FOR THE DATE OF
March 25, 2007
Today's guest responder is our news reporter Gage.
Dear SMBHQ, what did you guys think of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! When it was around? I think it's a fairly good cartoon because I watched it for my first time this year when I bought volume two of it this year at circuit city. Also, do you think they should make a computer animated Super Mario Sunshine cartoon or Super Mario Galaxy Cartoon?
glitten
The first Mario cartoon I watched was The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3. Personally, I liked that show better than Super Show, since
it seemed closer to the games. I did like the live action scenes though. As for a new cartoon? I wouldn't hold my breath.
At the time? I loved it. Of course, at the time I was 8 years old. Watching them again on DVD, I've got to say, it just doesn't hold up. The paper-thin puns and maniacal cackling of Bowser are just grating. Not the original Ninja Tutrles cartoon... that's an '80s classic.
Computer animated Mario cartoon? I'm game. But tie it in to the new Mario Galaxy instead of the ill-received Sunshine.
Pft, Super Mario Sunshine is so 2002. Actually, you know, I don't think I ever beat that game. Bowser wins in the end, right?-jay
The SMBSS was pretty good for its time. A new
cartoon would be awesome, but if it were
computer-animated it would be kind of lame. Sort of
like that weird Donkey Kong Country cartoon.
I was too young to see it, and haven't seen it lately either. As for a new cartoon, I would definitely use Super Mario Galaxy, as Super Mario Sunshine by now is so old that people who played it when they are young might be too old to like cartoons now. :p
I used to enjoying watching the show when it was on, but I've only seen a few episodes since then. New Mario cartoons would be cool, but I don't like computer animated shows... the art in hand drawn shows will always be better.
I love the Super Show, I used to watch it when I was a little kid when
it aired in the 80s, and also when it aired on USA in the mornings in
the late 90s. And I would love to see more Mario cartoons, but I
don't think there's as much demand for them anymore, sadly...
Well to be honest I was not even born until 1991 so I really could not watch the show when it aired in 1989. However I did purchase both Volumes of the Super Show collectors DVD set and I must say I did miss out on a good series (can't really help that though). As for a SMS or SMG animated cartoon it would be interesting to see but I'd need to play Super Mario Galaxy before I come to an opinion.
Just thought I'd mention the issue of accents as it wasn't mentioned on your general info on Mario.
Mario Bros the movie with Bob Hoskins as Mario had Mario with an American/New York accent. So do the cartoons. Whereas the newer games in which Mario speaks, i.e from Mario 64 onwards features Mario with an Italian accent. Also, the movie "The Wizard" starring Fred Savage which was used as the launch platform for SMB3 featured a very brief moment in which SMB1 was being played on an arcade machine. I've never seen a Mario game on an arcade machine- do you have any answers about this one?
Leone Edwards
Being half Italian myself, I can say that Mario's current accent is more stereotypically Italian, than actual Italian. Also the so called "New York" accent is pretty much the general accent used
by 2nd generation Italians (maybe with a bit more "omph")
As for SMB in arcades, back in the 80s Nintendo released NES games to arcades in their VS. series. You can read more about that here.
In my opinion, information that comes from games supercedes any information that comes from movies, books, cartoons, etc. So Mario has an Italian accent. So there! As for SMB arcade, it was a stand-alone cabinet that as a slightly altered, harder version of the original game known as Super Mario Bros. Vs. SMB was also often available as one of the choices in the PlayChoice-10 NES cabinets.
*Shudder* Um...please... Don't mention the SMB Movie... We should make that a new rule for the SMBHQ Mailbag. No SMB Movie questions. SMB Movie Questions make Baby Luigi cry.-jay
They need to give Mario a different accent in the
next game, just to throw everyone off completely.
If you went to an old enough restaurant in the late 90's, you could see such a thing. In fact, besides their SMB3 thing, it is unlikely they would create a SMB1 arcade game entirely for the film. Also, are you forgetting the NES-based arcade system, the original (and subsequent) Donkey Kongs, and also the Mario Kart game that was an arcade machine and featured Pac-man?
