Mario Mailbag!

August2000

"Okay, I'll admit it, I neglected the page... but what am I going to do? I need my space as well, especially after what happened (but don't ask, all requests will be ignored). I had to drop my Spanish I class for personal reasons, plus I couldn't handle the workload. Anyhoo, now that I've given you my life story now..."

Remember: Read Top>Bottom, Left>Right

Nic inquires:

I was wounder why you dont talk about these only in japan games on your site
Super Wonderful Mario (i own)
SUper mario USA (I have only seen one copy)
Super mario Family (6 mario games on on cart)

Dave:
Well, for one thing, I haven't heard of the first or last (unless Mario Family is All Stars + World), but SMUSA is what we Americans call Super Mario Bros. 2. And that we *do* talk about, be it good or bad.
Steve:
And I thought Paper Mario Story was a bad name...
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Perhaps we don't talk about them because we haven't played them...

Nathan ponders:

Um...How do I beat Level#2 Tubulalar,Specail World in Super Mario World for Super N.E.S.?

Dave:
>Tubular< (note spelling) is a rather airy course, as most have seen. I'll give out the locations of where the balloon boxes are, but then you're on your own
1: Block under P-Switch
2: Block before Parakoopas
3: Block under first kicking Chuck
Steve:
Also, readers of the Mario Mania player's guide know you can use a blue Yoshi to fly.
Frank:
WOW!
Mewtwo:
Honestly, where did these names come from?

From the mind of... well, somebody:

why is it that luigi is not in most of the smb games

Dave:
Let me get back to you later on that one... MUCH later!
Steve:
Is this really true...well...all console (non-GB) platform games from SMB onward...
With Luigi (in game): SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMW, SMW2 (not playable)
Without Luigi: SM64
Hm...
Frank:
OW!
Mewtwo:
You need help.

And another questioning this:

are mario,luigi,wario,and waluigi all related?

Dave:
(puts on swami hat) I will enlighten all who seek the answer to this puzzling question. The ones whose letters are right side up are brothers, the ones whose letters are upside down are brothers, and the ones whose letters are right side up are the cousins of those whose letters are upside-down. Next time, be sure to hit the blank button on the keyboard after hitting the low apostrophe key to make for easier reading. (takes off swami hat)
And if you didn't understand it, tough.
Steve:
And tomorrow, brothers with letters right side up fight brothers with letters upside down on Jerry Springer.
Frank:
DOUBLE WOW!
Mewtwo:
Why me?

From some guy named Bob:

okay one day i was on a site (for snes) and i saw a sonic the hedge hog game for snes! i was just wondering did nintendo make a sonic the hedge hog game for snes? maybe before sega made sonic there mascot?and when i thought he made it up there was also a rom there?im so confuse......and well you well probly put me in the haul-o-shame for this but i don't care since im a freak named bob anyway.......but how do we know that Smb HQ is Not Area 51? and nintendo is run by greman spy's out to brain wash american with the god of the world Mario? if u think letter desvers to be in the haul o shame then put it in................i have always been a freak named bob with a attiude.........O wait one last question in wrecking crew for nes how come mario wares red and luigi wares red too? why not green?

Dave:
Okay, now is probably the only time I'll ask this... but Mewtwo, give me a Psyshock.
(MEWTWO used PSYSHOCK!)
(Dave screams, falls on floor face down, groans as he gets back up into chair)
A. Okay, now that is a ROM. Someone has figured out how to code a game in the SNES language. That is illegal because it uses two copywritten characters (most likely without permission). Sonic was *NEVER* Nintendo's mascot. What gave you that idea?
B. Actually, we're co-operating in Area 51. That's why there's a Mewtwo.
C. As for the German spy... that was probably a convicted Nazi and was deported. That's why Pokemon is so wild now.
D. I'll think about it.
E. Luigi wasn't coded with the right palette. (whew!)
Steve:
Actually, Luigi's suit was at the cleaners.
Frank:
TRIPLE OW!
Mewtwo: Did one of the aliens tell you that?
Steve: Why, yes!

The futuristic Edman2000x1:

I know that everyone would want to see Super Mario 64 II as a sequel for the hit game SM64. After all the bragging and pleading and not finding Luigi in the first game it made people pretty ticked off. I know that you guys would want to see a sequel for Mario64 too. Don't prove me wrong because after all the Nintendo-based websites I've been to, they always had one section for fake Luigi codes and pics for Mario64. If they made the sequel and stop making the people wait till the Dolphin is out, it would make us, especially me, fell better and more excited.

