Let's celebrate SMB8Q with some of your fine (or not so fine) questions.

hi!

Me and my mates were playing mario tennis the other day and someone asked the question "How many games do you think mario has starred in and been part of??" We sat thinking about it but havnt got a clue. Can you help??

Nelly

Sean Kelly: A Lot

Kyle Orland: A whole lot. It depends on if you count cameo appearances or appearances of Mario characters in a game. Our games list is a pretty complete listing of all these appearances, so you can add them up from there.

Jay Resop: Wow, that's a hard one. I have no idea how to answer that question. It's not like there isn't some list out there, that lists every single Mario game, in a nice list format. Why! Oh why isn't there a list out there! Dear God, deliver us a list!!! Save us from a listless world! Bring me a list, or bring me death! Ask not what your list can do for you, but what you can do for your list! PLEASE! I'M BEGGING YOU! WE NEED A LIST OF MARIO GAMES!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH! (Jumps out of a window).-jay

PenguinMan: More than 1 but possibly less than 100.

EAM: http://www.smbhq.com/list.htm

Luigi128: Well, including cameos, I have no idea what the actual number is, but I'm pretty sure it's over 70.

PeachFan: http://www.smbhq.com/list.htm That should have the answers to all your questions.

Hi. I love ur site and i have a way to improve it. u can have a test to see what Mario character u are most like. email me back and tell me what u think.

Best Wishes, Ryan

Sean Kelly: Chances are, if you do a search on Quizilla, you will find a million such tests. Why would we have to make one?

Kyle Orland: We already have one of those to see which Neglected Character you are like. Good enough?

Jay Resop:  Sweet! I think I see a theme in this week's questions. I'm guessing the theme is "Stuff That You Would Be Able To Find The Answer To Easily If You Just Got Off Your Lazy Behind And Looked Around The SMBHQ Site A Little Bit Instead Of Bothering The Mailbag People For An Answer, You Lazy, Lazy, Lazy, Bums." Anyway, the answer to this question is: http://www.smbhq.com/nc/nctest.html. See! We're SO good, we were able to take your suggestion and immediately implement it into the site! WOW! Talk about speedy!-jay

PenguinMan: I think ur idea is very much played out. Also, Jay has you beat by a year or so.

EAM: Make up the test and maybe we'll do it.

Luigi128: Actually, we already have one of those. It's one of my favourite things on the site. It's in the neglected characters section under one of the sub-sections therein.

PeachFan: That is an interesting idea. However, I think it may have been done before.

Hi, Me and my brother are playing super mario world for the super nintendo. and we don't no how to fly. can you please tell us? we no how to get up but we don't no how to keep on flying without droping out of the air. We also need to figure out how to get to castle five..we don't no where the secret pathway thing is..plz right back as soon as you can

Love always,

~*~Teresa~*~

Sean Kelly: I would, but Kyle answers these questions better.

Kyle Orland: Flying is a bit tough. First you have to get a running start and then jump after Mario puts his arms out. Your probably figured this out already. Staying in the air takes some good timing and reflexes.

Note that these directions apply if Mario is facing to the right. Reverse them if he is facing left.

If you keep holidng right while Mario is in the air, he will nose dive sharply towards the ground. If you hold left, the cape will pillow out like a parachute and you will float gently. The key to staying up is switching between these states rythymically. After you hit the top of your intial launch, keep holding right to dive bomb down for a second and get some speed. Then, before you lose too much height, hit and hold left quickly. You'll lose some speed but gain a lot of height. You should hear a whooshing sort of sound if you did this right. As soon as you start losing height again, hit right to go back to the dive bomb, and repeat as necessary. Of course, though this whole process, continue holdign the run and jump buttons to stay in the air. It takes some practice, but if you're good you can fly almost indefinitely with this plan.