Many of the arcade games in The Wizard are PlayChoice-10 titles -- essentially NES games you pay to play for a certain amount of time.
You've got a good point with the accents there- I wonder why they
changed Mario's accent. And I actually do have an answer for the
arcade machine! They did have Super Mario Bros. on arcade machines,
and I had the joy of playing it on one back when I was in elementary
school and high school (although the machine didn't work so well when
I was in high school). It was one of many games you could choose on
the Nintendo Players Choice 10 machine (not entirely sure of the name,
though). It offered 10 different NES games to play, and SMB was one
of them. :)
It would have been nice to see a question; you basically voiced fact.
Will Mario ever get a cooler look? You know, besides the boring red shirt
and overalls? I mean, Wario got a cooler look. Why can't Mario? - The one
you all know and love, Valigarmander
Don't mess with a recognizable figure. Just look at what Loonatics done to Bugs Bunny.
Wario got a cooler look? When was this.
And what about Metal Mario? That doesn't count as a cooler look. He's coated in freakin' metal!
Editor's Note: I'd presume the "cooler" look for Wario is his WarioWare get-up.
You mean a red shirt and overalls aren't cool??? WHAT??? WHY AM I BEING TOLD THIS JUST NOW??? No WONDER the girls don't think I'm cool. (Goes to change out of his red shirt and overalls.)-jay
Actually, I don't know you, so stop bothering me
with questions, JERK.
Also, I think Mario should wear Speedos in the next
game.
Cooler? Huh? Wait a minute, I remember you from VGF. Barely.
The reason is simple. If you played any Sonic games, you'd know that when Sonic became 'cooler', it signalled the end of his heyday. Mario's playing it safe by staying himself. On the other hand, they had nothing to lose with making Wario cooler.
But what about Waluigi? Waluigi needs a new look. I mean, he's one of the more neglected characters, save for, maybe Wart.
*Killed by Jay*
I hope not.
Maybe Mario just likes to dress simply, instead of going all out with
his wardrobe.
I'm guess no. I mean Mario has looked the same, in exception to the gadgets he me be involved with, so what makes you think he would look different now?
why did you start the countdown so early?
oh, and in the august 14 2006 mailbag, why was jay
quoting?
what happened to "dethrone the mushroom king?"
SMBHQ RULES!!!!!
rafaela martinez
Why start the countdown? We have nothing better to do.
Why was Jay quoting? Because he had nothing better to do.
Where is the Mushroom King? He probably has something better to do.
Countdown: We're easily bored.
None of your three questions make particular sense, so I'm going to combine them in hopes that they make a new question, that makes more sense. And the new question is..."What happened to jay countdown quoting king mailbag?" Nope...no luck. That makes even less sense.-jay
Because Sean needed something to fill his pitiful,
meaningless existance.
Wasn't my idea.
Various movies.
I think he's gone to Hawaii on vacation.
RULEZZZORRRZZZZ!!!!!!
Uh... So there was time to count down? Someone tried to feed him a poisoned mushroom, so the King is laying low for a while.
I don't know why we started the countdown so early.
I don't remember why he was quoting, just that he was.
I want to take over Dethrone the Mushroom King. (Only it would be
Dethrone Princess Peach or something like that.)
And yes, SMBHQ does rule.
Well, Sean is the one to give you the better answer so I'll just speculate. Odds are the countdown began early was because the 10th Anniversary special commenced. Might as well read Jay's reply on you're question about the 8/14 mailbag.
Do you have: Mario Football ?
Carla McKenna
I'd presume you're talking about "real" football (i.e. soccer), then you mean Super Strikers. In that case - no I don't.
If you mean the football that involves throwing, catching, and tackling (with maybe the odd kicking to actually involve the feet), then that game doesn't exist.
Yes... yes I do. But I can't tell you about it or Nintendo will have my head. Literally!
No I do: not?-jay
Yes. I also have Mario Hockey, Mario Cricket, Mario
Bocce Ball, and of course, Super Mario XTREEM Beach
Death Rally.
We do not have: Mario Football !