Dave:
Amen, brother!
Steve:
I know you all miss Luigi, but when you think about it, it doesn't make sense to make a game just to get Luigi.
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Me, on the other hand...

Once again we hear from Nathan:

In Super Mario Bros.3 for N.E.S. how do I get the second whistle?

Dave:
It depends on which whistle you get first.
The actual second whistle is in the World 1 Fortress. Get the leaf at the end of the first area, and then stomp the Dry Bones. Finally, work up the P meter to fly up and over the door. Go to the end of the hidden corridor and push up. Get the chest.
Steve:
For those of you who haven't seen The Wizard (gratuitously hyperlinked).
Frank:
(silence)
Mewtwo:And for those of you who haven't seen Pokémon: The First Movie...
Steve Says: Don't push my luck.

And again...

<DIV>In Super Mario RPG:Legend of the Seven Stars for S.N.E.S. what is the most efective weapon on Mack and how much H.P. &. F.P. does he have?</DIV>

Dave:
Just because I'm lazy, I'm letting you see what a message with HTML looks like to me when I'm forwarding it.
Weakness: Thunder
HP: You got me
FP: I don't give a ****, I beat the game already
Steve:
HP: 480 Attack:22 Defense: 25 M attack: 15 M Def.: 20 Exp: 24 Coins: 10
However, these values are from the SMRPG player's guide, which is highly inaccurate. FP really isn't important, because bosses (Culex aside) rarely run out.
Frank:
DOUBLE OW!
Mewtwo:
He could talk for hours on Super Mario RPG.

One more time!:

Um... Would you agree that the Rainbow Road,Specail Cup in Super Mario Kart for Super N.E.S. is at least 4 times cooler than the one in Mario Kart 64 for Nintendo64?(Not that the one on M.K.64 is boring)

Dave: In actuality, my simplest answer is no. It has to do with the way the track is presented.
Steve: Nap time!
Dave: You see, the way it's set up on SMK that could make you dizzy if you have some motion sickness problems. It's because the tiles are basically different bright colors each tile, and it could to give some people a headache. The way it's set up on Mario Kart 64 is a lot better, since it's a translucent track made up completely of one piece instead of an uncountable number. This way it's a lot less likely to give (at the very least) a headache or stomach problems to those with motion sickness.
Steve: Actually, I think SMK Rainbow Road was a lot more about driving skill. and the MK64 is an endurance race/inter-driver competition.
Mewtwo: I still say you cheated the last time we played!
Steve: I'm just a better driver!
Frank: RIGHT!
Mewtwo: You stay out of this!
Frank:
zzzzzZZZZZzzzzz... (wakes up)

Final encore:

Um... Do you know any specific website or store where I might be able to get the Super Mario World: Cartoon series on video

Dave:
I don't know... but don't bug Ad Sprad about it.
Steve:
Sure, the Steve store, where you send me $1 000 000*, and I give you Mario Cartoons.
Frank:
NO!
Mewtwo:
Actually, the only sure way to get Mario Cartoons is to be a SMBHQ staffer.

Grllawoyer has this to say:

to answer your question, the first sequel title I want to see is SUPER SMASH BROS. 2!!!!!!

Dave:
Yeah, but have you ever wondered how much planning went into the original? That and there's only one Mario Party 3 screen shot out now.
Steve:
Um... enough?
Frank:
WOW!
Mewtwo:
No, I'm not in there!

A lot of big words from ManaSmack:

Hi. I was looking over your Mario Products section. It's a nice little feature; it was fun to reminisce at all of the Mario stuff I used to own. Anyways, as I was daydreaming about the good ol' days, I recalled the Mario tattoos I owned. I looked for them on the page, but I couldn't find them. Why aren't they on the product list? Did you forget about them? Did you not even know about them? I'm surprised because they seemed popular at the time. I even tried to tattoo my pet mouse once. Glad I could help.

Dave:
Kyle (note that I am not he) told me this once, and now I'm going to tell you. The Mario Products section is far from done! Okay?
I have a personal story, but that will remain hidden.
Steve:We're still looking for the Mario coffee pot.
Mewtwo: There's no such product!
Steve: No wonder we never found it!
Frank:
RIGHT!

