Super Mario Bros. Guide By Mark Kelly (C) 1998 Welcome to the Super Mario Bros. Guide. Some of you may be thinking, "Why do we need a guide for Super Mario Bros." Well the answer is, you don't. However there might be some 4 year old out there crying to his mummy or daddy or alternatively, a newsgroup, "How od Ikill tHe Big Koop on teh Brige?" These people need help, and here is where to find it. No it isn't a typing tutor program, it's Mario... ==Super Mario Bros. for Dummies== Welcome one and all. Here is where your foibles are answered. Actually, I don't answer anyones foibles but here is how to play this game and get good at it. *Basic Moves* Wanna run fast? Hold down B while walking and your Mario Brother will break into a sprint. Like this he can run over very small gaps without falling down. Also, if you jump while running you will jump much higher. If you hold the A button down for longer then Mario will jump higher. Bad guys on top of bricks can be bashed from below if they are standing on blocks. Don't bump into any or you will die. Kick a Koopa Shell and it will fly off in the direction you kicked it. It will knock out any enemies as long as they are on screen. Each time you hit an enemy you get points. If a shell hits two enemies then the points will double for the second one. This goes on until finally you end up like this... 100-200-400-800-1000-2000-4000-8000-1-UP *Basic Other Stuff* Pick up a green mushroom for an extra life. You can also collect 100 coins for an extra life. Killing many enemies in quick succession also bags you a 1-UP. (Depends how many points each one is worth) In every castle and any level in world 8, try not to die because you will always return to the beginning of the level. In any other level though, you will start about halfway through the level (supposing you get that far that is.) *End of Level Mayhem* At the end of each level you must ascend a staircase and jump onto a flagpole (except on castles of course.) There is a way to get big points here. If you do a running leap off the top of the staircase you will be able to get 5000 points at the top of the pole. Also, if you hit the flagpole when the last digit of the timer is on a 1, 3 or 6 then you will get that number of fireworks. Each firework is worth 500 points. To get 6 fireworks every time, do a running jump from the top of the staircase when the last digit of the timer is 9. The time it takes to run and jump the gap means you will get 3000 points added on to the 5000 points at the top of the flagpole. *Differences on All-Stars* Yes it's true, Mario All-Stars has changed this game slightly. Now the characters jump differently (just a tad.) Also, Player two can pause now, so you can't annoy your mates halfway through a level over a big jump by pausing it on your controller. Finally, Player 1 plays a level then player 2 plays a level. In the original it went; player 1 plays a level, and another, and another until he dies. Then player two does the same. ==Items and Enemies== There are so many items and enemies in Mario's World, where did they all spawn from. Well here is your answer. Everyone's favorites from the Goomba, to the Super Star to the evil King Koopa himself, all came from this game originally. Of course there have been many additions to the Koopa Clan and the Mario Item lists (just see the Enemy and Items lists on the SMBHQ main!) We now go on a trip into darkest Mushland to view these creatures in their natural habitat. *Mushroom* Grab one of these tasty orange mushrooms to turn into Super Mario. As Super Mario you are much bigger (making reaching high blocks easier) and you don't die if you get hit by an enemy, merely shrink down to regular Mario. *Fire Flower* Pick a glowing flower and it will turn you into Fiery Mario. As Fiery mario you can kill enemies with fire-balls. Only two fire-balls can be on screen at once. *Starman* Collect one of these to become Invincible Mario. As Invincible Mario you can barge through enemies without them hurting you. However, fall down a hole and you will still die. *Coins* Collect 100 of these shining discs and you will recieve 1 extra life. *1-UP Mushroom* Collect a green Mushroom and the number of lives you have increases by 1. *Goomba* A nasty mushroom with big eyebrows. The goomba walks in one straight line and is very stupid. Jump on it to kill it. *Koopa Troopa* A Koopa is a nasty turtle (not a duck!!!) that p aces around levels. The red ones never walk off an edge but the green ones do. If you jump on one then it turns into a shell. Kick the shell and it will mow down anything in it's way. *Para-Troopa* Hop on the back of this winged Troopa to make it's wings fall off. Green Para- Troopas hop up and down while red ones float in the air. *Podoboo* A ball of flame that leaps out of Koopa's lava rivers. It cannot be killed. *Buzzy Beetle* A fire resistant enemy. It is exactly like a green Koopa Troopa except you can't blast it with a fire flower. *Lakitu* The King of the clouds is a nasty piece of work. he will chase Mario from his cloud in the sky dropping Spiny eggs. He is quite difficult to kill from the ground, but it is possible to kill him once you are high enough. *Spiny* The small spiked beetle that hatches out of Spiny Eggs is called a Spiny. It is just like a Koopa Troopa except you can't jump on it's back. You can blast it with fire balls though. *Bullet Bill* Living rockets that are fired from a cannon. They travel across the screen and can be killed by almost every attack. Just don't get hit by them. *Cheep-Cheep* Flying Fish! They usually swim peacefully in the water, easily killed by fire balls. Sometimes they leap out of the water and attack while you are standing on narrow platforms. They are not so easy to beat then, and so are best to just be avoided. *Bloober* A swimming octopus. If it gets too close for comfort then sink to the bottom of the screen and crouch, it is always repelled from hitting you then. You can also shoot them. *Fire Arm* A block with a rotating line of fire. They come in many sizes and cannot be defeated, so avoid them. *Hammer Bros.