Mario Mailbag!

May2000

"Jay, maybe it's time to add the Mario Mailbag to your NC List. Seriously... in this crazed world of Finals, Biology, and other things, the less important stuff will slip by. I'll warn you already I may be late for the July bag, too. Can we say 'Cruise to Bermuda'? Also, I won't be posting any more e-mail addresses simply because I don't want to. Now, let's open the mailbag and refresh ourselves of the topic for this month:"

Topic: "If you could ask one member of the Mario crew a question, who would you ask and what would you ask?"

First one this time around is from Tiger5913:

Topic Question:
Hmm, I'd ask Peach, "Why the hell do you keep letting yourself get kidnapped
by Bowser? Don't you know by now to carry around a weapon at all times, your
Frying Pan, perhaps?"

Peach:
Steve:
Hoo boy...
  Mewtwo:
And they say I cop out to earn my paycheck...

Now from Adia:

Hi. I was just wondering if there's a site where I can find postcards with
Mario characters (like Toad)? I've tried to look but all I've come across
are cheats and things related to the games. Can you please help?

Dave:
The only places I can suggest are the game's individual sites... other than that, you got me.
Steve:
Can't say I know of any.
  Mewtwo:
My picture's on an airplane.

And next up is Jacsmoon1:

I was wondering that I saw a picture of the Mario 64 game soundtrack, and
I want to know where can I get it and how much does it cost, because I really
like the songs of the game I really like the ending theme and I'm been
playing it on my clarinet and my keyboard and some other Mario songs
including the beginning theme in Yoshi's Story. So, please e-mail me back
if you know where can I get the soundtrack. Also, another question, I went
to the Mushroom Kingdom site and they only have Mario songs for guitar, and I
want to know where can I get some Mario sheet music online so I can play
the Super Mario Bros. theme and some other songs without playing sour notes.
Thank You!

Dave:
I'll be honest with you, that SM64 album cover you saw on TMK was from me.
Now, to more important things... I don't know, but I got mine from a Wal-Mart that sold NP subscription packs, and the package was one year to NP plus SM64 Soundtrack. As for where you can buy them, I'd pretty much get the CD from the Super Power Supply catalogs.
Sheet music... I think that will be much more of a challenge. All I can suggest is to write to Nintendo asking for it. I know I'd like it.
Steve:
Actually, Nintendo did put out some stuff a while back (in the NES days).
  Mewtwo:
At least you can play an insturment. Not many were made for three fingers.

From Lisa comes:

Two questions,
1. Are there one or two whistles in Super Mario Bros. 3?
2. If there are two whistles, where is the second one?

Dave:
There are 3 whistles, but you only need 2 to move from world 1 to world 8.
Whistle 1: World 1-3. Clear out every enemy from the floating white block to the end. Once that is done, squat on the white block until you fall behind the bushes. Then run all the way to the goal until you get to Toad's house. Take the first whistle.
Whistle 2: World 1-Fortress. When you reach the door in the first area, don't go in. Instead, stomp the Dry Bones and then run & fly up along the "ceiling"... you will reach a hidden corridor. Continue walking/running until you reach the end. Push up and collect the whistle.
Whistle 3: World 2-Fire Bros. In the area of the map with the castle, there is a rock next to a tree. Play against the Boomerang Bros until you get a hammer. When you're next to the rock, use the hammer to smash the rock. Go into the palm tree and you will see a Fire Bro. Defeat them both for the third whistle.
Use one whistle to get to the warp board, and use another one while on the warp board. This will take you from world 1 to world 8 the fastest.
Steve:
No offense, but I find it hard to believe anyone wouldn't know there are three warp whistles in SMB3.
Mewtwo:
What people don't know is surprising.

And the next letter is from Mike:

Topic Question:
How ya doing? Well, I would ask Bowser why he's always kidnapping the
Princess. Oh, and in Super Mario World, how do you you get to the fortress in
the level before Bowser's Castle? Thanks.