Jon needs some help here:

I have beaten 89 levels but, I don't know how to get to those 2 tubes in Bowser's Valley, you know the ones at the bottom. and I'm wondering if there really is a secret level in the forest of illusion, in the intersection.and i'm worried that there might be more levels i don't know of. Can you help please?!

Dave:
The ones at the bottom belong to Chocolate Secret... you must be fast in Chocolate Island 2 if you want to get in there (and not even Game Genie can help you out). By fast, I mean within 40 to 50 game seconds or so to clear the first two sections.
The intersection in the Forest is just that - an intersection.
Steve:
Actually, GG does work, but you have to flick it off at a certain time. An aside from the secret forest area (accessed by FoI 4), nothing else.
Frank:
Mewtwo:
And Steve would tell you where that place is...but he's busy.

Peculiar inquiry by KirbyGuy989:

Do you know any place where they still sell the Super Nintendo system (SNES)? I haven't started searching yet but if you know where please tell me. By the way cool site

Dave:
If you haven't searched yet, how can I tell you where to go?
Steve:
Well, Toys R Us or Funcoland are your best bets.
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Or your friends.

The Axem Rangers are calling...

Dear Dan,
I imagine in next year's Spaceworld show, a sequal to Super Mario 64. He came in with the N64, and I want him to go out with the N64. I'm sure for a while, Nintendo will still make 64 games while Dolphin is out, but in the 64's finest hours, Mario will be there.
And this Super Mario 64 2 can't be made by anyone but Mario's offical team. The game must be new, with an innovative plot, and new moves. But I want to see some of the old. I want the Fire Flower. I want Koopas. I want Bowser.
Is this too much too ask? Many people would think so. But then think about what you want in a sequal to a video game. Do you want an update of the original? Or do you want a mix of new, old, and the future? Isn't that the idea of a perfect game?
And as for Mario Kart Advanced and Mario Party 3, I am looking foreward to them both. But, Mario Kart 64 was merely an update of the original version. I want to see new. Mario Party 2 was innovative. That is what a sequel should be.
    Or I might be insane.

Dave:
uhhh... who's Dan?
Mario 64 #2 will most likely never get underway enough to complete it for the N64. It might be for the D/SC (Dolphin/Star Cube). As for Mario Kart Advance, it will have the neat Mode 7 stuff we saw in Super Mario Kart. Mario Party 3 is still a big mystery. Will it have the luck of the number three? We'll find out.
Steve:
Actually, I think he means Dan Rather, and StarCube is not the name of the system itself.

(It was the name contemplated at the time of writing)

Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Sure he does...

Stephen (not Reich) asks:

I was wondering if you knew any place to get a 3d model of mario. i would like to use him in half life or quake or maybe do some funny animations

Dave:
Uh... no clue
Steve:
My computer runs at 33mHz, so no dice.
Frank:
NO!
Mewtwo:
Yet somehow it pushed out the SMBHQ logo...

Time once again for Mike's letter, as it is just about every month...

I think this is what you mean by title sequel... I would like to see another Super Mario Land game starring Mario, not Wario. Speaking of Wario, how do you unlock Wario in Mario Golf GB? Oh, and the topic for June was: "I want to know which game, any game at all, you were disappointed about and why." That's what the Rampage thing was about. And visit my website! http://mikepsucks.cjb.net !!! Please!!!

Dave:
I did not play MG GB, so I can't tell you. And yes, we need another SML game, since there are only 2 SML games compared to 3 WL games. I think that qualifies Wario out of the NC state.
Also, it appears that SOMEONE in particular forgot to read the mailbag topic... his initials are Steven Reich. That's why he said what he said... or he could have drank too much NyQuil again. It happens.
Steve: ANOTHER Mario Land game? ANOTHER Mario Land game? No way! Thankfully, Wario Land 4 is in development for GBA.
Mewtwo: What did Mario ever do to you?
Steve: HE STOLE THE PRINCESS TOADSTOOL STATUE IN WARIO LAND! I'M GONNA....
Mewtwo: Excuse me a second, Dave...
Dave: Take your time, and be sure to record it on tape.
Frank:
DOUBLE OW!

15 minutes later...

Mewtwo: Well, now that I've got Steve calmed down, he says the reason he didn't understand about Rampage was that it just seemed so unusual to be mentioned.
Dave: Which means he didn't read. Maybe I should get my Mew out and guard him.
Mewtwo: You do that.

All in all, a very eclectic mailbag, as they usually are.
