Mario Mailbag!

April2000

"Once again, time to open up the Mailbag here on SMBHQ... see what we find..."

A lot of letters... although none about the topic.

Let's just get started with these two, both contributors unknown:

Where can I find Mario Books? In stores not buying them off magazines.

Dave:
Hmmm... Maybe you could check a secondhand book store. None of the major national chains I know of carry it.
Steve:
You know where Waldo is? Look there.
Mewtwo:
Yeah, right next to my autobiography. I really thought there'd be more of a market for it.
Steve:
Well, maybe if you had used a few words with less than eight letters in them...
(Mewtwo: Oh, be quiet.)

Who is Bowser's father?

Dave:
Uhhhh.... uhmmmmmm... good question. I'd put that in the "unsolved mysteries" file.
Steve:
Elian Gonzales?
(Dave: I can just hear Little Havana in an uproar now.)
  Mewtwo:
I have that strange feeling we don't want to know.

Now we hear from Tea122499@aol.com (try typing that without looking at the screen):

THere's no question you cannot answer ? Well I have come to the right place
because I have been searching relentlessly for a way to save my ( or should I
say OUR) game idea. It seems I should throw in the towl but I won't go down
easily (Im not going to do anything illegal though). My question to you (and
I wish you'd take some time to find out) is: Is there ANY way AT ALL I or
anyone else can save this game?

Dave:
Okay, now this question just plain confused me.
Steve:
Only Sergeant Joe Friday can help us now.
  Mewtwo:
Great, just what we need. Another psycho guy.

Let's listen in to "Burlinge" now:

I would like to know where I can sent a character that I created. Than you

Dave:
One word: "Sendittoworldofnintendodotcom"
Steve:
Steve Says: Or send it to Jay.
  Mewtwo:
Or send it to me. I'm bored.

And now from martianfroggy@angelfire.com...

It's me again. In Super Mario RPG, how do you get to Grate Guy Casino? In the
game, it's mentioned quite a lot. Please help.
P.S.- I don't even own a Game Genie or Game Shark for SNES.

Dave:
Fortunately, you're in luck. I'm in a good mood, so I'll help you. In Bean Valley (near Land's End), there is a section with five pipes and Piranha Plants on top of them, and a Shy Away flying around, feeding those plants. If you go to the rearmost pipe (engaging the plant in battle before having to go down, of course), go the the corner to the left of the Chomp Chomp, and jump twice. You will see a floating platform and exit appear. Take the exit, and make sure you have your Bright Card with you! (Look for Knife Guy in Booster Tower and guess where the yellow ball is correctly 12 times)

From mrcurly182@yahoo.com comes:

you know what would be cool if mario beat pikachu up
and got rid of those awful pokemaniacs!

Dave:
There's a game called "Super Smash Bros." for the N64. Go get it.
Steve:
Yeah, please!
  Mewtwo:
Grrrrr, how come Mew gets be in there and not me?

LUCLAS@aol.com has yelled at me this:

CAN YOU MAKE A DEATHMATCH.

Dave:
Okay, number 1, you're shouting. And number 2, I'm not planning on making a deathmatch, for that, contact that Jay Resup or whoever his name is.
BTW, be sure to read Bill & Fred's Quasi-Mediocre Adventure!
Steve:
It's not just mediocre, it's QUAZI-mediocre!
  Mewtwo:
This might also explain why people keep complaining to me about the Psychic Friends Network....

From nljones@home.com comes:

Question about SMB3 for Nintendo, end of World 6
I completed World 6 and after that the Princess left a note asking me to
"go get the whistle hidden in the dark at the end of the 3rd world".
Does this mean there is a 4th whistle? Where do I go to find it?

Also, how come when I have a fireball mario, and I go into a mushroom
house, do my fireballs appear green?

Dave:
To answer your questions: No, there isn't a fourth whistle. There are only 3 whistles. Your memory must be fuzzy. And, strange as it may seem, that's just how it is with fireballs.
Steve:
Actually, the Princess is referring to world 1-3, where the whistle is located behind the end section. The fireball thing is just a palette glitch type of thing (after all, who would need fireballs in Toad's house?).
Mewtwo:
I'm still trying to figure out why my psychic powers are blue while Mew's are pink.
Dave:
To borrow a line from Walter Cronkite...
"And that's the way it is."

Unsuccessfully, thelogue@pacbell.net tries to test my grey matter:

Lets see you answer this then do you know how to get Luigi in Mario 64
Please put this up on the mailbag.

Dave:
I'll tell you how I answer that... HAUL OF SHAME! I already said that he's not there in a previous mailbag.
Steve:
Grrrrr.....
Mewtwo:
Same place as Waldo.
Dave:
How many Waldo references can we make here, people?

Dumbness has claimed da_guy_in_duz_thoyd_row@yahoo.com, but he still made a few intelligent questions:

I've got a few Qs fer ya...
1) What is yer favorite Mario game & why?
2) If you could come up with a new power-up, what would it be?
3) What does Nintendo mean by "Mature Mario" for their new Dolphin system?

Dave:
1) Super Smash Bros.... Tons of replay value!
2) Fire power-up. Instead of throwing fireballs, Mario becomes one.
3) We'll see when it comes out. Nintendo is keeping the Dolphin under very tight wraps. I wonder why it hasn't suffocated yet.
Steve:
1. Wario Land 2
2. Some sort of forcefield power up
3. I dunno
  Mewtwo:
1. What makes you think I play Mario games?
2. Psychic, of course
3. Something short of what Rare did with Conker, I hope.

Maybe "lucky-mama" isn't feeling lucky after all...

Donkey Kong Country 2 for super nes, can you please tell me where all
the big DK coins are? We have found 25 of them............ Please HELP
ME!!!!!!

Dave:
LOL... if I can take the time to buy two guides, you can at least take the time to buy one (or at least read it). I will tell you where one DK coin is... beat Kaptain K. Rool in the Lost World. You can only do that when you have completed all of the levels in the Lost World.
Steve: Under my bed.

Mewtwo: In other words, you don't know.

Steve: Yeah.

Now from Nhdja@aol.com:

Bowser is not the father of the Koopa Kids,I know Bowser is the king, but the
Koopa Kids are his brothers and sister,he's thiar big brother!Do I make
any point here??

Dave:
You do make a point, but it's as clear as mud.
Steve:
Maybe he means the organization, or 1984, or something.
  Mewtwo:
This person has a very dull point.

From a real Videogamehead1@aol.com (got to like those extended names):

Do you have info onthe upcoming Mario game Super Mario Adventure ? I heard
it's gonna be for little kids and the characters will be flat. I hope they
make it for big kids too. And PLEASE don't say that the characters will be flat.
Parappa the Rapper was ugly enough. Cool site!

Dave:
Near as I can tell, it's going to be 2-D characters in a 3-D world (the nice way of saying flat characters). As for the 'kiddiness' of it... I don't know. It will depend very much on gameplay.
Steve:
'Fraid so.
  Mewtwo:
Most people think Pokémon is a kiddie RPG too.

If anyone would like to contribute to the topic, please do!

TOPIC FOR MAY:
If you could ask one member of the Mario crew one question, who would you ask, and what would you ask?