The forest strategy question is answered in our SMW guide

Jay Resop:  To fly in Super Mario World is an art. An artful art. An artfully artful art. An artastically artfully artful art. An artastically artfully artful art of artfulness. An...well, you get the point. To summarize, I don't know the answer.-jay

PenguinMan: Well, playing SMW won't help you fly. As far as I know, people usually can't fly without some kind of machine. I'd recommend an airplane. Just watch out for the strip-search at the security clearance section.

EAM: To fly run for a while with the cape and then jump and hold the button.

Luigi128: When you jump to fly and press forward you will start to go into a head-dive. You then press backwards on the d-pad and you will soar up into the air. Press forwards and you will go back into the dive. Repeat this process until you've had enough fun in the air.

PeachFan: I can't help you with the secret castle, since I haven't gotten past Donut Plains yet (I know, I'm a horrid Mario fan), but I can help with the flying! When you're in the air, you'll want to push the direction button that's the opposite direction of the way you're flying (left for flying to the right, right for flying to the left) and that will pull you up a bit. You'll know if you're doing it right if it looks like Mario's sorta bouncing along the screen.

I remember seeing an episode of the Mario cartoons where Mario is boxing (?), but a koopa hypnotises him before the fight. Wondering what episode this is (can you post a synopsis of the episodes you've seen?).

Thanks Sam

Sean Kelly: Well I know there was this episode of the SMB3 show, which may be the episode you are thinking about:
Toad is deliving money to the orphanage. When he arrives he falls asleep and doesn't notice the owner, of the orphanage, take the money. When he awakes, he thinks Bowser stole it. So, to get replacement money, he enters his cousins into a wrestling tournament, where they would face the sledge brothers. The morning of the fight, Larry (or Cheatsy or whatever they called him), who was managing the Sledge Bros. hypnotized Toad's cousins, so they will stay asleep for three days. Then Toad crys like a baby and Mario and Luigi wrestling in the cousins place. The Mario brothers win, Toad brings the prize money to the orphanage, and finds out the whole thing was not needed.

Kyle Orland: Don't remember this one personally.

Jay Resop:  Oh yeah, I remember that episode. Clear as a bell. The episode was titled "Cinderella Mario." It featured Mario as a poor father trying to support his family during the Great Depression. He fights his way to glory by challenging Max Bowser. And then, when the clock was about to strike midnight, he ran away from the ball, leaving behind his glass slipper. The prince searched the land for the person who fit the glass slipper, and he found Mario and they lived happily ever after. The end.-jay

PenguinMan: Don't give Nintendo any more Mario game ideas PLEASE.

EAM: I'm not familiar with the Mario cartoons.

Luigi128: Sorry, I have never seen any of the Mario cartoons.

PeachFan: I don't think I've seen this one yet... and I've seen quite a few Mario cartoons. (Although most of them were from the Super Show). Sorry I can't be of more help.

i cannot figure out how to use the anchor. i dont know wat it does, where or when to use it. if you could help me out on this it would be great.

John Smith

Sean Kelly: The anchor stops the airship from moving around the map.

Kyle Orland: The anchor is, without question, the most useless item ever in a Mario game. You use it on an airship and, if you die on that airship, it will not fly to a new location on the map. This is rarely, if ever, useful.

Jay Resop:  Yeah, the anchor is worthless. Just try to sell it to your younger brother.-jay

PenguinMan: Anchors are used to keep ships from drifting at sea. You usually find them attached to boats

EAM: The anchor stops the Airship from flying away.

Luigi128: With all the mario games and everything out there, you should seriously be more specific about what you are referring to.
Editor's Note: I thought it was common knowledge that the anchor is in SMB3

PeachFan: Luckily, I know what it does, even though I've never gotten one or used it. The anchor, when used in SMB3 on the map screen, stops the Koopa Kids' ship from moving around on the map screen, making it easier to get to.

