Mario Mailbag!

September2000

"Yikes... I really managed to do this page in really good, didn't I? School, unfortunately, is inducing hibernation in me. Also, even though I choose to do this in a web page generator, it still takes me about an hour or more to put these things together. If you knew more about my position, you'd be understanding it, too. Let's get to the stuff before I get tireder..."

Remember: Top > Bottom, Left > Right

JTanner put me in-quisition of this question:

Well, since I know that you know a lot of Mario64, can you tell me anything why Luigi was taken out of there?? I was looking on TMK, and it said that Luigi was supposed to be in it. Hey, also my other question is why does Nintendo and Sega go competition together?? I read in ClassicGaming's newest Mailbag that Sony already BEAT both of them in a different country. Why don't they just combine Dreamcast and StarCube*?? I like both of them... Sonic rulez and Mario is WONDERFUL!! They both have equal games in my opinion. Why did you make fun of SegaSaturn? I LOVE that System!! Please don't put this in Haul of Shames??

(*remember, StarCube was the name contemplated at the time the mail was read, ed)

Dave:
Number one, why Luigi was taken out of Mario 64 is beyond me.
Number two, why should that happen? Everyone has their different opinion as to whose games are best and everything would remain the way it is ... besides, another 5 years would be necessary to combine the two systems so they're compatible, if not one, with each other.
Number three, Saturn was dead before it came out. Case closed.
Number four, [censored due to stupidity]
Steve:
Luigi was taken out due to some camera problem.
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Though considering Zelda 64...

Nathan places this beaut on the table:

O.k. now,This may not be much of a Mario Related game, but maybe you can help me. In Donkey Kong64 for Nintendo64 how many golden Banannas are there?

Dave:
My guess is 201. Steve?
(Remember, I don't have DK64)
Steve (impersonating Jim Perry from Card Sharks): The actual number of Golden Bananas in DK64 is...201! All right, Dave your base card is... a QUEEN!
Dave: LOWER!
Frank:
(uh-oh... I don't think Frank's doing too well...)
Mewtwo: No more Game Show Network for you, pal.
Steve: Wait. Dave doesn't have cable anyway.
Dave: Doesn't mean I don't know Card Sharks. I even got the theme to it. :-D

Daniel has a much easier one, though:

Hi. This is not a trivia question. But, a question I am just plainly asking. Okay, in Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island, who is the character that is green and comes out of cannons - is that Bullet Bill? I never define Bullet Bill as being a green deadly projectile, but a black one. Who IS that bullet? (Missile Bill is red, though).

Dave:
I don't have the official guide, but I think it is Bullet Bill. You never can be sure in those prequel/sequels.
Steve:
According to the official player's guide, that is the correct name.
Frank:
(I'm running out of things for Frank to say, even though he can only say 6 basic words... ack!)
Mewtwo: What caliber?
Steve: Oh, shut up!

This one just... judge for yourself:

Gwa ha ha. You dint think i was gone did ya? It is I wart! I moved to hyrule and joined a music group! Oh my song is the froggy song of soul! I helped this young man and taught him the song on his Orcrana. If you wanna find me go to the sign maze. (True story in Legend Of Zelda Links Awakening! Game boy)

Dave:
Okay, that does it! Steve, you and Mewtwo take the next one.
Steve: Why don't you take this one, Mewtwo?
Mewtwo: Actually, I was thinking of giving it to Frank.
Frank: RIGHT!... DOUBLE NO!
Frank:
RIGHT!

Note: Frank has decided to quit for personal reasons (i.e. I ran out of ideas for him to say stuff). The vote for my co-host will be placed on the front page sometime in January.

From Karson komes, er, comes this:

ok i'm not disagreeing here that bowser's name isn't king bowser koopa but in mario 3 one of the kids name is morton koopa JR there must be a senior and since all the signs lead you to assume they are bower's children shouldn't bowser's real name be king morton bowser koopa?

