FOR THE DATE OF
November 4, 2004

All right guys, the whole gang's here for this edition of the mailbag.  Hopefully with Kyle and Jay now onboard, we'll get to do these more often.  LET'S GO!!

Hi - i was in a discussion with some friends of mine, and i got to
wondering if you could please answer me the following questions:

1) How tall is Mario?
2) How much does Mario weigh?
3) How tall is Luigi?
4) How much does Luigi weigh?

(If not able to answer above)

1) If Mario were human, how tall would he be?
2) If Mario were human, how much would he weigh?
3) If Luigi were human, how tall would he be?
4) If Luigi were human, how much would he weigh?

This information will be used (with due credit to SMBHQ) for an
open-subject research paper, so the information (or some idea) would be
greatly appreciated! Thank you for your cooperation, and i look forward
to hearing back from you! Thanks again!

-Aaron

Sean Kelly: Technically there are no official stats for either of the Mario Bros' height or weight.  Pixel wise in SMB2 the Mario Bros height 32 pixels for Mario and 36 pixels for Luigi.  I'm sure the other guys can answer your question better, so I'll just leave it to them.

Kyle Orland:
1) I recently read somehwere that he's four feet, but I didn't see any source for that information. Problem is there's no real world basis for comparison... he seems about the hiehgt of a door in SM64, but maybe the doors are just small. Four feet sounds good to me.

2) Mario's kinda pudgy, but he's short so... 200 pounds?

3) Luigi is about a head taller than Mario, so I'd say five feet.

4) Luigi is very svelt, but tallish. 150, 160 pounds.

Be sure to let us know about your paper.

Jay Resop:
1) 5 feet and 9.121231412515567457653453476457456523421426456 inches.  Exactly.
2) 358 pounds.
3) I think something like 7 feet 6 inches.
4) He's too shy to tell.

Oh wait, these are supposed to be for research?  Then please, don't take me seriously.-jay

PenguinMan: A research paper on the Mario Bros.? Good luck with that. Anyway for your questions:

1. Shorter than Luigi
2. More then Luigi
3. Taller than Mario
4. Less than Mario

(Repeat for the other 4)

Also, I thought Mario and Luigi were already human...

EAM: In Super Mario World Mario is 20 pixels tall and Luigi is 22 pixels tall. In the games Mario and Luigi are represented as a group of pixels formed by various colors. Color is reflected light energy. Energy has no weight.

I found the average height for a man to be about 5' 9", or 69 inches. That could be Mario. To get Luigi's height then, based on the heights in SMW do 69+2(69/20)=75.9. Luigi is about 6' 4". A weight chart says you should weight about 150 pounds at six feet, but we could assume Mario is about 50 pounds over weight which puts him at 200 pounds. The chart says about 155 for Luigi.

Luigi128: First of all, Mario and Luigi ARE actually human. (Don't feel bad, I used to think they weren't, too.) And secondly, here are the answers:

1.) Short
2.) A Lot
3.) Tall
4.) Not Much

Hey, I just started surfing your website about a week ago… and I think it's
great.  It answers a lot of questions, and also brings back old memories
from when I was a kid, playing those games.

Your website has everything there is to know about Mario, but I do have a
few questions for you that I didn't see on the website:

1. Luigi is most commonly shown with a blue shirt, brown shoes, green
overalls, and a green cap.  However, in the original Super Mario Bros; Luigi
looks like Firepower Mario normally except green (meaning that Luigi is
dressed in white, with a green shirt).  But when Luigi gets firepower, he
looks like Mario.  My question is, is Super Mario Bros. the only game in
which Luigi looks like this?  And why was he changed for this game, or to
another color?

2. In which game does it varify that Luigi is younger than Mario?

3. In which game does it varify that the brothers' last name is Mario?

4. Did Donkey Kong ever take sides with Bowser or Wario?

5. Why can some Koopa-Troopas fly, and some can't?  Why are some green and
some red?  Are they different creatures?

6. Are mushrooms Mushroomland-steroids?  (LOL, this one is kind of a joke).

7. Are the coins in the mystery-boxes Mushroomland currency?  How much is
each coin worth, because it seems like a life is worth a dollar.  (Another
smartass joke by me).

Thanks for building such a great site.  I'm sure I'll be entertained for a
while.  See you later.