To SMBHQ mailbag:

I LOVE YOUR WEBSITE! It is like a dream come true for me! And by now I have already sent about 5 or 6 e-mail to you, regarding game ideas, Super Mario Battles, idea game reviews, etc. I don't want to make this too long, but I still want to say a few things. I have loved Mario ever since I first played Super Mario Kart and Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES (I forget which one I played first)! And your site has good everything a Mario fan could ask for! You guys are geniuses, or genii, or whatever the plural version for genius is. By the way, my favorite Mario-related game up to date is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, seeing as I also love RPG's as well! I have also always wanted to play Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, but that's really hard to find! Oh, well, at least I have the first Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. I want to end this soon, so I'll just say this last. Have you, perhaps, heard of Nintendoland? They have everything there is do do with Nintendo. But you see, there are these Deathmatches there that are similar to you Super Mario Battles, but the results are done by voting for the winner instead of your "Tale of the Tape" idea. But however, I can't vote, write a summary for a battle, give suggestions, or do anything because my e-mails keep getting sent back to me because of a "permanent fatal error" that came across. If you happen to know why this is happening, could you help me in any way possible? If you happen to know the creators of the website... Tell them how EXTREMELY PISSED OFF I AM about leaving us caring and loving Nintendo fans up to dry!!! Now I know how busy people like you can get. I mean, you get tons of mail per day. Yeah, I've seen it before. So, you don't really have to do anything hard or special, in fact, you don't have to do anything at all. I am just asking you from the bottom of my Mario-loving heart to help me through this thing. Not that I need those Deathmatches (especially with your SMBattles), but it would really be nice if you can help me! If you have never been to Nintendoland, just go to nintendoland.com. But don't worry about it, because that site is nothing compared to your site! That's about all I have to say. Congratulations on a great job with this site. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Matt Bankey

Sean Kelly: No Comment (Super Mario Battles is closing down BTW).

Kyle Orland: Hey, Matt, glad you like the site. I know of Nintendoland and think it is/was a great site, but I can totally understand why the creators had to move on. While you might see it as leaving you fans "high and dry," the people behind NintendoLand probably had other things that were more important in their lives. Maintaining a site like this takes a lot of work for not much reward, and often people can get burned out focusing on such a narrow subject. This is not a slight against people working on or reading fan sites -- obviously I'm a big supporter of fan sites like this one -- but readers should understand that sites like these are usually only a small part of the authors' larger life and interests. Broadening horizons never hurt anyone.

Jay Resop:  I believe genii is acceptable. Actually, it isn't. But it sounds cooler. In Spanish, it would be "los genios". Actually, from what I understand, Nintendoland stopped updating year ago. Although I think they're trying to bring it back. (GASP! JAY ACTUALLY GAVE A SERIOUS ANSWER! *Pigs fly by*) Although there are a couple of problems with your lengthy e-mail. First, you did not mention NC at all for your reasons for loving SMBHQ. That is unacceptable. Secondly, you did not mention NC Deathmatches, which are infinitely better than Nintendoland's Deathmatches.-jay

PenguinMan: You know, you could've done something extremely productive with the time you spent writing that diatribe. Like mowing the lawn. Or washing the dog. Or playing Mario Is Missing

EAM: Heh, hey Matt. I've been to Nintendoland, but I've never really explored it. The ROM for SMRPG is easy to find, not that I'd know ;) .

Luigi128: Actually, I have absolutely nothing to do with that.

PeachFan: I don't really think we can do anything about the errors you're getting, seen as it's not our website. But I could be wrong. I dunno. I'm just the new girl.

Hey, i checked out your smhq site, it looks awesome. I myself am a Mario fan, and have set up a huge Mushroopm Kingdom forum game (link: www.tmkrpg.com) and am needing help getting it off the ground. I have enough memebrs to keep it very active, but something tells me it could do better.

I was wondering if you would consider being a affiliate for tmkrpg.com.....Well, there, my questions in the air, i could really use your help. I eagerly await your reply.

Shane

Sean Kelly: Hmmmmm.......

