Mario Mailbag!

December2000

“It's really January when I'm doing this... okay, the 26th, but I'm busy. Just think what will happen when I'm in college... when I'm in college. Anyway, January's topic is at the bottom, as usual.”

GameBoy2001 looks into his crystal ball... or maybe not:

okay here are a few questions for u
1.in pokemon gold at the title screen if u hit certin boutons (i think down, slecet,b), this thing comes up that lets u change the time but u need a password. whats the pass or where can i get it?
2.as for the topic a good vedio game for luigi would be base on the evil luigi story comic by jay, only insted of mario being good one luigi is but mario is evil! and the game cube award goes to................MMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
3.do u think the gamecube well be better than ps2?and do u think it looks better than ps2?when i saw i started to cry!and well it have the same stuff as ps2 and dreamcast (conection to the net, very sweet graphics time features)?
4.well gameboy adavnce play older gameboy games? it dosen't look like it dose.

Dave:
1. Steve, catch!
2. I don't know. Maybe Jay will have something to say. (ed. Turns out he didn't. If he did, I don't remember it.)
3. It's kinda hard to compare the PS2 and NGC. Both have sweet graphics, but I think PS2 may take the NGC for a great run when they're both on the American market.
4. Gameboy Advance (AGB) will be fully compatible with every GB and GBC on the market today and to come with no special adapter necessary. It will even plug into the NGC!
Steve:
1. Go to VGF member www.pokemasters.com has all the details.
2. Evil Mario...
3. Yes, and isn't everything? Except Mewtwo...
4. It will
Mewtwo:
What?

Shohoku is re-living the glory days of the SNES:

Hello Dave
Recently dug out SMW on SNES to relive the old days. Well, my highest record in the score is 94. And I've seen guides on sites and cartridges from other people that the full score is 96. I know it will be hard without actually looking at it, but what am I likely missing? I've been trying very hard to find out how to get the last 2 points. But I really can't figure it out. I've gone through all the levels along the way, the swtich palaces, all the star roads (including the ones from the "real world" that connects to them like Soda Lake), all the Special World levels and changed the scenary into the Autumn scene with Masked Koopas and Pidget Bills. I am kind of frustrated at this, could you help?
Also, I've heard that you can revert the world back to normal even after the change from the completion of the Special Worlds, can it be done? If so, how? (I mean, looking at Masked Koopas are fun, but want a change sometimes too).
Please help,
Thank you for your time.

Dave:
Okay, now the possible things wrong with your level score is the Forest Ghost House secret exit (to Forest of Illusion 1), the Choco Island 3 standard exit (to Choco Island 3, that is not a typo.), and the Star World 5 standard exit (to Star Road 1). Other than that, I don't really know how to help you.
Unfortunately, there is no way to revert Dinosaur Land back to summertime. No way possible. You know, I miss those Koopa Troopas and Bullet Bills now.
Steve:
Pretty much covers it.
Mewtwo:
Yep.

Chris B really goes back to the old school for this one:

Dear Sirs
I know that you are probably laughing at somebody asking a question about SMB, but this is valid. Is there any truth to the rumor of "minus worlds". If so, could you please tell me how to find them. If you're not familiar with this term I would be happy to explain.

Dave:
Ah, yes. The Minus World. Break the second and third blocks from the exit pipe in 1-2. Jump and go through the single block by facing left and pressing right. Jump in the first pipe for an infinite expanse of water. This only works in the original Super Mario Bros. for NES, unfortunately.
Steve:
I could never make it work.
Mewtwo:
Well, I never even tried.

From the Axem Rangers:

Dear Dave,
Sorry about that "Dan" thing last month. I just screwed up typing. Oh yeah, I want to give a big hello to Mewtwo! Hi Mewtwo! You were awesome in your movie! Too bad the whole thing stunk like Smithy's socks! Now that I've gotten that rant out of the way...
I don't care that all game starring MARIO have the same storylines, the people at Nintendo need to cook up somthing special for Luigi. I imagine the game starts out with Mario & Luigi in the Mushroom Kingdom doing plumbing work on Princess Toadstool's bathroom, when they get sucked into the pipes! You see a short cutscene with a first-person view of the brothers going down the pipes. (Insert "Fairy Flying" music from Zelda here.)
The two brothers fall out of the pipe, and they are in a deserted house. Suddenly, there is a flash of yellow and purpule, and Mario dissapears. "Wario! I'm-a gonna ween!" you hear. Then, Luigi is pushed back into a large room by Waluigi and the doors are locked. Then, the player must find a way to get out of the room.
The first world will be the Mansion, and you will go on many other worlds, trying to catch up to Wario and the new enemy, Waluigi. There would be actual levels, and they would be 3-D sidescrolling. But, borrowing from Geomon's Great Adventure, ther would be a main, 3-D movement overworld. Does that all sound good?