Calen

Sean Kelly:
1. I believe this was a result of the limitations of the original NES.
2. I don't think any games do.
3. None.  I think it Shigeru Miyamoto and/or the SMB movie that stated that fact.
4. Nope, and probably never will either.  He IS considered a good guy outside of Mario games you know.
5. Paratroopas are a different species of Koopa
6. Doubt it.  Though I believe drug references are a reason Nintendo changed the name from Magic Mushrooms to Super Mushrooms.
7. The only times the coins are actually worth anything is the Mario RPGs.  However, if you notice the dollar sign in SMB3, you can see that each coin is about a dollar each.

Kyle Orland:
 1) Yes, it is the only game. I don't know why, for sure, but I'd guess it was to save sprite space. By only having one sprite set for Luigi/Fire-Mario and one for Mario/Fire-Luigi, they saved a lot of space over having four seperate ones, space that could be used for more levels, etc.. Later on, with more space, this became less of a concern.

2) I'm pretty sure this wasn't established in any game, but instead in the Comics. And you know how much I trust those (not much)

3) That wasn't in a game, but it was verified by Shigeru Miyamato in an interview. This is why they're the MARIO brothers... the surname is Mario.

4) No...

5) Not different creatures, more like different breeds of the same creature. The ones with wings might be sonsidred a different species, but the same genus for sure.

6) I don't get it

7) Hah. HAH! Seriously, no, they aren't currency, but magic, energy giving coins. Uh... sure.

Jay Resop:  What's with all of these multi-question questions?  Heh.
1) Hm...it's been so long since I've played the classics, that I couldn't say.  If it's one thing I know about computer programmers, is that sometimes there's simply no method to their madness, heh.
2) Er....um...er...um...  I'm sure they said something about Luigi being younger in one of the NES games.  Yeah, that's it.  If not that, then Yoshi's Island.  Maybe.
3) I don't think it was ever varified in any of the games.  Just the stupid movie for all I know.  That, and we're supposed to assume that when they say "Mario Bros.", they mean their last name.  Yeah, kinda dumb.  Heh.
4) Nope.  The only mario games that have DK have DK fighting solo.
5) Um...They're different breeds.  Like dogs.
6) If they are, then Mario won't be able to compete in the next Olypmics for sure.  And probably won't be able to play baseball anymore either.
7) One coin is a million, billion, zillion, kagradrillion dollars.  Exactly.  But aparently all you can buy with them is "life".  Which is kinda odd.

PenguinMan:
1. It's probably just the technical limitations of video games at the time. They changed him later because he didn't look as good to the designers.

2. I'm not sure if any game in particular that, although it was probably around the time of SMB 2.

3. It wasn't a game, I believe. It was in the movie.

4. Only in Mario Party.

5. Green Troopas only move in one direction, even if they have to fall off an edge. Red ones can turn around.

6. In a way, I suppose, hehe.

7. 1 Coin = 1 Rupee

EAM:
1. SMB and SMB3 for NES both had the same sprite for Firey Mario and Luigi. Probably just to save space.
2. The movie.
3. The movie.
4. No.
5. Why are some birds green and some red?
6. No.
7. Judging by the cost of items in SMRPG, coins aren't worth much.

Luigi128:
1.) Luigi's outfit has changed throughout his history. In Mario Bros., the arcade game, he was brown and green. I have one shirt where his colors are practically inverted to what they are today. But anyways, that's probably the reason for all of this...
2.) Luigi's not younger than Mario, they're twins dadgummit! Only a few recent games claim that Luigi is younger. And don't say that he came out second, either, because they were both delivered by a stork!
3.) Their last name is Mario because they are called the "Mario Brothers"
4.) No
5.) Because some have wings
6.) Yeah, Mario and Luigi get high off 'em
7.) Play Paper Mario or SMRPG... coins are currency

I would love to have a Mario Beenie Babies.  Didn’t see anything on Nintendo’s website.  Do you know where I could order these or is the picture on the products page old?

Constance Campbell
Sean Kelly: I think the Mario Beenie Babies have been discontinued (they came out sometime around 1994-1996).  If you really want them, you can check out the brand new SMBhq Auctions page (brought to you by eBay) and see if someone has posted them.

Kyle Orland: The picture on that page is now very old. If Nintendo isn't selling them any more, your best bet is eBay or some secondhand shop. I currently have a Mario beany staring at me from the top of my desk. He's so CUTE!

Jay Resop:  Ebay is your friend.  Go to ebay.  Live with ebay.  Eat with ebay.  Um...that is all.-jay

PenguinMan: They didn't have official Beanie Babies of the Mario gang, but I have seen dolls of roughly that size in toy stores before.

EAM: Try ebay.com.

Luigi128: I know there are some... try e-bay.