Kyle Orland: I don't know about any formal affiliation, but we'd be happy to give you a link on this page, and perhaps on our links page as well. The site looks neat in the 30 seconds I just took to skim it. Good luck to you.

Sean Kelly: Yeah, a link. A link will do.

Jay Resop:  You can be an affiliate...IF! You answer me these questions three! *Dies for using an overly used Monty Python and the Holy Grail quote*-jay

PenguinMan: We do have forums of our own. Thank you for the oh-so-generous offer though.

EAM: Someone else can get this.

Luigi128: That's not my department.

PeachFan: I'm not the one to ask. If I owned the website, maybe. But I don't. Just the mailbag girl.

To Whom it may concern: How would I go about buying a Mario Doll - the promotional giveaways from Wendy's '04? Please advise.
John

Sean Kelly: You could have gone to Wendy's

Kyle Orland: Hmmm, I'd try asking at your local Wendy's, or contacting Wendy's corporate offices. I bet they have a bunch of extra dolls lying around. Failnig that, try eBay.

Jay Resop:  To answer this question, I have created a special image, which will be used for now on.-jay
Editor's Note: Sadly Jay has forgotten to make the giant eBay image that he was planning to make. Maybe next time. :P

PenguinMan: I'm not even going to answer this, because I know this has already been answered AT LEAST 573 times.

EAM: Try ebay.

Luigi128: E-bay is probably your only hope.

PeachFan: There's a place you can look, it starts with an e and the end rhymes with hay.

hello my name is charlie and i was wondering if there was going to be another super mario bros. cartoon if so what station will it be on sincerely, charlie
Sean Kelly: No, but the Super Show is being released on DVD

Kyle Orland: Don't hold your breath. It's all about Kirby this and Sonic that nowadays in the VG cartoon market.

Jay Resop:  Hold on....I'm trying to think up a humorous answer to this question.........BLAST! Nothing is coming to mind! Father! I have failed you! *Dies again*-jay

PenguinMan: Sadly, television rarely gives its viewers what it actually wants (except Freakazoid, although that hasn't been on in FOREVER), so the chance of that happening isn't likely.

EAM: I don't know of any plans for one.

Luigi128: Probably not.

PeachFan: I honestly don't know if there's going to be another SMB cartoon. Mario's not as popular as he used to be back when I was a kid. Sad, isn't it?

Hi,

We've enjoyed the Mario games for years with a vcr and tv setup. Is it possible to buy a version that will operate on a computer with XP, windows, etc... ? I saw the educational version on your website. Is that all that is available?

Thanks,
J.Martinez

Sean Kelly: There have been a few. Both legal and non.

Kyle Orland: It's possible through the legal gray area known as emulators. I won't go into detail in this limited space. Do a google search for "NES emulator" (link) and start your journey of illicit discovery!

Jay Resop:  You could always steal games with emulation. Or get a TV Tuner for your computer. Or put your computer and your gaming consol into the microwave, and set it on high for five hours. That should do it.-jay

PenguinMan: Well, you could buy a TV card for you computer, but other than that, Mario is still very much a proprietary Nintendo character. The PC games just bought a license to mask the fact that their product was subpar in quality (possibly. I don't know, since I never played it. See, I CAN be fair.)

EAM: From the list of Mario games on the site:
  • Mario Teaches Typing - PC
  • Mario Teaches Typing 2 - PC
  • Mario's Game Gallery - PC/Mac

Luigi128: Most of the Mario games are designed to work on video game consoles. You could always go and download and illegal emulator and roms. (I don't think it's illegal if you own the game)

PeachFan: Unfortunately, Mario games, aside from Mario Teaches Typing and any other educational games out there, aren't sold for computers. So yeah, that's all that's available for sale for computers involving Mario.

Jay's Final Comment: I am the defender of the night...I am...DARKWING DUCK! LET'S GET DANGEROUS!-jay
