Mario Mailbag!

July2000

"Well, I just found out right before I made this page that SMBHQ.com will be moving to another server. I just hope nothing gets lost when everything gets turned over. Anyway, I'm back, with a college-level Spanish course to conquer for high school credit (don't ya just hate when that happens?). We'll see how that goes, too... But for now, let's just set it and forget it!... er, uhh..."

My next cast member is one that has his own world... literally. From "Frank's World," welcome my favorite person, Frank!

Here's a helpful reading tip for you to keep in mind: When reading the comments, read them top to bottom, left to right.

And now, to the letters! First from scwachamp:

I wanted to know if you know anywhere I can find good info on Kirby
characters from all his games- mostly from Kirby Superstar. I'm a big fan of
Mario and kirby, so if you could help me out I'd be very grateful. thanx,

Dave:
I wish I knew what happened to KHQ... because I have no clue where a good Kirby site is.
Steve:
Forget KHQ, we need to find Carmen Sandiego!
Frank:
WOW!
Mewtwo:
Somebody help me!

Not much of a talker, are you Frank?

Frank: NO!

Let's just move on to Curtis' letter:

Yeah, I know this isn't much of a Mario game, but
maybe you can help me:

I have 200 golden bananas. I can't get the last one.
It's the one in Gloomey Galleon where Diddy has to
swim inside that mechanical fish & break all the
lights before the time runs out. Can you please help?

Dave:
Steve, the ball is in your court.
Steve:
I don't know either, but I'd suggest either Nintendo's site or a player's guide.
Frank:
OW!
Mewtwo:
Or you could just keep on trying.

Next is from NetDinobot:

I have a question about your site How come it's called Neglected Mario
characters if they made so many appearences like maybe a few of your are
Neglected but take a look at Luigi, sure he doesn't have his own Game but
he's made appearence in just about every Mario game that has been made. And
look at Link he's not even a Mario Character, sure they're both made by
NINTENDO, but they only slipped link in Super Mario RPG for that reason and
Mario is in his game but oh well. My point is about 90% of your characters
are not neglected!

Dave:
Ho, boy... I hope Jay takes a look at this one. Hey, Steve... how is the Quasi-Mediocre Adventure coming along?
Steve:
Um, well, because if the characters were too neglected, you wouldn't be interested. As for the Quasi-Mediocre adventure, it's coming along.
Frank:
DOUBLE OW!
Mewtwo:
Besides, it's too hard to make comics with truly neglected characters.

Just so you know, after this one, I went to Jay and he told me to send him all of the NC mail for him to get back to me on.

Now we hear from Laura:

Hey there! I have a very difficult question to ask of you. Is Paper Mario
going to be a N64 game? If not, which one? See, told ya it was a toughie ;)
Oh yeah, ad why the heck was it called "Paper" Mario? Thanx alot.

Dave:
1. Oy... to think what people send me that you don't see...
2. It's called "Paper Mario" because the characters are 2-D... like a drawing on paper.
Steve:
No, it will use Nintendo's new telepathic game console. Anyway, at least its not called Paper Mario story anymore. Can you imagine the odd looks you'll get if you say, "Hey! Look! I got-"
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
I think you'd better stop there.

Real people... real letters... from Judy:

I am looking for Mario videos, any idea where I can find them? I have looked
so many places just to find nothing.

Dave:
I recommend one of two things: search the Internet, or talk to Ad Sprad.
Steve:
Or better yet, go back in time about ten years. By the way, don't bother asking Adam. It's one of the most irritating questions to be asked. Believe me, I know.
Frank:
NO!
Mewtwo:
Bitter, are we?

Now from Adriano:

Where is the super mario 64 show going to air.

Dave:
*sigh*... That is what we call a fan-created show.
*sirens going off* Hey, what the...?! Oh, yeah! I have now been confused for EVERY staff member on SMBHQ more than once!
::screams hysterically while running down the street::
Steve:
Actually, we're working on a way to use Mewtwo's psychic powers to broadcast the show, but the FCC won't let us.
Frank:
TRIPLE OW!
Mewtwo:
And if you believe that...

Once again! It's time for Mike's corner:

I played Rampage: World Tour for the N64 and beat it within a few hours. So
easy... I also have a question: In Mario Party 2, how do you unlock Bowser
Land and the hidden minigames?

Dave:
Bowser Land is unlocked by playing each board once, and the hidden minigames are unlocked by playing and paying. Okay, I'll be more specific.
Battle Mini-Games are unlocked by beating the Hard Mini-Game Coaster, while Item Mini-Games are unlocked by completing the Normal Mini-Game Coaster.
Steve:
What does Rampage have to do with us?
Frank:
WOW!
Mewtwo:
Yeah, get your own soapbox!

And now, an idiot by the name of jared456:

I found an interesting glitch in SM64 that is very similar to the original Minus World. I found this when I was exploring the castle after I met Yoshi. I somehow found a way to fall from the very top of the castle (As high as you can reach) INTO the castle. (ed: yadda yadda yadda, insert procedure and miscellaneous comments here)

Dave:
This trick has been discovered before... check TMK's SM64 Bugs & Glitches page, under "Inside the Castle Wall".
Steve:
Or just about anywhere else.
Frank:
OW!
Mewtwo:
Another person passing off old info as new.

