SMBHQ MAILBAG

FOR THE DATE OF
January 25, 2007

Today's guest responder for the responder search is ChunkyKong12345.

Hi! I've been a Mario fan for several years, and have been reading the mailbags at your site recently. Of course, I was rolling on the floor with laughter, and I decided to send in a question to you (don't worry, I don't expect an answer any time soon). Here it is:

Are there any Mario related games you consider to be so poorly made or boring that they shouldn't have been made at all? (such as Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon for the Philips CD-i was for Zelda fans). Thanks.

Daniel C.
Sean Kelly The only game that I played that I was truly disapointed with was Mario's Time Machine for SNES, in which I worked hard to get to the end only to have Bowser escape on me. In general, I think all the third-party Mario games shouldn't have been made.

Kyle Orland Well, the obvious answer would be the CD-i's Hotel Mario, but that was actually a halfway decent action puzzler, from what I understand. I think the most embarassing Mario game would have to be Mario's Game Gallery for the PC and Mac. The production values are just so low. For Nintendo-made Mario-related games, I think Yoshi's Story is the worst ever made.

Jay Resop Don't expect an answer anytime soon? ANYTIME SOON??? How DARE you? I'm hurt. Wounded if you will. My soul is crushed. That was a low blow. Low blow indeed, sir. How do you even sleep at night? On a bed of knives. Which are as icy cold as your dark, evil, heart? YOU SHALL NOT DEFEAT ME, DANIEL. MY WILL IS PURE AND NOBLE.

Anyway, I'd say SM64.-jay

PenguinMan I wouldn't call the Zelda CD-i games a COMPLETE waste of time. The amount of comedy those cartoon clips have generated is probably far more than what would be considered sane. I CAN'T WAIT TO BOMB DODONGOS!

MetalMan Ahhh, that's a difficult one, but I'm sure you can see these ones coming from a mile away. Mario is Missing: Miserable 'edutainment' title which bogged down Mario's reputation... and harmed Luigi's to boot.

Besides that, I'd say Mario Brothers for the NES was somewhat of a let-down, considering that NES cartridges and the system were capable of so much more than it actually used.

ChunkyKong12345 Let's look at the CD-i. There was that crappy Hotel Mario.

Als- MARIO IS MISSING!

PeachFan Mario is Missing. I beat that game in an hour. Mario games aren't supposed to be educational, they're supposed to be fun!

Super Mario Galaxy is coming out for the Wii, how do you guys feel on how the game uses the new controller?

nick sabo

Sean Kelly Based on the videos I saw, it looks pretty fun and not TOO much different than past Mario games.

Kyle Orland Well, having played the game at E3, I can't say I was wowed by the use of the Wii remote. Basically, in the demo, you use the remote as a pointer to guide Mario to various stars, which he jumps between almost as if being shot from a cannon. Shaking the controller also does a spin attack. There were some nice uses of the controller, though -- in one boss fight you draw Mario back like a slingshot and launch him at the enemy.

Aside from controller use, though, I was impressed with the game's bright graphics and inventive level designs (running and jumping around the "bottom" of a small plentoid was very cool). I'm very excited about this one.

Jay Resop I'm more excited about Wii Sports. WII SPORTS??? SPORTS??? ON THE WII??? NO WAY!!!-jay

PenguinMan Well, I actually haven't figured out how they're going to use it past what few Wii promo videos I've seen, but hopefully it won't involve playing patty-cake with Bowser.

MetalMan Having actually managed to acquire the Wii, I have a feeling it'll be cool. The Wii controller makes tactics that required tedious spinning around and walking at things a breeze to do, and you can also do some unique stuff with it. Although it also adds another level of complexity to the game, which may or may not make it harder for new players to get into.

ChunkyKong12345 Well, seeing as I have no idea what playing the Wii is like...I think it'll be good.

Anyway, SSBB will most likely pwn SMG.

PeachFan Once I get a Wii and Super Mario Galaxy, I'll let you know.

