Mario Mailbag!

October& November2000

"Since there are so few in the October issue, I have decided to combine the October and November issues together. I'm taking time out of sleeping to do this!"

"Oops... looks like my haste got the better of me. In trying to get as up-to-date as I possibly could, I made a slight error and just uploaded a blank. Here's the real thing, and I'm not talking Coca-Cola."

First from Dimitri:

I heard that they are coming out with a Super Mario RPG 2 for N64 (I think). If this is true can you please give me some information about it.

Dave:
This has been floating around for what feels like a year, and it's already out in Japan now as Mario Story. In the USA it will be released next year under the name "Paper Mario". Look at the Mushroom Kingdom for a preview.
Steve:
Sounds like some sort of origami deal.
Mewtwo:
There's actually a Pokémon origami book.

Slickracer in car #5 coming across the finish with this:

Hey There, Mario Maniacs. Some gaming mag said that you could use a difficult wall kick/slide move to get to the top of the castle without the cannon. Well, it worked, but.... Yoshi wasnt at the top, as they promised. Is there a more secure way to meet the dino? Also, are there any button codes for SM64 or DK64? Thanks.

1.

Dave:
Yeah, find all 120 stars and Yoshi will be waiting.

SM64: absolutely none.

For DK64, I will defer to Steve for that.

2.

Steve:I don't think there are any.

Mewtwo: But there are a zillion for Pokémon Puzzle League! Try going to the 2-Player character select, holding Z, and pressing B, Up, L, B, A, Start, A, Up, R.
Steve: Wait a second...that's the code that lets players fight you!
Mewtwo: You're just jealous because you can't beat me!
Steve: I would have, if not for that stupid move back rule!
Mewtwo: Are you saying Gary battle two is too hard for you?
Steve: I oughta...
Audience: Da-ave! Da-ave! Da-ave! Da-ave!
3.

Dave: And we'll be back with another letter after Mewtwo does something nasty to Steve!

(immediate cut to black, Steve is heard being slammed around then from nowhere Mewtwo collapses)

Trust me, you did not want to see that.

Mario Mom comes with desperate plea for help:

Hello. My husband and I and our two kids are all BIG Mario fans!! So much that we are trying to help our son dress as Mario for Halloween and his costume contest at school. I am putting together the costume myself without too much trouble. Except that I cannot find a red cap that looks right. I need some advice on what kind of cap Mario wears....We are trying to be authentic, if possible. I have not seen a Mario cap for sale anywhere..... Please email me with any suggestions or information........ We love this website!!

Dave:
Well, I may as well call you Mrs. Mario. The best kind of cap is a homemade one, indeed. What you need is a red cap like the red on the Phillies cap. That's the best color red. If you can find that color red without the "P" in the middle, you'll do even better. If you can't, you'll need to get out the "stitch breaker" thingy to get rid of it. Also, you'll need a piece of white felt and a piece of red felt, approx. 1.5" x 2" for each. You should know what to do from there.
If I were to do that with _my_ Phillies cap, I'd wind up being Luigi ... which isn't so bad for me.
Steve:
The things you learn...
Mewtwo:
Stitch breaker thingy? Boy, we're technical, aren't we?

Ryan is asking something a little obvious:

Hi I was wondering if you have a clear picture of toad, I think his name is toad, the little mushroom headed guy. Well if you do could you please send it to twiztid_fighter@fightlink.com and/or stard@govital.net Thanks and sorry for any and all inconvinences.

Dave:
I don't do picture requests. Period.

There must be at least 120 Mario sites that have pictures.
Steve: Me neither.
Mewtwo: I, on the other hand...
Steve: No.
Mewtwo: What?
Steve: If people want a picture of you, they can walk about 10 feet.
Mewtwo: Oh. Right.

Levaboy has something on his mind:

In Super Mario Bros Deluxe for Gameboy Color, you can earn the lost levels (Super Mario Bros for Super Players). How do get past world 8-2 and 8-3? I would greatly appreciate it if you answered my question.

Dave:
I tried to look up a good FAQ for you, I really did. Unfortunately, there was none. Right now, I am a bit lazy to look up my guide.
Steve:
Count yourself lucky, I have my Super Mario All-Stars guide (Same game, different system). In 8-2, you must bounce off a paratroopa to make a vine appear. In 8-3, there are two invisible blocks near the end (beware, one has a poisonous mushroom)!
Mewtwo: Where would you be without your guides?
Steve: In front of the TV.

Last, but certainly not least, Mike P. sends his 33 cents to Luigi's storyline:

First of all, the storyline should have absolutely nothing to do with rescuing a Princess. I think it's been used before. I like the idea of Luigi inheriting a big haunted house. The ghosts and monsters and stuff would have escaped from some kind of spectral cage, and in order for Luigi to put them back in, he'd have to gather a lot of pieces of the cage. And Mario shouldn't be in it.
Oh, and I have a question for you: Where's the Shortcut in Super Mario 64's Slip Slidin' Away? I think I know, but I want to make sure.
And tell Steve to calm down about Mario's criminal acts against Wario. It was a kind of... revenge for stealing Mario's castle.

Dave:
Wow. Maybe you should go to work for Nintendo of Japan in the storyline department. Am I right, Jay? The shortcut in the ice slide is where the 5 coins are pointing towards the wall. The wall there is fake.
Steve, Mario was just getting back at Wario for stealing his castle. You know what they say, paybacks are a [bleep].
Steve:
No, Mario should have pursued his grievances in Mushroom Kingdom Court.
Dave:
Puh-lease! It's not like that in their world.
Mewtwo:
You really need to stop combining logic and video games.

"Okay, maybe one of these days, I'll get one out on time."