Jay, why do we not have: Mario Football ?
And where is: Mario Party 3?
I asked for it: several mailbags ago .
The answer: No.
I don't even think Mario Football exists. Unless you're talking about
the Mario-themed soccer game... and I don't have that.
Nope, only Super Mario Strikers.
In wendy's castle six there are empty blocks which can be filled. How do I get the blue blocks to fill these and make my travel just a little easier??
Greg Smith
Somewhere in the Forest of Illusion, yet I'm too lazy to say how.
I'm guessing you're talking about Super Mario World here. That information can be found in our guide (Sean, a link please?)
Editor's Note: I'm too lazy to post a link. SMBHQ has a search engine you know. Just type "Forest of Illusion" and it would take you to the page.
If you want your life to be easier, why the heck are you playing video games? You should be sitting on your butt all day and watch reruns of Fairly Odd Parents. That's really easy. And you don't even need blue blocks to do it.-jay
You ask the blocks very nicely and they will be
happy to fill right up for you.
You must find the Blue Switch Palace. Don't ask me where it is--I only had SMW for a short time, then accidentally sold it back to Funcoland.
That's right, Funcoland. Death to Gamestop!
Anyway, find the palace, activate the switch, BAM! Blue blocks appear.
The blue switch palace is in the Forest of Illusions. Check a guide for specifics.
I don't know. Don't ask me, I just answer the mail.
Sorry, cannot remember. :(
I have the super mario game where he goes through rooms in a castle. I bought the game used. Is there any way to download the information that originally came with this older Nintendo game? I am having problems figuring out how to play the game. Thanks, John
It would help if you said the name of the game.
Sounds like this could be Mario is Missing or Mario's Time Machine. I think instruction manuals for these are available at tsr's NES archive.
If you can't figure out how to play a Mario game, then not even blue blocks will save you.-jay
Mario is a castle? What game are you talking about?
Sir, I am reasonably certain that you are lying. Mario
would probably sooner go without pasta for a month
before entering a castle.
Find out the name of the game, then go to here, find the listing for it, then open up the respective FAQ for it.
The best thing to do would be to get the game's actual name and search for a guide on it. Most include gameplay basics.
Uhh... there are many games where he goes through rooms in a castle.
SMB1, SMB: Lost Levels, SMB2 to an extent, SMB3, SMW, Super Mario
64....
It would have been nice for you to supply a title of the game. But for you're needs I suggest you check out gaming guides online or something.
Dear sir, I was wondering if you have any idea when
the original super mario brothers, super mario 2, and
super mario 3 might be released in game cube foremat.
I love these games, however I would like to see them
for the game cube. thanks if you have any information
teddy
These days they will be more likely found on the Wii's Virtual Console.
Gamecube format... probably never. The Gamecube is D-E-D dead. The original SMB is already available on the Wii's download service, the virtual console, though, and SMB2 and 3 will doubtless follow. Contemporize... man!
You're going to be waiting a loooooooooooong time. Seriously, though. You don't have a copy of SMB in one of the five billion other formats it's been released in. Go pick up the gameboy version.-jay
GBA re-releases + Game Boy Player are going to be
your best bet, dood.
That will probably never happen.Unless you buy the Gameboy Advance games, a Gameboy Player, and then plug them into the console. Or you buy a Nintendo Wii and download them from the virtual console.
They won't be released on the Gamecube but you can play them on a Gamecube using the Game Boy Advance adapter with the Game Boy Advance versions of the games. If you get a Wii you can download them on the Virtual Console.
You'd have more luck waiting for them all to come out on the Virtual
Console for the Wii. I've got SMB downloaded already. Oh, so very
worth the $5.
I'm not really sure if Nintendo announced this...