Hello! first off, I want to say how much of a fan I am of your site, it's the best! on to my question. do you think that super Mario RPG will appear on the wii's virtual console? Nintendo and squire seam to be on good terms. Thanks in advance!

supermarioman

Sean Kelly I would say that it's pretty gosh darn likely, considering that it was one of the best games for the SNES.

Kyle Orland Well, the game is already showing up on the ESRB web site for the Wii with an E for everyone rating. In the past, such a listing has preceeded the actual launch of the game by a few weeks at most. I'd expect it sometime in the spring, summer at the latest.

Jay Resop It's called Super MaRPGio. Get it right.-jay

PenguinMan I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you over the awesomeness of GUNSTAR HEROES.

MetalMan I've investigated the matter, and according to Wikipedia the game has been given an ESRB rating and will probably be put on the virtual console. Good news, indeed!

ChunkyKong12345 Hell yeah. And if it isn't...PITCHFORK AND TORCHES.

PeachFan Oh god, I hope they release Mario RPG on the Virtual Console. That was the first Mario game I'd ever beaten, and it's my favorite Mario game. (Any game where you can play as Peach wins in my book.)

I was just wondering if you were gonna put a area where everyone could submit their own comic creations. Not that the forum aint good enough but It would look a lot better.

Joshua Adams

Sean Kelly I think I Patrick VanDusen once tried converting the sprites section into a fan comix section, but it didn't work out (low quality submissions). However, you heard it here first, you will be able to send comix as part of the 10th Anniversary mini-contests!

Kyle Orland Can't you already submit fan comics to the NC section? Anyone? Bueller?

Jay Resop Ah oh, this looks like a question I should answer.

So I won't.

Sorry. I blame my lack of an answer on President Bush. He's being blamed for most other stuff anyway, so what's one more thing?-jay

PenguinMan Well, you see the fan art section has been... *runs away*

MetalMan Once again, we enter the realm of... Jay's choice. He has some weird contest in mind, though, you could always submit comics to that. Or perhaps SMBHQ could use a fan comics section. Either way, we'd need somebody to run it.

ChunkyKong12345 Jay?

PeachFan I'm not the one to ask. I don't own the website, I just answer their mail. And post random blog entries occasionally.

I have three questions about the mysterious Princess Peach:

1)If Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser all the time, why doesn't she just buy a high-tech security system to protect her?(She doesn't have very good guards, and since she's a princess, I'm assuming she's rich)

2)How come every outfit Peach wears is pink?

3)Why does she share the same name as a fruit these days, rather than having a regular name like Sally or Barbara?

Molinacapecoral

Sean Kelly 1) Because if she did, she wouldn't need Mario and there would be no more games.

2) I think because it's stereotypically the most feminine colour.

3) She WAS named Princess Toadstool for over 10 years, but Nintendo decided that she needed to have the same name worldwide.

Kyle Orland 1) She does, but Bowser keeps breaking them. He's a crafty one.

2) It's her favorite color. DUH!

3) Naming characters after English words is a big thing in Japanese fiction, apparently. At least, it is if Dragon Ball Z is any indication. I mean they named a character Trunks. Like swim trunks. Compared to that, Peach seems downright normal.

Jay Resop 1) Even though she's a princess, she's very poor, and so can not afford a high-tech security system. The Mushroom Kingdom's primary export is toilet paper, afterall.

2) Pink makes her feel like woman. Do do, do do do, do do. Ow.

3) Her real name is actually Fartina, and she changed it to Peach.

-jay

PenguinMan The answer to all three questions is "lampshade".

MetalMan Ah, 3 questions in one! Well, let's see.

1: The Princess doesn't believe in technology, locks on doors, or even defending herself from Bowser in most games. It's odd, too, considering how she can wield a number of sport-related bashing implements as well as beat people up in SSB:M and Super Mario RPG. Maybe she wants to be captured?

2: Stereotypes. All princesses must wear pink, of course! Who could ever think of a non-evil princess wearing... GASP... purple?

3: Given that the alternative is being named after a poisonous mushroom, I think she picked the right name with 'Peach.' Then again, Princess Toadstool does have a formal air to it. And makes me think of a step stool.

