“It's no April Fool! I started this one the day after the March one went up. I am on a roll now! Plus, I think we can look forward to a very eventful summer. I can almost feel it.”
| TOPIC FOR APRIL: “Now that there are only 2 Mario games (7 overall) left in the life of the Nintendo64, do you think it was a real leap in video gaming as we know it? Why?” |
| MY REPLY: “I think so. You have to figure that most games for the PSX that looked like they are 3D were actually in pseudo-3D. I believe the N64 has showed that a game can really be on 3D now, as evident in Super Mario64 and Mario Kart 64. Skipping the 32-bit machines, albeit for the time being with the GBA being 32-bit now, really has helped push the borders of the industry further and has created many more possibilities for the future that we may not know about now. It was a marvelous 5 years, Nintendo.” |

L. Schmidt is looking for her marbles with SMW on them:
| Hello- I have a really simple question for you, or hope that it is..... I own the Super Mario World on Super Nintendo and I have made it up to World 4, Forest of Illusions. I have conquered all the worlds in there, and now i cant figure out where I go next. How do i get started on World 5? Your help is appreciated. |
| Dave: ...if you really did beat all the levels [in the Forest], then why aren't you on Chocolate Island? Take a look at the guides section here. |
Steve: She meant in that world, Dave. Go to
the next-to-last pipe in FoI 3, then grab the key. Mewtwo: Steve, If you keep giving the answers, how will guides get any hits? Steve: I don't know, how? Mewtwo: Forget it. |
| Mike: The Forest of Illusion should be cut down. It's way too confusing... sometimes. But it's a good place to get a lot of 1-Ups! |
The Axem Rangers liking the limelight a little more... especially Green, for some odd reason:
| Dear Dave and Friends, Ahhh.... It feels good to be back on this site again. We're visiting for the first time after the mondo-site-death-thingy that happened a while ago. Well, we know this is kinda late, but we don't giva hoot! We OWN a Sega Dreamcast. Okay, it's not ours, it's our dad's. (That's nothing to be ashamed of!) We also own two Game Boys and a Game Boy Color AND an N64. We love them all. The Game Boys have that old-school charm you can't get anymore. The GBC is GREAT for hand held gaming. And the N64? Multi-player bashes, of course! Games like Poke'mon Stadium, Perfect Dark, Mario Party 2 and Perfect Dark are not to be missed when friends are over. BUT WHY DOES EVERYONE BIAS THEMESELVES AGAINST SEGA????? Sorry, we got carried away. I will NEVER forget Sonic Adventure's ending, even tough it sucked. But I've forgotten Mischif Makers Ending, and I LOVE that game. And I'm not saying SA was a bad game. The ending just wasn't up to par. But did that stop Zelda: 64? NO! I geuss they did do that insulting buildboard thing on PSX2's release date, but OH WELL! Dr. Mario will NEVER hold a candel to Sega Swirld. If Red want's his adreniling pumpin', he's gonna play Speen Highway on SA, or watch some Shenmue cutscenes, not play some dinky Super Mario 64 slide! Sega is DIVERSE! Part genre? Sonic Shuffle? Fighting? The "Vs." series! Shooter? Quake! RPG? Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia. And BTW, we LIKED SONIC R!!! Signed, The Axem Rangers. |
| Dave: I honestly don't know why everyone biases themselves against Sega. Fortunately for me, I got over mine seeing as there was nothing I could do to help them. SM64 IM(NSH)O, is *old!*. Honestly, how many times can you play a level in there until you're absolutely bored with it? 10? 7? 5? Some have that certain thing that makes you come back for more, like in Swirl, but most don't, sadly. |
Steve:Steve: I stopped playing it when I got tired of it. Mewtwo: No, you stopped playing when you broke it in your Gameshark. Steve: Don't tell them that! Mewtwo: Why? |
| Mike: I own a Game Gear, and for a while it was the most played system in my house. Then I was angry at the pile of dead batteries that it made so I put it away. But I liked the games for it. |
Lisa pondering an imponderable:
| in mario dx how do u get koopa troopa battlefield? |
| Dave, as Ricky Ricardo: Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do... |
Steve: Um, uh, well, uh... |
| Mike: I would like to know what you're talking about. If you can do that, maybe I can help... but as of now, I can't! |
Mewtwo: I'll say. |
Jim & Jean coming to the wrong man for something:
| how do you beat the second boss the lizard on spiderman on gameboy color? |
| Dave: This is the "MARIO Mailbag", in case you did not notice. There's a good reason why. |
Steve: Which is? Dave: Steve, now you've gone too far! I'm gonna... (blue aura surrounds him) Steve: Hey! Put me down! Mewtwo: Have a sense of humor, Dave! Dave: Why? You don't! Steve: I'd say he does. (Steve falls down, Dave falls out of chair) Dave: I need to work on my abilities a little more. |