Dear SMBHQ, I have just recently purchased a copy of the new hit game, Yoshi's Island DS, and I'm stuck on a part. Maybe one of the staff memebers of this site has played it. And before you say anything, yes, I have looked at a walthrough and it hasn't helped me. Anyway, I am stuck at world 4-3 (at least I think that's it) Six Faced Sal's Fort. So if you have played and beaten this game, now would be a good time to listen. IN six faced sal's fort there is a part I am stuck at. It is where after you get all three of the numbered balls and put them in place to lift the rock blocking your path to the next door. After that I know to go past the lava and swallow all the bats. But in the next room, I don't know what to do. The walkthrough said to just keep baby mario and not to switch and to just cross under the gigantic rock slabs that fall on you. But every time the rocks are too fast and smash me. I also tried it with Baby DK and holding down and pressing Y but it still doesn't work. What should I do?

**Grabs DS that's sitting beside him with Yoshi's Island already loaded in (for real)**
**Plays level talked about**
First, it's level 4-4 you're talking about. Second, running works for me. Are you trying to get all the coins or something?
I have played the new Yoshi's Island, but I do not recall the solution to this problem off the top of my head. I don't remember having any trouble with it, though.
Sweet, I haven't played YI DS. That means I don't have to read the rest of your long question.-jay
I think "hit game" is a bit of a misnomer. I mean,
have you actually seen a game hit anything? Wiimotes,
sure, but not games themselves.
Another question from you? Jeez, we need more emails. No offence, of course. Just that I thought more people had questions. @_@
Never played it, sadly, however I've heard of Six Faced Sal. Perhaps This Can answer your question?
Maybe someone else can help you with this one, I have no idea.
Sadly, I don't have this game for my DS yet. Otherwise, I'd attempt to help.
Sean is the dude to ask seeing how he loves this game.
Editor's Note: Like? Yes. Love? No.
Hello again,
I can't be bothered going through the whole site to try and find wheteher or not you know this so I won't, but on the 101 section you mention that on SMB2 if you duck for too long Mario will flash. You probably already know that this is to perform an extra high jump but it wasn't on the moves page so I thought I'd let you know on the off chance that you didn't. Oh, and holding the jump button causes both Luigi and Princess Toadstool to float, but you knew that, didn't you? Finally, yes, I wrote Princess Toadstool. She was always Princess Toadstool. I never heard of her being called "Peach" until SM64 was released. Until I see legitimate evidence from the 1980s suggesting otherwise I will stand firm on this rather prickly issue.
Leone Edwards
Since most of the question is you pointing out the common sense knowledge, I'll deal with the Toadstool/Peach issue. She was always named Princess Peach in Japan and Nintendo decided to give her the name in North America. TMK has an interesting page about Mario differences between North American and Japan, which can be found here.
This is absolutely incredible. Are you meaning to tell me that in the Mario 101 section -- A section literally filled with errors about the Mario series, you managed to find... an error about the Mario series! I'm shocked... shocked!
As for Princess Toadstool, she was always called Peach in Japan. But why does information from the 80s trump more recent information? Did you know they've recently unearthed new information about the dangers of AIDS that wasn't available in the '80s. Should this information be ignored because it isn't old enough?
If you can't be bothered going through the whole site, then I guess I can't be bothered to read your whole question. Sounds fair. Ok, that's it! See you next time, gals and germs! Goodnight, everyone! See you in Reno!-jay
I think you need to join us in the 21st century, dood.
Another question from you too? Meh.
Again, those pages are rarely updated. Me, I'd add that. But I can't. So there. As for names...
...How dare you call my Doki Doki Panic SMB2? It was Doki Doki Panic originally, and I never heard of it being called "SMB2" until SMB2 was released. Until I see legitimate evidence from the 1980s suggesting otherwise I will stand firm on this rather large non-issue.
....Oh god. You called Jumpman Mario. And Player 2 Luigi. I must go to the 1980s to search for evidence.
*Leaps into a wall*
Seriosuly, as long as you call Peach something we can recognize, its... no issue. Not even prickly. Unlike prickly pears.
I can't be bothered going through the whole question to try and find its point.
Luigi doesn't float so much as jump really high and run while he does it.
And Princess Toadstool was only Toadstool in America. In Japan, she
has always been Princess Peach, or Peach-hime. I don't know why they
called her Toadstool in America, or suddenly decided to have her go as
Peach in SM64, but oh well.
Yeah thanks....
