Mario Mailbag!

March2000

Note: If I do not reply quickly to you, it's probably because I was not notified from the mail server. This occasionally happens, and I won’t be held responsible.

First one this month is from lflf99@aol.com:

Listen, it's Fernando again. Do you know if it's possible to send e-mail to
the Mario Bros. & their friends themselves? I've always wanted to send
e-mail to them. What I mean is, is it possible to send e-mail to any
Nintendo characters? Please help ASAP. Thank you.

Dave:
Unfortunately, there is no system set up for that on Nintendo.com now and there probably won't be. If there were, I'd probably be setting up an interview with Luigi as we speak.
Steve:
I'd like to know how many "Dear Pikachu" letters Nintendo gets per day.

Before we go on, I'd like to introduce one of Steve's pokemon here. He's one of the most powerful there is and the first success cloning a Pokemon and whose number is certainly not his rank, Mewtwo.

Next is from jayman@go2.pl:

'ey! I want to ask you how can I get (legally, of course) Super Mario Bros. games for my PC?
And please tell me how can I get "The Super Mario Bros. Anthem" (you know,
the one track that appears in the first level (Grass Land) of pegasus
version of Mario? This is one of the best tracks that I've seen in my whole life!!!

Dave:
The only (licensed) Mario games I have seen for the PC is Mario Teaches Typing and Mario's FUNdamentals. As for the track, I have no clue what you're talking about.
Steve:
I remember an old Macintosh Game called My Dude that had the first world of SMB, no fireballs, and ran way too fast on my computer. As for the music, sorry, I don't know.
  Mewtwo:
What? Isn't it enough to be able to play these games on TV? Heck, why do you play their games at all? They can't even float in the air without a stupid leaf, feather, cap, carrot, or some other stupid device! By the way, do you have any idea how hard it is to type when each of your hands only has three fingers?

This next one is from Ghstface1010@aol.com:

in super mario deluxe for gameboy color in world 4-4 i cant pass it no matter how fast i try to go or what strategy i try the time always runs out

(ed.: I found out later this was for the Original 1985 version.)

Dave:
Number one, when you get to the first fork (split), take the top and don't drop (hence why I always hold the B button). When you come to the staircase over the lava (to the two-tiered section), take the first gap down (not into the lava, obviously), go back left and take the hole down to ground level, and get that axe!

(Also, I am a firm believer of the key known as "Shift".)

Steve:
Ah yes, the always tricky maze levels. Hey, Mewtwo! Why don't you just use your psychic powers to type?
  Mewtwo:
I would, but it seems like every time I try to, something breaks. On the other hand (pun intended), this mouse works really well, and I really like the blueberry color.

Steve:
What? You got an iMac?! No fair!

Now we hear from martianfroggy@angelfire.com:

I have a slight problem with my SNES Mario All-Stars game: In "SMB3", pressing
select causes me to change into a different type of Mario. I can even become
invincible by morphing into the Tanooki statue and pressing "select". Also,
the time never ends. Is this normal?

Dave:
You better believe it's not! Now, I think there are a couple of situations off the top of my head that could cause this:
1. You modified your Game Genie and used SMAS afterwards in the GG, which could result in one code completely modifying the game completely. (most likely)
2. Nintendo had a defective cartridge and didn't pick up on that one. (least likely)
3. This is a prank mailing. (somewhat likely)
There are many different ways this could have happened. I only listed three.
Steve:
You call that a "problem?" I'd love that!
  Mewtwo:
I'll bet half the people who read this try it out on their game.

Dave:
Oh, you betcha! Me included!

And finally from Yoshi1001@aol.com:

1. For some reason, even though my N64 is hooked up right, my SSB sound is
going through the wrong channel, what gives?

2. Have you noticed all the symbolism in SMB3? For example:
  a. There are many occurrences of the number 3:
-As a coin pattern in world 1-1.
-As a watery roman numeral on the map of world two.
-There are three warp whistles, one in 1-3, another held by the third hammer bros. in world 2.
    -There are three special suits.
-There three items that let you fly.
-There are three hand trap stages in world 8.
-There are three kubiro's shoes, all in world 5-3.
    -And probably even more.
  b. Giant land is in the shape of a turtle.
  c. World 3 has two islands that form a mushroom shape.

What's up with that?

Dave:
1. I don't know what to tell you.
2. Freaky. I didn't realize all that symbolism in there. I knew about the first two threes, but didn't look carefully enough to see the rest of those.

Hey wait.. aren't you... and... O_o <?!>

Steve:
Gee, I wonder if I know this person...
  Mewtwo:
Knowing you, probably not.

Happy April Fools Day, everyone!