Dave:
Nintendo Power got a letter very similar to that...and unfortunately when we went to Bowser's castle, the NP crew was running away from Bowser's bad breath. Needless to say, I turned around and hauled my [bleep] outta there! There goes our Web-G rating again.
Steve: Who really cares?
Mewtwo: Not me.
Steve: If I got a dollar for every time you cared about something, I'd have 38 cents.

Matthew raises a FAQ:

I beat every single thing on the game, i even checked the levels from your website like 3 times to make sure, but i only have a 95 i don't know why i can't get a 96.

Dave:
Most likely it's the an exit to the Forest Ghost House. If it's not that, it's Chocolate Island 3... that loop does count as an exit!
FOREST GHOST HOUSE: Survive the narrow passageway full of ghosts and take the door all the way to the right of the first area. In the second area, GRAB the P-Switch and take it PAST the visible door in that same area. Once you hit the floor of the little section with no door (below the coins), hit the P-Switch and go through the blue door near the end of that area. You should wind up above the ghost corridor. Take the first door to your left for the main way out (Forest of Illusion 4), take Door #2 for the secret exit (Forest of Illusion 1) and a 3-up moon.
CHOCOLATE ISLAND 3: Take the first exit at the end (Chocolate Island 3).
If neither of them help, I don't know how to do so.
Steve:
Additionally, you may have forgotten one of the normal Star World exits.
Mewtwo:
Perhaps a checklist would have helped...

marken6766 wonders how many courses there are in Super Mario World.

Dave:
It's not 96, I can tell you that much off the top of my head.
Let's see...carry the 5, find the curvature of the parabola between -1 and i, take the 5th root of 1 and square it...okay, and double check with the game...
That comes to 75 courses and 96 exits. Thank you, have a nice day!
Steve: No, Dave, there are 72 courses.
Mewtwo: It depends on how you define course...
Steve: Ugh.
Mewtwo: What?

Thomas needs to know:

in SMW for SNES, I can't get past forest of illusion. I know in the 3rd section of this world, there is a pipe at the end which you must go down. However, when i go down it, the keyhole is covered on the top by a bunch of yellow blocks, thus preventing my entrance. What do I do about this?

Dave:
You need to be Super Mario or higher on the hierarchy of powers in order to break the yellow blocks...or, if you have Yoshi, you will be able to use him even though he has no "spin jump" per se. I'm not taking the time right now to find out since it's getting late for me.
BTW, on an X-bar (Statistics humor), did someone declare September 'Worldwide Super Mario World Month' without me knowing?
Steve:
This is why you need to come to staff meetings, Dave.
Mewtwo: Really.
Dave: What staff meeting?
Mewtwo: Note to Kyle, send Dave the staff meeting chart.

Colin wishes this of me:

i have a question for you
1) super mario world - super nes
q: in the valley of bowser the 2nd board the one before the valley fortress i know it says it in your guide but i still dont understand how to beat it the secret way
q: also i would like to know wat the number in front of the file is for and wat happens if u get to 100 thank you for your time.

p.s. im glad im gettin in touch with my super nes roots and ur helpin me so thanks!

Dave:
1: Get through the moving yellow passage section (The one which opens with the Yoshi Wings in the block), enter the pipe at the end and when you enter the next area, move so you are not under any ceiling but still on the high plateau. Go left to the key and hole and enter. *BE WARNED!* The Valley Fortress is hard, but the payoff is you never have to go through it again unless you want to.
2: The number in front of the file is the number of exits you have completed. If you actually do get a 100, send me a photo. Reason: It's impossible. The high number is 96, and if you have the English version, you will have a star in front.
Steve:
That stage is tough...except for people with crazy levitation powers.
Mewtwo: What?
Dave: Not so. (brings out Game Genie)

Hey hey, we're the Monkees... okay, so we're not. But, that doesn't me we're not talented. (shot of Mewtwo plinking guitar and Steve singing off-key) Okay, so we're talented in something else. Please keep those letters coming in!