Bowser:
I have nothing better to do. Do you really think I can sit around doing nothing all day? NO! I have to terrorize something, anything! Sometimes I get so bored I terrorize ants. You think that's exciting? That's why I kidnap the Princess just when everything seems peaceful.
Steve:
To get to the Valley Fortress: In Valley of Bowser 2, go to the last leg of the stage. Once you get past the first rising sand bar, backtrack off the top of the screen and go left until you reach an area with a key.
  Mewtwo:
No wonder they call it a secret exit.

From the mind of... no, not Minolta, but Kathy, comes:

I once babysat a boy who had Super Mario Brothers, the orignial. He had me
play once in a while and after he was old enough to look after himself, I
dismissed the game.  Now, dating my soon-to-be-husband we found his old
Nintendo and Super Mario 3.  We have an absolute blast staying home and
playing! I am desperately searching for a place I can buy Super Mario 1 (the
original with Duckhunt) and Super Mario 2 (my favorite version, every girl
wants to be the princess!).  I CANNOT find these used games anywhere. Do you
know of anyone selling them or direct to a location where I might find them?

Dave:
Oh, jeez... original SMB1 & 2... hmmm... You may try to see if there are some copies on eBay.com. You never know what you'll find there. Also, I hope everything works out for you and your husband.
Steve:
Like as pancreas, or a spleen...
  Mewtwo:
Or you could go to Funcoland.
(Steve: Do they sell spleens?)
(Mewtwo: No.)

From the Duplex Duplex Department Department comes mariomario777:

1)IS MARIO & MEWTWO THE BEST
2)WHO SUCKS? MEW OR MEWTWO
3)IS MARIO NUMBER 1
4)WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE.PIKACHU OR JIGGYPUFF
5)WHO MUST DIE?PIKACHU OR JAR JAR BINKS

Dave:
1) Of course
2) I'm not qualified enough to say that, but neither is Mewtwo.
3) Duh
4) Pikachu
5) Without a doubt, Jar Jar.

Is this guy for real?

Steve:
1) "Is?" Conjugate you idiot!
2) Neither of them are really bad, but Mewtwo is better.
3) Actually he's .34563445
4) Pikachu
5) Jar-Jar
  Mewtwo:
1) Yes.
2) Mew, although I wouldn't really use that word.
3) No, Luigi is
4) I don't know.
5) Jar-Jar.

From a mind that knows no bounds, Matthew offers us:

Obviously this page is based primarily on the character of Mario,
although I have a question concerning Luigi. Ever since I got the
original Nintendo system back in the early 90's (I think 1st grade, I'm
16 now and not really playing videogames much), I've wondered...if Luigi
is characterized by being skinny, long-faced and having green clothes,
why is it that in most of the games (Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 3,
Super Mario World, Mario's Missing, etc.) he is fat and looks just like
his brother when both large and small? It's certainly not a good
promotional move for Nintendo. The only games I've ever seen Luigi done
right are the "Mario All Star" remastered SNES versions, both
"Mariokart" games, and "Super Mario Bros. 2". I've also seen the
correct Luigi in "Super Smash Bros." Why is it that in the cartoons (yes, I
remember seeing those on a local family channel, pretty lame but still
fun) and instruction manuals he is done right, and in the games
themselves he's a Mario clone?!

Dave:
I honestly don't know. Maybe the game didn't have enough memory to hold a separate Luigi in the sprites. You also have to take into consideration that Nintendo only had 4 sprite blocks to work with for little Mario & Luigi. That may be why Luigi was basically Mario in a different palette.
Steve:
Plus, that would give him a different "hit" area.
  Mewtwo:
Maybe Nintendo has a personal vendetta against Luigi.

And before we close, "A topic, a topic... my kingdom for a topic!"

"Based on the recent questions about Mario and Luigi on 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' and 'Greed', if a new game show entitled 'Who Wants to Be a Plumber' were to debut, would you be interested enough to play? Why?"

Cya! Ciao! Arrividerci! Sayanora! Hasta lluego!