Dave:
It's a shame Nintendo isn't accepting game ideas. That sounds great right there. Unfortunately, Mr. Miyamoto says Luigi will have a "cool attitude about things." He won't be afraid to let Mario shine in the spotlight. We all know BOTVGH will have a field day with that (Shameless plug: http://www.geocities.com/hcuz -- check it out!). I'd like to see what Jay thinks about your idea.
Steve: Interesting. How about a cross between SMB2 and WL3!
Mewtwo: This guy likes me! Steve, he really like me.
Steve: Yay.
Dave: You don't seem too happy for your friend, here. Trust me, he wants it all, and wants it his way. You should know that by now. <eyes start glowing>
Jay Resop:
Sounds interesting.  We need to see more of Luigi, Waluigi and Wario.

They strike again with this letter, but this is a very good one, indeed:

Dear Dave,
I am here speaking for thousands of people, including a few I know personally. I was dismayed that Earthbound 2 for the SNES wouldn't be released in America. I was ever more so when Iearned that there was an NES Earthbound that was also never released in America.
But this cuts the cake! One of the reasons I wanted an N64 was because I had heard of an awesome RPG called "Earthbound 64." It one one of the lesser reasons, but it was still one of them. Now this masterpiece of a game has been canceled. Has anyone noticed that all the old, good videogame sieris are fading?
Look at it. Now, Mario is just a ploy and a release title. Sure, I like Mario party as much as the next robot, but come on, it's not a real Mario game! The Mario element just adds to the normal fun of the concept! Two other former showstoppers, Earthbound and Metroid are dissapearing. What is next, Zelda!??
And it is happening to ALL companys. Sega has but TWO sonic games, one of them is a luanch title, and one of them is a Mario Party clone! SONY has done a good job keeping Crash alive with real games, but the last two games he is in are A Mario Party clone and a kart racer.
If you are still reading, you might get my point. Newly created characters are destroying the market for tride-and-true characters. Look at this! Because of lack of intrest because it is on PC, Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine will ONLY be sold over the internet.
So please, put this letter up. I don't care what month, just put it up. And if you would like, post my e-mail. Then people can contact me about the subject. I want the e-mail adress up, but it is your choice. So do any of you agree with me? I hope you do.

              Singed,
                     Axem Rangers <scinsboy@aol.com>

Dave:
::Applauds:: I could not have said it better. I will reply to this one as to what I know right now. Metroid for the Cube has been accidentally confirmed by a third-party developer, so Samus isn't dead yet. Also, a moment of silence for the game Earthbound. ::quiet for a few seconds:: now, the mastermind is in line for developing on the Cube. We can only hope one will be Earthbound3 or something similar in title. I'm also inclined to think that Mario is pretty much setting the standard for platform games involving one character rescuing another and beating the bad guy. As you take a look at what Mario, Sonic, and Crash all do, that's it.
It's more along the lines of how the originality is portrayed, because genius is only 1% inspiration and 99% blood, sweat, and tears. Speaking of BS&T, I'll listen to SW N-O-W... ::puts on headphones and lip-synchs to "Spinning Wheel"::
Steve:
I'd have to disagree with you completely. Nintendo would be dead if Mario hadn't been around. Pokémon alone cannot sell a system (it comes close, but other games must exist).
Mewtwo: I recuse myself from this question.
Steve: And they say I watch too much election coverage...
Dave: Remember, your personalities come off on the Pokémon you capture. Professor Oak even said that. So, in essence, you DID watch too much of the election.

Alan, Alan, Alan... Remember my thing with HTML in the letter?

<DIV>Hi, do you have any idea how I can get to the Special World in Super Mario World? (SNES) I've completed 84 levels so far and I'm eager to try the others. Any advice?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Thanks</DIV>

Dave:
Time for a reminder of how irked I am at getting HTML messages in my mailbox. If you know how to get rid of it, PLEASE DO!!!
Also, please check the game guide section (www.smbhq.com/users/guides/a-zindex.htm) to see if your question can be answered in there if you have a question about a particular game (except for glitches, i.e. Minus World in SMB1. For that, scroll up). Your question can be answered in the game guide section. Period. I checked it out for myself and it's pretty clear.
Steve:
Oy.
Mewtwo:
You said it.

TOPIC FOR JANUARY:
Since it's January, what would a character from the Mario universe resolve for the new year, and why?”

“Stay Tuned for more idiots, fools and people with simple minds, all in the next Mailbag!”