Now, from Dagger1284:

I finally beat Super Mario Bros. for the NES. I got to the end and the screen
said your quest is over press B to choose world
or something like that. Anyway, I pressed B and it sent me back to the title
screen!!! Is this what's supposed to happen or did I mess up?

Dave:
What you do is you press B on the title screen and watch the "World" display... [additional comment censored due to insult]
Steve:
Dave, that [comment was] rude. A lot of people don't know these sorts of things, especially when you consider that SMB is the shortest of all the endings by far. Yes, you are supposed to go to the title screen again.
Frank:
DOUBLE OW!
Mewtwo:
I'm agreeing with Steve [about the censored comment].

And now we hear from Avery:

hmmm...one title that could have been improved is...DONKEY KONG 64!!
that game is long as (heck)!!! i mean, im not saying that im not up for
a good challenge, but people have other things to do besides spend all
their time looking for bananas, oranges, coins, secrets and who knows
what else!! and for each character?? im not even FINISHED with the game;
i got it for christmas. bottom line: challenges can be fun, but there
are limits. man, when they said the game needed the expansion pack, they
really meant it!

oh and another thing...mario golf. fun, but some unneccesary characters.
why put baby mario AND grown mario in the same game? unless there is
some sorta rip in time, it makes no sense for mario to be playing golf
against himself. and what did they do to wario's face?? he looks more
like luigi with a pink nose, his head is so squeezed in.

Dave:
I'll agree with you on the DK64 game... wwwwaaaaaaaayyyy too much shtuff to do.
Mario Golf, on the other hand, had too many secret characters. YOU HEAR THAT, CAMELOT?! TOO MANY HIDDEN CHARACTERS TO BEAT! That's why I didn't buy it. Also, I thought the idea of having Mario and Baby Mario was... different. Maybe once I get the GameShark Pro I'll get that and Mario Tennis.
As for Wario, he looked fine to me.
Steve:
Don't kid yourself, Dave. Wario never looks fine.
Frank:
WOW!
Mewtwo:
Really.

We go to Nathan now:

Um... On Super Mario 64 for N.64 how do you beat the Tower of The Wing Cap
course?(To get the Wing Cap?)

Dave:
...I'm STILL waiting for that great question. Just step on the red switch in the middle of the tower. Oy! Is that so hard?!
Steve:
Well, some people don't read the directions, you know.
Frank:
NO!
Mewtwo:
Nobody reads those read-me files that come with programs, either.
(Dave: How did you know I don't do that?!)

Topic-related mail from Julie:

I was kind of dissapointed with Kirby64, for one reason it was so easy. It
was also way to short, I finished the game to fast. None of the bosses
were not even the least bit challenging. But my main dissapointment was that
in Kirby's Dreamland3 they had a male painter who I thought was really cool.
But in 64, they booted him out and brought out a little girl who dresses like
him and has a very short hair cut that looks like a boy. I thought she could
be gay.I wonder what the boy would think if he wer'e real and knew that the
creators didn't want him anymore. I would be pissed. Anyways the things I did
like about that game were that you could create awsome combos and the
graphics I thought were pretty good. Oh another thing, King Dedede has never
looked better. By the way on the bios you do, do you think you could do
one on Dedede? I would really appreciate it!

Dave:
#1... My theory is that the *artist* just changed his name from Ado to Adeline, even though I still keep calling the *artist* Ado. (NOT painter! Those are two different jobs!)
#2... I AM NOT JAY RESOP!!! I AM JUST THE MAILBAG PERSON. I'm not even related to Jay, so there.
#3... I'm sick and tired of editing the HTML messages into plain text. Just try not to send messages as HTML. If you don't know how not to, I'm not going to be giving advice on how to, as I have no life whatsoever outside this computer, and there's other things I'd rather be doing than giving out tech support for free.
Steve:
Conversely, I'd like to talk about a very had game: DK GB. You practically have to be in a state of mind to play it.

Mewtwo:
Idaho, right?
Jay:
A King Dedede bio, eh? Since I already have a Kirby Bio, a King Dedede one would make sence. The next time I have a chance to start a bio, I'll concider doing it on the Dedede-man. Thanks for the idea.
Steve:
For once, somone else made a bad joke!

Mewtwo:
I'm working on it!

And now we take a listen in to Susan's thoughts...:

Where can I find a Mario costume for my 5 year old son for halloween?
Please if you can help please contact me at [e-mail censored].

Dave:
Susan, there's probably one on eBay, but I have no clue where to look. If all else fails, make one up! Red sweatshirt and hat, some felt for the white circle and "M" on the hat, pair of jean overalls (blue, of course), and some black makeup for the moustache. Gloves optional, but look better. And now you know what I dressed up as on one particular Halloween. Nothing like a homemade costume. I would love to go as Luigi now, but I digress.
Steve:
Yeah, you should probably make one from scratch. The only hard part would be the hat.
Frank:
DOUBLE WOW!
Mewtwo:
Ha! I can go as myself for Halloween!

