. Right, Dr. Donez? *Yells at a stuffed doll of Dr. Donez where Dr. Donez should be*

*Doll falls to the side*

Oh no you dih'nt!

*Punches stuffed doll of Dr. Donez and falls through a glass window*

I regret noooothinnnnngggg!!!!!!!

PeachFan I don't know because I haven't had the chance to play Paper Mario yet, in any form. :(

Crazyswordsman WHAT? TWO EMAILS FROM THE SAME PERSON? The whole world is ruined!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!

Well I haven't played Paper Mario. I really should. I hear Luigi's playable in that game. -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 Santa.

GameGuru According to my sources, it's a gift from the two snowmen that Mario retrieved the scarf and bucket for.

Gage No idea.

how do I beat that Wiggler thing (in Super Mario 64) ?

Cynthia Benedict

Sean Kelly Jump on it?

Kyle Orland Jump on its head.

Really.

PenguinMan Hahaha, nice one, Sean. I almost fell for this one, but then I remembered girls don't play video games. Hehehehehe, whoooooooo boy.

MetalMan how do I sent email (in AMD 64) ?

If my faulty, broken knowledge of the Cart I accidentally gave to Blockbuster is right, you... uh... ground pound it?

Maybe... maybe you take the controller and swing it over your head like a lasso.

No, that's wrong. You pick up the controller and yell "DEATH RAY" at it.

Yeah. That's what you do. And if that fails, use fire. The Zelda guy told me to. *Lights controller on fire*

PeachFan Oh god, I used to know how to do this. Maybe you just bounce on it's back part, like you do with every other Wiggler in every other Mario game? I need to go buy Mario 64 on the virtual console and refresh my skills...

Crazyswordsman I think you have to do one of those Z-Stomps on his head. -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 Have you tried jumping on its head?

GameGuru Jump on his head three times. The usual method for dealing with bosses in Koopa's Army.

Gage It's been awhile since I played the game but I always thought you jumped on him... O_o

Currently, a group of people are working on "Super Mario Film" on Hash animation master. It is coming out wonderfully. It will be released to the internet at a free film for fun and enjoyment. It would be neat if you could post this on your news page, we could keep you updated with new models, scenes, trailers, etc. We currently have a trailer on youtube. you can find it here

I hope that you would be interested in this. if you would like some more info, or pictures, I would be happy to show you. Thanks.

Sean Kelly Should be interesting.

Kyle Orland Good stuff. Also be sure to check out some in-progress models at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYBuexUbiio. Please keep us posted on your progress.

PenguinMan I think my sarcasm meter has run out, so I'll let you off easy THIS TIME.

MetalMan Interesting. It's too bad I'm not the news guy, though, otherwise I could give you a firm answer as to what we could do on covering it as news.

PeachFan Looks pretty neat... but where's Peach? It's not a good Mario movie unless Peach is in it.

Crazyswordsman You make Luigi look all blocky. :(

But other than that, the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen. If Nintendo doesn't shut it down (and I'm PRAYING they won't), if you need any voice actors, call me up. If you make me one, I'll advertise your movie for you. My email is ads2@cec.wustl.edu -CSM

ChunkyKong12345 That looks very interesting. I'll be sure to czech it out when it comes out.

GameGuru Well, already it stays more to the source material than the live-action movie. Also it needs at the end "What? It'sa me, Mario!" in Charles Matinet's voice, because Mario isn't supposed to be serious and that's what I'd do.

Gage If Sean says it is okay to post on the news page then I have no problem doing it. To send me what you want to be known, e-mail me at SNESGuy15@aim.com
Editor's Note: It's OK.