* Two Koopas with a sack full of hammers is not the best idea. They will throw them around mercilessly, so fight back with fire power or bash them from their blocks. If neither is possible then just run under them, as they will run at you after 100 seconds on the timer has passed. *King Koopa* There are many fake King Koopas and they pretty much do the same thing, breath fire. Some of them also throw hammers, which is dangerous. For points you need to defeat them with fire balls, but if that isn't an option, then run underneath it and grab the axe. The drawbridge will fall and Koopa will plummet into the lava. The last Koopa has many attacks. Not only does he breathe fire, but also throws more hammers than ever before AND breathes invisible flames. Quickly run under him and hit the axe or shoot him with fire balls. ==The Game Tips== Fed up of Koopa Troops giving you a hard time? Then read this handy guide that will sort you out. 1-1 Stand 6 blocks away from the fourth pipe on this level and you can get a hidden 1-UP. 1-2 Stan d on the big blue floating block about halfway through this level and smash the ceiling block to the right of it to make a hole. Now smash the block to the left of the hole and a 1-UP will appear and drop down the hole you made. The first pipe with a piranha plant in it holds a bonus room. Use the elevators at the end of the level to scroll off the top of the screen and head right. Now you will find a place called Warp Zone that will take you to worlds 2, 3 or 4. (Note: Warping to some places makes extra hidden 1-UPs appear!) 1-4 After crossing the lava you will reach a tunnel of fire arms. Instead of stopping all the time, just sprint through them and you will emerge without a scratch. The Bowser is really a Goomba!! 2-1 If you have warped here then the first pit with Koopa Troops in holds the much needed 1-UP. Later on, in a high block, there is a beanstalk that reaches for a coin loaded sky bonus. 2-3 Only one thing can be said for this level... RUN!!! And don't stop until you reach the narrow platforms (take your time over these.) 2-4 The tunnel of fire arms can be avoided again by running. The Bowser is really a Koopa Troopa!! 3-1 When you reach two very short, high up platforms shaped like a =, use the spring board to leap over them and then jump into them from the right. If you try to use the springboard then you are more likely to fall to your death. Up there is a beanstalk to a lovely sky bonus. Also, keep bouncing off the Koopa on the final staircase to bag yourself many 1-UPs. Cool huh. 3-2 After the second teeny tiny pit there should be a Koopa about to fall down it. Stop him and kick him to the right. Follow him so the shell stays on screen and, taking into account all the enemies it hits you should get a 1-UP. 3-4 The Bowser is really a Buzzy Beetle!! 4-1 Somewhere among the many block formations on this level, there is a 1-UP, but only if you warped to this level. 4-2 When you have bypassed the goomba tunnel and the elevator you should see a small brick platform just a bit lower than the ceiling. Stand under the third one and jump to make a coin block appear, and then do the same with the second one. Jump up and hit the first block to make a vine appear. This will take you to a warp leading to worlds 6,7 and 8! That's not all. At the end of this level stand on the big pipe and smash your way into the ceiling and run right over the exit to find another Warp Zone to world 5! 4-4 You need to take two routes to get out of this maze. Top route first, then hop down and edge left so you can take the bottom route. The Bowser is really a Spiny!! 5-2 Bypass the first hammer brother and go don't go down the pipe to find a water land bonus. It is tricky and not worth it. Besides, there is a sky bonus instead not long after. 5-3 This level look familiar? Of course it does. It's world 1-3 with lots of Bullet Bills and shorter moving platforms. It is still as easy and dull as the original. 5-4 Another repeated level. This one is just world 2-4 with more fire arms and shorter moving platforms. The Bowser is really a Lakitu!! 6-2 This level is a bonus goers dream world. Nearly every pipe holds a bonus room. There are also a fair share of vine worlds on this level (1) and also, lots of piranha plants. 6-3 I have dubbed this level, 'Scary Bullet Bill Level'. They will try to knock you off the narrow and difficult to use platforms. 6-4 Yes, another repeated level. 1-4 this time with yet more fire arms to deal with. Don't try and run through the first tunnel anymore. The Bowser is really a Bloober!! 7-1 Time to cry, Bullet Bills and Hammer Bros. are in this level by the bucket load. 7-2 Same as 2-2 except more Bloobers and more Cheep-Cheeps. 7-3 Same as 2-3 except this one has Koopa Troopas to slow you down. 7-4 Another maze level here. And the combination goes... Bottom route, Middle route, Top route, Top route, Middle route, Top route. The Bowser is really a Hammer Brother!! 8-1 Time is of the essence here. If you don't move fast then you can run out of time quickly. There is a big hole in this level. You must do a running jump off the little stumpy bit of ground in the middle. 8-2 Stand on the spring board and bounce up to make a 1-UP appear. Now head right, keeping it on screen and collect it at the end. To cross the big gap you must run off the pipe. 8-3 This level is a funky castle. Try and get a fire flower, they really help against Hammer Bros. 8-4 The last castle!!! Cross the lava pit by leaping from the bottom step, walk right, cross lava pit and go down the pipe directly after. Cross the next lava pit, kill the para-troopas and find the hidden coin block. Use it to go down the floating pipe. Avoid cheep-cheeps, cross the lava and go down the pipe directly after to find a water castle. Avoid the fire arms and go through the pipe. Kill the Hammer Brother and cross the lava pit to find Bowser. He is tough this time!!! And it can be said that Bowser is really Bowser this time!!