Dave:
I'm no psychic, but I can just see the little kids... screaming and running!

And now back to the topic we go with Dinobot743:

The game I was most dissapointed about was Mario Party 2. For some reason,
the game didn't feel like a Mario Party game. It was dissapointing. The
boards weren't as fun, Bowser wasn't on them, The Bowser spaces didn't even
give you a chance to save your coins and the mini-games definitly weren't as
fun (Most were fustrating) I also have a question. I have heard rumors of a
Super Smash Bros. 2. Do you know anything about it?

Dave:
(screams like a girl) HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT MP2!!! #1, Bowser could be on them if you got a Bowser Bomb (which I don't recommend, but if you pick DK as a computer that's your fault, hint, hint...) #2, They did give you a chance to save your coins. Ever see the yellow events on the Bowser Roulette? And #3, there were a lot of Mini-Games that were fun to play with.
As for Smash 2, I haven't heard anything from IGN or Backwire, so I can't tell you.
Steve:
Backwire? In any event, a SSB 2 at some point is probably a good bet.
Frank:
TRIPLE OW!
Mewtwo:
And I'd better be in it!

Dave: (ROFLMAO)
Don't make me laugh!

We hear now from Ed:

Hi, I just finished the special zone and entered the star road teleport in
the end. Now, it is "Autumn" in SMW and I was just wondering if there was
anyway to go back the the normal world. Thanks a lot.

Dave:
I said it once, I said it a million times before. HUG YOUR GRAMMAR CHECKER!
There is. It's called "Erase Data". Sad, but true... no way out unless you delete the entire file.
Steve:
Alternately, you could try adjusting your TV's tint.
Frank:
OW!
Mewtwo:
And have Mario be green!

And the most inner of thoughts from James (not that one) comes:

When does Mario find the time to boogie

Dave:
Whenever the episode's author at BOTVGH says he has time to boogie.
Steve:
Now that we've established that, we can get onto serious matters, like what the "degauss" option does!
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Um, sure...

From the innermost deepths to the outermost with Caleb:

I have a question that almost needs to not be asked, but here goes...
I have a friend, who by the way is a pathological liar (that is why I said
that this needs not to be asked), who gave me this load of crap about that in
SMB 1 on level 1-2 if you go into the warp zone backwards (with your back
facing the warp zone, that is) you get to a secret water level and then wind up
on level 8-4. When I said that I would test this on SMB DX for Game Boy,
he got all hot and bothered, telling me "oh no no no it'll only work on the
original" and how he was the only one in his whole family who ever got it to
work. I just wanted to see if anyone else has heard of this. Does this sound
familliar at all to you? I really think that he is lying, but as always, I am
skeptical on both sides of the matter.

Dave:
Actually, your friend was right about two things. You can go down the first warp pipe and it will take you to the ever-dreaded "Minus World." I say ever-dreaded because you can never get out, even with the Game Genie set to infinite time. And, it only works on the NES version. It doesn't work on VsSMB, SMAS, or SMBDX.
Steve:
So it was a half-truth. Is that an improvement?
Frank:
RIGHT!
Mewtwo:
Not really.

We move to the outer limits now with the mind of KandyHu:

in mario bros. movie toad is a human/goomba, bowser is a T-rex evolved into
a human...... why didnt they follow the cartoon so it is a strait story?????

Dave:
I don't know about you, but a "strait story" would be rather boring. Who wants to hear about how a strait was formed? I know I don't. (lots of boos from behind the camera)
Steve:
Gee Dave, thanks for taking my bad pun! In any event, the real reason....I don't know. They were naïve, maybe?
Frank:
OW!
Mewtwo:
Perhaps just a tad.

And finally from Bob:

[previous portion censored for stupidity]
now a question for mewtwo.....in the buliding on cninabar (left to the gym)
says that mew gave brith to mewtwo (which make mew mew mewtwo mother who
died) but in the pokedex it says that scientist made it whith mew dna?? not
only that how come in the movie mewtwo wants to kill his own mother(mew)?
that is sick! plase answer these, thanx

Dave:
...submit that to Steven, not me. That's for Pokétalk, not the MARIO Mailbag, need I remind you.
The reason the portion above the question has been censored is because of the fact that he stated blatantly he had emus and ROMs... of which I don't tolerate. The e-mail has been submitted to Nintendo (to the correct department, not the general address.)
Steve:
<snipped out>
Frank:
DOUBLE OW!
Mewtwo:
First of all, one has to remember that the game and TV/Movie storylines are not at all connected really. I have been informed by my lawyer to stop typing at this time.

...Yikes. That last one threw even me for a loop.

Now, the topic for August:

"In Nintendo's Space World later this month, Mario Party 3 will be revealed as well as Mario Kart Advance for GBA. I got to wondering, what would you like to see as title sequels and why?"