I noticed a match with Link, and I'm wondering if you know where to get a sprite sheet for Link. I've searched everywhere and found nothing.

Claymecc12

Sean Kelly: A match?  Oh, you probably mean NC Deathmatch #4.  I'll let Jay give the specifics, however if you want a sprite sheet for Link (or most other videogame characters for that matter), the best site I found is The Shyguy Kingdom

Kyle Orland: Try Super LINK HQ

Jay Resop:  Ah, I guess you're talking about NC.  Which means that I may be able to answer your question.  And the answer to your question is...emulation.  When I made that comic, I used a NES emulator and borrowed the Adventure of Link to take a picture of the screen shot and edited out Link.  Other good places to find sprites are Shyguy Kingdom and just looking on Google.-jay

PenguinMan: Does this look like Super Link Brothers HQ to you, buddy?

EAM: Try tsgk.captainn.net.

Luigi128: Here's one with some NES Sprites of him...

I know that the Phillips CD-I was a disc add on for SNES and 64DD was an
add on for N64, but can you tell me the history of each, and were they
were released and where you can find them. Thanks!

-Phantaz

Sean Kelly: Hmmmm.....I think our own Video Game Ombudsman can answer that question better than I can.

Kyle Orland: Actually, CD-i wasn't an add on to the SNES, it was its own stand-alone system when it was released. But it was originally conceived as an SNES add-on. This is why a few Mario and Zelda games appeared on the system -- it was a leftover clause of some deal between Nintendo and Phillips. But since Nintendo didn't actively work on the games, they pretty much sucked.

As for the 64DD, it was originally planned as an add-on for the N64 to make it more powerful, give it more storage space, and in general keep it competitive with the PlayStation. Unfortunately, consumer and industry interest was lukewarm after the relatively recent failure of the Sega CD and 32X, so the plans kept getting pushed back and back until it was pretty much useless. The add-on did eventually come out in Japan with a few games, but it didn't even do well in that gadget-obsessed country.

More information on both these sytems can be found with a quick Google search.

Jay Resop:  Um, can I take the physical challenge?-jay

PenguinMan: The CD-i was a completely different system, and essentially a partnership with Nintendo and Philips after they broke relations with Sony.

The 64DD was only released in Japan. Other than that, I'm not too familiar with it.

EAM: I'm pretty sure they were only released in Japan (I never even heard of the SNES one). If you're lucky someone might have one on ebay, but I doubt it.

Luigi128: I have no idea

Hi! I love SMBHQ.com! It has to be one of my favorite sites for Mario I've ever seen. I'm not trying to nag, or anything, but it seems like you have too many useless pages, and you work on those more than you do the more important ones, like the Strategy Guides page. It hasn't been updated since December 23, 03! (I think the 23...) Like I said, not trying to nag, but I would like to see some useless pages go and some more important one be worked on again.

 Thanks, JoeSchmo

Sean Kelly: Alas, not everyone who works for SMBhq is willing to commit to the site.  In fact, it's funny that you mention the Guides page.  In the 6 years I've been at SMBhq the Guides page has been the section that changed editors the most.  Both the Guides and Codes sections have been retired and will be implemented into the new "Era Pages."  I am aiming to have the first Era Page, "Retro '80s" done by either the late-Winter or Early Spring.

Kyle Orland: Thanks for the letter Joe. Glad you like the site. Over the years, SMBHQ has eveolved into a group effort, a collaboration of sorts between a group of Mario fans working on a bunch of loosely related sections. Some of these people have more time than others to work on their sections. Others have highly active, enthusiastic staff members that update them very often Other sections can't find a willing volunteer to update them and languish without updates.

Unfortunately, a site this size is not managable by only one person, so this inconsistent quality is inevitable. If you really want to change things, sign up to be a staff member on our Help Wanted page!

Jay Resop:  Well, if we had some competent people to work on those sections, then sure, they'd be updated.  You can take over those sections if you want.  Because simply put, we can only do so much.  Sean does his work for the site, and I do my work, which has been mostly on NC now a days.  So we can't do it all.  We need more staff if you want other sections updated.-jay

PenguinMan: *Prods Sean* Yeah, man you heard him. Hop to it.

(Edit By SK: Hey, you try balancing Computer Programming homework and a website sometime. :P)

EAM: To be honest I really like the "useless" pages... but you aren't the first to say something like this. Take a look here.

Luigi128: This has to do with the fact that most of the sections on SMBHQ are run by different people. Therefore, if there are important sections getting run by lazy people, you get the idea.