| Mike: I know! I know! You wrap him up in webbing, beat the crap out of him, kill his alligator, and repeat as neccassary. I reccomend being at Level 3 and have collected at least two life-up spider-things. And this is Mario Mailbag, so keep the Spiderman questions away! |
David (I can assure you it wasn't me) replying to the topic, the exception to the rule here:
| The N64 is not a huge leap for Mario, but it was one for nintendo. Mario 64 was mostly just to show us what nintendo can do whith their "amazing" new system, it was more of a way to show off their power then a game. Nes started turtle stomping and flying and fire shooting. Snes introduced yoshi and mario kart, and overall diversity. But N64 only introduced 3D, a big advance but not for all of marios games. Oh, before I forget great site, just update a bit more. Keep up the great work! |
| Dave: I was asking in general, not specifically Mario games. When I say a topic, take it for face value. Not every topic will be related to Mario. |
Steve: I thought this was Mario Mailbag for a reason. Mewtwo: He never said it was a good one. Dave: I make topics exempt from certain rules. I am the dictator of the mailbag, after all. |
| Mike: I agree that most of the Mario games weren't that big a leap. Heck, there's not even ten of them on N64. But it was a big leap for games in general. |
JOE W asking a legit question... almost:
| in super mario bros.3 fer nes, where is the whistle located exactly, all i found was that its in either world 1-2 or 1 fortress. |
| Dave: There are 3 whistles: 1-3: Near the goal card, there is a white block in midair. Squat on that block until you fall behind the scenery. Run to the end of the stage. 1-Fortress: At the end of the first room, stomp the Dry Bones and fly up and over the ceiling to the right. Push right until you can go no farther, then up. 2 Map: On the section of map where the Castle is, there are two Boomerang Bros. One has a hammer. Get the hammer, then break the boulder in the upper-right. Push right and defeat the Fire Bros. to get the whistle. You only need 2 whistles to get to World 8. Get them both in World 1, then use one on the W1 map, and the second on the warp map. Please, check the guides before you come to me with help. You're lucky this time since I almost forgot about them. |
Steve: I may want one of those warp whistles soon. |
| Mike:
The whistles are the cheater's scepter! Back in my day, we walked all
the way to World 8 uphill both ways! And we didn't use any fancy-schmancy
P-Wings either! Dave: Nobody wants to hear about the good old days, Cranky! |
Mewtwo: I can see why. |
Bill, I mean Kevin, asks something previously answered:
| First my name is Kevin and I was wondering if well.............. can I join your staff? OK so I am being weird but please? p.s. if it says [on the From line] bill it means kevin KEVIN!!!! |
| Dave: Let me say very simply: No! If, and only if, Mike P. were to step down from his position here at the Mailbag, I will get a new co-host. I don't plan on getting rid of Mike P. any time soon, either, <Mr. Mackey> mmmkay? </Mr. Mackey> |
Steve: Four is enough. Mewtwo: I thought 8 was. Steve: Never mind. Dave: It doesn't matter how many is enough, we're all too close for comfort! |
| Mike: And I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. I feel special now... Thanks Dave. |
Teresa has a fuzzy memory, but a valid point:
| Hey yesterday I went to ames and they had a game called super mario bros..........but this game only had mario and was on a mini gameboy. So it said try me on the box and I did play it and then it was totally strange mario could only jump and there was no enemys expect this weird looking bowser. It was on all four legs and it had hair and you could only fight it at the end of the stage. So what I am trying to say is have you ever played or seen this game? |
| Dave: Yes, I have, but there's no Bowser on there, and Mario can move around the screen. It's a remake of the old Game & Watch game. I have seen two other Mario-related G&W remakes at a local Target, "Mario's Cement Factory" and "Donkey Kong Jr.". I don't know if all of them will be released again, but I have it and I can't get past World 3. (Note to those who don't know about this game: there are 8 levels per world, and points are scored by distance covered, not time left) |
Steve: I own an original one...somewhere. |
| Mike: Game & Watch thingys are fun. They bring back what makes most gaming great: Simple plot and play control. Of course, I still like a challenge every once in a while, but I like those simple games. And I think you can get "Mario's Cement Factory" and "Donkey Kong Jr.", plus "Donkey Kong" Game and Watch remakes on the "Game & Watch Gallery" games. |
Mewtwo: Who cares? You lost the battery cover to it anyway. |
| TOPIC FOR MAY: “Mario Party 3 debuts this month. Speaking of parties, what is your favorite game (video game or otherwise) to play at a party and why?” |
“April showers bring May flowers, and May flowers bring me to the air conditioning. Claritin has met its match!”