ChunkyKong12345 1) Because then Nintendo would have no money.

2) Because real men wear pink.

3) Because you don't change your name.

PeachFan Aww yeah, finally, questions I can answer!

1. If Princess Peach invested in a high tech security system, there would probably be no more Mario games... at least no interesting ones. And that means Mario would be out of a job, for the most part. All he'd do is sit around and play sports all day. Or beat people up. (Yay Smash Brothers.)

2. Peach wears pink because pink is an awesome color.

3. Peach has always been called Peach in Japan (Peach-hime, to be exact) but for some reason she was called Princess Toadstool in America, possibly to go along with the whole Mushroom Kingdom theme.

I just ordered maro paint off of ebay, and I was wondering if there were any sites that told you the mario paint notes for some songs

Christopher Vouis

Sean Kelly I remember trying the songs from Super Mario RPG once. I don't think they turned out well. Personally, I had fun overwriting the existing songs with new notes (i.e. the SMB theme in all dog barks)

Kyle Orland None that I know of, but the regular sheet music notes should match the Mario Paint notes pretty well, as long as there are no sharps/flats and the range doesn't go much more than one octave. I also believe Nintendo's old Mario Paint strategy guide had some music suggestions, if you can track down an old copy.

Jay Resop YES!!! SOMEONE USED E-BAY! THANK YOU, GOD!-jay

PenguinMan Why do you need to make your own songs? The three pre-made songs are more than enough for any all-night party.

MetalMan I haven't played Mario Paint before, however I do know you can search for sheet music of many popular songs online via Yahoo or other search engines. If it has a sheet-music related method of showing notes, you're in business for sure. If not, eh, there should be some relationship between sheet music and Mario Paint.

ChunkyKong12345 I'm sure there are.

Not very helpful, am I?

PeachFan Hm. Since Mario Paint's rather old, I don't know if there are any sites out there that would list the notes for Mario Paint songs. (God, I miss Mario Paint- I once managed to draw a really awesome Sailor Moon picture and compose Tuxedo Mask's theme to go along with it. Ahahah, I was such a fangirl back then.)

I was just wondering acouple things:

1: when will you get the clothes toys and accessories page in the store open?

2: I've learned that mario had 3 tv shows, the only one I've heard of is the super show one, what are the other two and where can I see some old episodes?

I don't mean to sound demanding if I did.

from, super waluigi

Sean Kelly 1) Clearly you question was sent before the store used Amazon's aStore service. As you can see there are both a clothes and toys section.

2) Other than Super Show, there were shows for SMB 3 and SMW.

Kyle Orland 1) When we find some clothes/toys/accessories worth selling

2) The other two are The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. Check the cartoons page.

Jay Resop Pft, what's with all of these people asking multiple questions. Talk about being greedy.-jay

PenguinMan No, that was not demanding at all. I moonlight as a butler, and trust me, you sounded as demanding as a cauliflower.

MetalMan Another multi-question one? GASP!

1: *Copies Sean's answer to this question*

2: Uh, Captain N and one other one, as far as I know, existed. To legally see them, you need to buy old VHSes/DVDs of them. Probably from eBay.

ChunkyKong12345 First off. Go Waluigi.

Onto the questions.

1: I don't know.

2: The other two are The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.

PeachFan 1. I don't manage the store. As I said earlier, I answer the mail and post the blogs.

2. There's the Super Show, SMB 3, and Super Mario World.

I tried to make a comic using CodieKitty's Tutorial, but when I tried copying the image, it didn't work. What am I doing wrong?

Chris Breden

Sean Kelly Darn, I have to read CK's turtoral....one sec

**Goes to Read it**

OK, I should say that MS Paint is a TERRIBLE way to make sprite comics (no offence to Jay, CK, or anyone else that uses Paint). I say get a better program (GIMP is a good Open Source program) and copy and paste multiple images in program.

Sheesh! I should make a tutorial!