Hey guys. Great site. Best Mario site out there! I have a question for the fanfiction team. Why did you erase 'The average, Day in the Life of a Plumber" story? I thought it was pretty good and funny. Just asking. Bye!

-SWORDOF91

Sean Kelly: I would love to answer that question, but Fan Fiction ain't one of my 5 billion sections. :P

Kyle Orland: I haven't heard about this before now, so I have no comment.

Jay Resop:  Beats me.  I will instead use this opportunity to SPAM my favorite section of the site, Neglected Mario Characters.  Wee.  Look at that.  A link to the site.  http://www.smbhq.com/nc/.-jay

PenguinMan: It was starting to go bad, and we wanted to get rid of it before it got any worse.

EAM: It contained a secret evil message.

Luigi128: Well, you see, the author actually requested that I take it off. I would never remove a story that I had posted for any other reason... so there you have it.

When I finished the Chuck Quizmo's Trivia Challenge, I got a 10 out of 10,
but when I clicked on the link to get my prize, the link doesn't work! What
happened?

Signed, Bobby.

Sean Kelly: Uhhhhhh....nevermind that!  Chuck Quizmo's Trivia Challenge will be relaunched shortly WITHOUT the prizes.  However, all the former prizes are now part of the downloads page.

Kyle Orland: I think Sean can handle this one.

Jay Resop:  It's all Sean's fault.  Go blame him.-jay

PenguinMan: We seem to have a Web Page Emergency! Quick! To the Yoshimobile!

EAM: Try right clicking on the link and choosing something like "save as." If that doesn't work its just a dead link.

Luigi128: Lazy programmers

Hi there. As I was stumbling over where to find a perfect picture of Mario - I came across your website and it has been very helpful. There is a cartoon drawing of Mario holding up a peace sign, and I was wondering if I could obtain permision from you to use this drawing. You see, I am the humor editor for the RedBirdWord, which is our school newpaper. Recently I had one of my reporters submit a story about our principal. The story makes him out to be another mario figure - because he is a little italian man with the same characteristics. I would like to use your cartoon as a graphic on my page - if it is possible. Thank you very much for your webpage.
                      Sincerely,
                            Alison Schmidt

Sean Kelly: Yeah use it.  Just make sure you include a link to SMBhq.

Kyle Orland: Hey Alison,

Even though we include many pictures of Mario on our site, we unfortunately do not hold rights to any of them. These rights are wholly owned by Nintendo Co Ltd. and Nintendo of America, and are used on our site in a quasi-legal application of "fair use." You'd have to contact Nintendo at www.nintendo.com and ask them about it, officially.

That being said, it's just a school paper, so I doubt they'd notice or really care.

Jay Resop:  It would help if you could tell us specifically what the image is.  Where it is, the URL of the image, ect.  If it is an official image that was made by Nintendo, then feel free to use it, since it's not ours.  But if it came from our fan art section, then yeah, you may not be able to use it.-jay

PenguinMan: Well, if you found the picture on the Fan Art page (I don't think so, but it's been a while since I've edited it, so it might be there), you'll have to get the permission of the original artist. If it was from the Fan Art page, I'll see what I can do to get you the info.

EAM: I can't really say since I didn't draw it. If I had drawn it, I'd say yes as long as you gave the appropriate credit.

Luigi128: I would think you could, seeing as how SMBHQ doesn't own the rights to Mario... hopefully it shouldn't piss Jay or Kyle off too much...

Dear Mailbag of SMBHQ,
Lately I've been really enjoying the Mario games, and I decided to write a timeline of the games that take place before the Super Mario Bros. era, such as Wrecking Crew, Yoshi's Story etc. I am sincerely asking that you post my timeline up on your site. It is written carefully with no mistakes, and nothing I completely made up. Some things aren't perfectly accurate, but come close or are. Please accept my offer!

E-Mail me back for the timeline if you'd like it!
^$Andrew$^

Sean Kelly: Send it over!  It will be perfect for the SMBhq Era Pages.

Kyle Orland: Hey Andrew. Send it in and it will be given its due consideration.

By the way, have you seen our storyline section (http://www.smbhq.com/history.htm)?

Jay Resop:  Um...ask Sean about it.  Heh.
We need more e-mail talking about how awesome NC is.  Get to work on that.-jay

PenguinMan: Uhh... Sure.

EAM: I don't know what section that would go under, but it wouldn't be game ideas. Don't know.

Luigi128: Saunds interestin', too bad I ain't in charge o' that! (gotta' add my good ol' Arkansas accent in)