Kyle Orland Er, I'm not quite sure. What program are you using. What operating system? What are you doing to copy the image?

Jay Resop You have to press control-alternate-delete first.-jay

PenguinMan You obviously need to stop using Micro$oft products. And no, that is not an Xbox that you see behind me, it's my... uhh... Xbox-shaped effigy. Yeah, that's it.

MetalMan Copy, I read your message. You need to use the select tool in MSPaint, put whatever it is you want to copy inside the box, press ctrl-c, then press ctrl-v and a clone of it should appear in the upper-left corner. Then proceed with the tutorial. ...This question must be old--Codie's site moved a while ago!

Editor's Note: Even though written by CK, the tutorial is part of NC.

ChunkyKong12345 It would've been helpful if you'd included more details. Did you host the image somewhere?

PeachFan Gah, more questions I can't answer. Why don't people ask more questions about Peach? Or making costumes? I can answer those.

yes hello this is aubrey long time fan of ya site,

i was wondering did u ever see the mario movie with bob hoskins.and wat did u think about it?

second of all was luigi an orphan in the movie???????????, when he mario and daisy and mario's girl had dinner, i noticed dat daisy said she was an orpahn and luigi wen on to say "u don't know who your mother or ya father are neither, b/c mario here brought me up, he's been my mother my father my brother my everything..lol"

so i just wanted to know, dat for sure im 21 and i saw the movie in theathers in 1993 on may 28! da day it came out! plus wat was ya thoughts on the movie? was was luigi so younger then his brother mario, and are they really blood brothers in the movie? was luigi indeed an orphan in the moviem or was it dat something happren to they parents(which was'nt explained and mario just wastchewd over luigi and raised him????????????????????????)

hit me back

asap

GDHOOVERFOLKS

Sean Kelly I saw the movie in theatres, at the young naive age of 11. I would like to see it again now to analyze it now that I'm a film student. Even if the plot and story sucked, it may have still made good use of the mise-en-scene. :P

Kyle Orland Wow, nice accent there. Anyway, I saw the movie in theatres and numerous times on TV and video, and I think it's a travesty. It took everything that made Mario special and perverted it into some sort of dystopian Blade Runner-esque world that has practically nothing to do with the Mario games. I did like the Bob-omb though (BOB-OMB!)

Anyway, yes, it seems both Mario Bros. are orphans in the movie. No idea whta happened to their parents, but... aw, who cares about the plot of the movie. They obviously just threw in the orphan thing so Luigi and Daisy would have some more connection.

Jay Resop Ya, u, wat, dat, wen, b/c, im, da, wastchewd????? Hit me back??????????? Ur 21????????????????

I hate the internet.-jay

PenguinMan The shift key won't bite you. I promise.

MetalMan I see... uh... I sorta barely remember that movie, considering my lack of watching it past the age of 8. In general, I think it twisted Mario canon to meet its own, "Hollywood" standards, and missed out on portraying true Mario. But it was worth one watch, if nothing else but how strange it was.

ChunkyKong12345 For a 21 year old, you sure have bad spelling and grammar.

PeachFan I try to forget that movie ever existed.

Wicked site. I've been looking at it from time to time over the years. I was wondering if I could, with your permission feature some of the mario merchandise on my site, an NES site. Keep up the good work.

Jason Hogan

Sean Kelly Go ahead. It's not like we own the rights to the merchandise.

Kyle Orland Feel free, just be sure to give us proper credit and hit us back with a link. Thanks.

Jay Resop NO. PERMISSION IS DENIED. PLEASE ENTER MONEY.-jay

PenguinMan Yes, but only if you bribe me with $100 and a coconut cream pie so I don't tell the Feds.

MetalMan That's up to the guys who made it, however I feel it'd be silly for you to just copy/paste their work and put it on your site. Then again, you could always link to it. Nobody would object to that, unless you caused it to be slashdotted (overloaded with people looking at it).

ChunkyKong12345 Uh, I don't know. Sean? Kyle?

PeachFan I'm not the person to ask, but hey, if I was the person to ask, I'd let you.
